Email I got today...

Quote
No access fees, no subscription...Dark and Light Game Access becomes free*!

Dark and Light, new access mode revealed: Discovery Mode
Come back to Ganareth and invite your friends to join you in this adventure!

It’s all very simple: All you need to start playing is a valid Dark and Light Forum account.

It’s free: As soon as your forum account is activated, you can start playing immediately for free.

No time limit: This access is active for the whole lifetime of Dark and Light.

What’s the trick? No trick, just the goal to give most players the chance to start an unlimited adventure in the world of Ganareth.
From the 10th level, the gamer continues the adventure with no limit but he cannot collect more XP points (Fighting, Social, and Craft).
If he decides to keep progressing though Ganareth, he will have to buy a Dark and Light activation key and will have to choose to be either a Freedom or a Master player.

Somebody find the D&L Pile of Feces picture. I can't find it.

This thread needs it badly.

I belive it's called a trial, not a free game, when you're limited to level 10  rolleyes

A better price for settling any doubts that the game is a hacked together product of amateurs, I could not ask for.

...Or maybe Corpnews dislikes being up at all right now.  Getting, "you do not have permission to access" messages from all corpnews pages right now.

I'm so vain, I probably think that error message is about me.

They've been desperate for a long time since the game is dogshit, but a level limited trial doesn't really mean anything special. Now if they let you play for free with ads like AO, that would be telling.

I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the shitty client d/l and patch process we had to go through when SoG launched. I got my first exposure to torrents, and wasn't impressed. If they have fixed that and made a decent "launchpad" that takes care of all relevant downloads and patches, then I'll try it out. It's free, after all. Maybe.

Am I the only one getting "you don't have permission to access \" errors when I try to go to corpnews?

It'd be funny if that was how I discovered I was preemptively Ip banned considering i'm on a dynamic IP.

Ah, so I'm not the only one for whom this link is dead?

It hink I've seen the screenshot he's referring to from a loong time back.  Basically, it's a crappy screenshot of somebody finding a pile of rocks labeled a pile of execrement or somesuch.

If you can pull it up, do us a favor and host it somewhere that doesn't seem to have screwed up DNS/Hosting/Priorities.

Okay.

I think the graphic is amazing - a pile of rocks, with various piles of feces sitting on them, scattered about.

Hi.  I know nothing about D&L.  Why is that little man digging through a pile of poop??

My impressions from years ago:  it is/was a game based on a graphics engine; they started with this engine that allowed them to apply level-of-detail to stuff miles away (f.ex. a mountain would look like a mountain does from a distance, rather than an oversized cone-shaped rock like in WoW) and then you could also travel there, with the LOD system gradually showing you local details (trees, grass, etc).  That was it, and they tried to attach a team PvP game onto that engine, but, of course everything about their lore, races, and classes was chaotic and mumbo-jumbo with no actual order or sense, and I wasn't really interested in PvP at the time, so I stopped being interested.

Just found this in a thread on MMORPG.com, according to a member of the DnL staff, if you want to cancel your account you'll need to hand over $10:

Quote from this thread on the DnL forums:
Quote
there is no way to completely cancel/erase your account using the dark and light website, you can switch to freedom package but that will cost 9.99$, but after that there is no monthly cost.
you do switch to freedom package here:
http://www.darkandlight.net/selfservice.php3
There are other ways to "cancel" your account but those ways are not official and they cant be found on this website.

Wow. Just... wow.

Cheers to DnL.

With my available play-time sorely limited at the moment, DnL isn't at the top of my list of games I'm keeping active.

It's been a lot of fun over the past year, and I've certainly had my money's worth of entertainment from my pioneer pack, and the double charged monthly sub I paid not so long ago.

There is no cancellation button, so I've put my request in via the support form, and also requested cancellation of my click & buy account, just to be on the safe side.

Hope you all have a great time in Ganareth, and I'll likely return at some point once my free-time becomes free enough to devote to more than one game.

Kroy.

Every month they send me a notice saying I owe them money.

I canceled literally hours after downloading the client, using the Click & Buy system.

Now, I bought the client many months ago. You would think that if I were being billed consistently since the client came out, I'd be charged about 10 bucks a month, so it came out in what, August?

But this bill is only for like, 25 bucks. Which indicates to me that my account was canceled, and then REACTIVATED WITHOUT MY CONSENT.

They haven't responded to any of my support request e-mails.

I wonder if they honestly think this kind of thing will make them more money in the long run. Or have they completely given up at this point and have given in to the fact that all that's left is to make a couple thousand extra by cheesing people and essentially stealing money?

I don't know exactly how much money went into Dark & Light, but it might seem to me that a better course of action would be to quietly, even if slowly, improve the game over the next year, two years, even three years.. then give a comeback a try. Ala Anarchy Online, in a way. As opposed to, you know, scarring the name of your game and company for eternity.

At least they finally responded:

Dear Client,

We are sorry for the inconvenience that might have been caused by this email and

This is due to an error caused by one robot of our payment processor which has generated
a totally unfounded mail. We have of course cancelled these bills.

As requested, we have cancelled your account.

I don't think you get a comeback in mmorpg, once you release and flop there is no coming back from that.

That was received wisdom, certainly, but Eve broke that rule with a long and slow but very steady recovery.  AO is a more arguable proposition, I admit, but I've heard it suggested.

It could be argued that Eve's success was not a recovery but rather a plan to start out small and build up.
