Standard disclaimer:  If this has been mentioned somewhere else on the boards, sorry.  I admit I don't read every board section everyday.

So.  Here we have Rupture, the pet project of Richard Fanning, one of the Napster dudes.  The product site itself is ominously bland, however there are a few tidbits to be found in this Vault thread.

Since we are a "guild" or organization or...something I suppose we could check it out if anyone actually cares about doing so.

We're definately not a guild. Is anyone on F13 who actually plays WoW, even in the same guild? Or on the same server?

Magelo for WoW....um, ok. Sounds like more e-peen flaunting tools.

And what does this have to do with EVE?

(sorry - SB just doesn't have the ooomph anymore.)

I meant guild in the sense that we have a WoW playing segment of our e-community here.  I'm aware that more than 2 of us can't agree what server they like playing on.  I myself am not interested in this program.  Just contributing something I ran across.

MySpace+World of Warcraft! Another winning combination! If 1% of the WoW population gave them a quarter for this Rupture thingie, that's still quite a bit of money.

I swear I'm going to make donut cars, calculator sharks, and blue jean houses and sell them on eBay. No, better yet, I'll just wait five years for all these wackos to die a horrible Darwinian eDeath so there's only a couple networking systems out there which are run by McDonalds and Ted Turner. AT LEAST THAT WOULD MAKE SENSE!

Yeah, I want one of those calculator sharks. It'd have to be a land shark, though.

Hm.. cynicism about WoW multiplied by cynicism about MySpace...

Holy shit, F13 is in terrible danger of reaching a supercritical sardonic mass and imploding upon itself into a black hole of loathing from which no opinion can escape!

Clearly what the world really needs is a MySpace for Habbo Hotel.

If you can't come up with a good idea, combine two existing ones!

Man, the last thing I'd want in WoW is for random people to be able to look up my RL self. The mere thought curls my hair.

Cydoor.

You're thinking I'm shitting you, right? Go look. It's essentially Myspace + Habbo Hotel. I think.

Theres a few really wierd misguided things about this.

1. This guy actually got significant funding (based on his SV location and name likely)
2. I've spoken to a wow modd'er, it is either against the TOS to write data directly from WOW to a 3rd party app, (caching issues and IP issues) or not feasable. (unless its cleared with legal)

Now Napster screwed with the Music industry and the RIAA, but they do not want the 900lb gorilla that is Vivendi up in thier grill....they play serious hardball with thier IP.

Other curious things:

Theres already guildportal and guild hosting firmly in place
Most hardcore WOW gamers are using VOIP

Im not seeing the appeal for purely SN reasons, besides the new patch pretty much negated the need for this.....LFG interface  accomplishes the same functions.

besides facesofwarcraft and wowsocial already exist

Wierd stuff to get funding for but then hey....wtf those VC's will fund anything at the moment...

I can name two reasons why he got funding:

"I'm that Napster guy!"

"WOW is so huge, we only need 1/100 WOW players to user our service to become rich!"

there are no real time hooks from WoW for mods, yes -- it is all at load time.  It's not against the TOS to write data directly from WOW to a 3rd party app it's just not possible to do so in real time.  Cosmos, CTRaid, MobInfo everyone with a log scraper or just a patcher does it already.  All they are doing is making UI changes to save certain kinds of data, taking that saved info after a WoW session, then sending it somewhere to save it.  What is illegal are packet sniffers, apps that sit between the game and its host and filter traffic to the benefit of the player.

The exe I wrote with friends (needs the 20000 TOC version update only) works easily to read/write lua sharred variables.  Hard part is host side where we do everything.  Fanning and friends will only be able to do this.  Which means anyone else can do it also.

Necroposting.

This site was in a private beta before, and was hidden. Now you can look at it.

However, it's now working on a gmail friend-invites-a-friend type system, and I'm actually very, very impressed with this.

It runs a data collecting UI mod that interfaces with an IM client-type thing. It basically gathers data on EVERYthing - your average pvp stats, your items, your talent build, your guild, your factions - and puts it all available on a page, and can do stat tracking by server and worldwide.

Right now, it's only working for World of Warcraft, but if this gets applied to other MMOs, I can see this being huge.

Here's a link to my WoW character's page for info on how it looks:

I could see these pages turning into a resume for guild recruiting.

While it doesn't look pretty it does track damn near everything you could want, could be cool.

A nation consists of its laws. A nation does not consist of its situation at a given time. If an individual's morals are situational, then that individual is without morals. If a nation's laws are situational, that nation has no laws, and soon isn't a nation.

Now that Bizzard is beta-ing 'The Armory', I wonder if this is the beginning of the eventual end for Rupture.  Even if Rupture is something that you may never have to pay for (although I am sure that there would be ample revenue from advertisements) we have seen time and time again Blizzard's heavy handed reaction when their IP is messed with.

If Blizzard's eventual  intention is to profit from the Armory, I'm sure Rupture would be viewed by them as being direct competition and in violation of their TOS, EULA, or whatever they use to fight this kind of thing.

It's not like Rupture's creator ever profited off the work of others in the past, or anything like that
