It's drizzling lightly here in SF. If it snows here at all this winter, I will be pleasantly surprised.
I love snow, until I have to shovel it or drive in it.

Kinda weird that Denver got hammered and SLC was completely missed. That doesn't happen very often. |

But we're getting some tonight/tomorrow.  w00t!  It's been beautiful all week up here in Snowbird and what locals call marginal conditions (4-6 feet packed powder) is like heaven for our So Cal ski legs. |

Bah, that's just about any snowfall here in Northern Ohio. What's even worse is when they plow down the street and pile it up against your car.

Guess it just ramped itself up as it got over the rockies. Have fun while in town. |

Bullshit.  I live in Michigan (Y'know, your northern neighbor ) and having lived in Colorado I can tell you that we don't get nearly the amount of snow they do.  Of course, our snow sticks around, whereas it tends to melt fairly quickly there.  The Rockies do fucked up things to weather, particularly the winds.  You haven't felt wind 'til a strong Chinook kicks up. |

It hasn't snowed at or around sea level in the Bay Area since like 1977 (and we still had to go to school dangit!). It will snow up on the various higher hills though. |

Lake-Effect Snow climatology gives Northeast Ohio, that little nub on Pennsylvania, and upper New York way, way more snow than anyplace in Michigan. Michigan winters are nothing. The one part of Michigan that even gets what I'd deign to call snow - the upper peninsula, gets less than half the average snowfall of Northeast Ohio. And frankly, Denver winters are pretty mild too. Aside from all that, I can see how much snow is on the ground there in those pictures. Oh no, the fluffy, powdery snow is up to the bottom of the car! We've already had snow like that here this year, and it's been above 50 all but one week. The week we got like 14" of snow. Normal winters we get at least two or three snowstorms like that one. |

If Ohio is like that then I don't want to ever live there. I'll take my sunny but cold Colorado winters, with the occasional snow and even more occasional snow storm.
But, you have to admit, 2 feet of snow in 12 hours is pretty good. :)

Yah, hard to tell from the pictures. According to 9 News' website we got 28 inches here in Wheat Ridge (where the pictures were taken). My house in Westminster got slammed with 34 inches. Crazy. Edit: of course, we normally don't get more than 1-2 feet of snow *total* down here in Denver (foothills gets a bit more) for a winter. Apparently a snow storm like this happens twice a decade or so. |

We average 100-110" of snow over a winter. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Regardless, 34" is way too much snow at once. |

I do miss the Cleveland winters sometimes.  Real snowfall instead of this bullshit rain all the time.  /sigh.   If Ohio is like that then I don't want to ever live there.
It's just the lake-effect areas that a.bob pointed out that get like that.  An average snowfall was about 2"-3"  IIRC, and it'd snow like that once every week or two.  The 'bad storms' were the 2' or more ones, and you'd have to drive carefully (Y'know.. like 45 on the highway)  if they predicted a foot.  Oh fond memories. |

Keep in mind that while Ohio gets a lot of snow, they don't have to drive on mountain passes.  I live in the front range of the Rockies and this snowfall closed every road in a 150 mile radius including I80, I70, and I25.  Lots of snow + 25mph winds + mountain passes = bad. |

We get lake effect from Ontario here, but nothing like when I lived on the tughill plateau. That was EXTREME winter. Of course, I didn't have a snowmobile, a snowblower or 4WD, so it kinda sucked. But I would definitely live there if I had those three things, I love snow. |

That was my point in the Festivus thread. We here in Denver simply aren't prepared to deal with 30 inches of snow in a 24 hour period, in contradiction to popular mythology. We have wimpy winters in comparison with the Great Lakes Region. |

Having grown up in Mpls, I agree completely.  The town I live in now (about 120 miles from Denver) only plows like 3 streets and lets the sun melt the rest.  In Minnesota, they had a much better system for handling the snow and even during the worst storms, we often could be back and functioning in 12h.    |

I'll say that from what I have seen, Vermont is Excellent in their ability to deal with sudden dumpings of snow.
But anyway....yeah, people in NJ get positively retarded when there is snow around. They just don't get that you need to drive more slowly, because you can hardly stop for shit.

Also, be kind if you see a Mustang in front of you going somewhat slowly - they're not purposely driving slowly like an idiot or something - they're just trying to keep their damn traction. It's beyond easy to spin the tires in even a light rain, so you can imagine what snow and slush do to those kinds of cars....

You want fun / scary? Try driving an RX-8 in the snow. Not only are they rear wheel drive, but they weigh 12 pounds. It is an exercise in a perpetually controlled fishtail. |

RX-8s have better weight balance, almost 50/50 F/R.
Yeah, it must still suck though.  :-D

Definitely. And you notice the first time you take a sharp corner at a significantly higher speed than you think you should. CO 6 is a perfect place to do that.  :-D |

We haven't had any real lasting snow up here in Canadia (Toronto at least). Which is a shame. I really wanted the pond near my house to freeze over before I moved. This makes me sad :( |
