I purchased this about 4 days after release, but just now got around to playing it. I was trying it here and there on "Normal" mode and was getting absolutely nowhere. I finally put it on "Easy" and can actually play the game, if not barely.
While I usually do have a hard time with real time strategy games like this, the pacing isn't all that bad. I haven't played around with it but I think you can pause or slow it down in the settings. I'll have to play around with it more.
I'm not that great at these games, but like to fool myself into playing them because I like the idea of them. I'm enjoying it now on Easy mode, but still come out of some fights with barely any of my armies alive and cash is a constant problem in between fights.
Oh, it is a resource hog for some reason. I get crashes once in awhile, but got about 4 hours of constant play yesterday with no problems. There are just a lot of freezes during play that are annoying, but the program seems to shake itself out of them. The loading times inbetween fights is FOREVER, but I found the breaks refreshing when doing a marathon run. They make it hard to just pick up and play when you have 30 minutes because half of that time will be watching the "Loading..." screen.
Anyone else playing this?

I was excited about it when I thought it was "Warhammer: Total War", but since I've found out that it's linear and there really isn't much to it beyond the tactical set-match fights the interest has died. Medieval 2 is scratching my itch right now.

Linear, as well as limited.
Imperial vs Undead. How interesting.
[edit]
Oops! I called them undead. Didn't mean that.
Undead would be cool actually...

There is undead, but not as a playable race. One mission has your hero's go into a grave to kill a vampire. Lots of undead there.
The game is fine if not near impossible for my skillset. I finished the good side. When my "WoW expansion" itch goes away, I'll try out the Chaos side.
The one thing I did figure out is that they want you to basically burn almost all of your troops on each fight. When you are throwing yourself at the wall of a huge fortress with hordes of chaos inside shooting balls of flame at you, you really aren't going to come away from it very well. I had to end up using my elf hero to solo through the gate and capture the castle. The remaining 5 troops I had ran around outside trying to avoid the balls of fire.

JUST CODE THE TURN BASED TABLE TOP GAME ALREADY. YOU KNOW, THE ONE YOU ALREADY DEVELOPED THE RULES FOR.
For fucks sake, you'd think they'd figure it out by now.

But people would start playing the comp game because its easier and faster. And detract from tabletop sales... pretty sure they'll never code the tabletop.

Gulp had it right. If they had made it more like Total War, it'd probably be a hit. Keep the same battle system, but set up a TBS map with Imperial, Briton, High Elves, Dark Elves, Chaos, Dwarves, Orc, Skaven, Tomb Kings. That'd be the shit.

Which is basically what Relic did with Dark Crusade, though the TBS map portion isn't as interesting as the TW:R stuff (you only have one army to move, fewer decisions to make, blah blah blah).

The same way they've figured out that all we really want is an updated Autoduel, or X-Com with a new coat of paint?

I was really hoping there would be some turn-based element to it since I'm more interested in the strategy portion of it, but I was let down. It is *ok* as it is, but nothing spectacular.
When I get around to doing it over again, I think I'll work on using my heroes more often. I think they designed it so you have to put them out on their own to take down armies. Your other armies are there as backup and added ranged damage.
The heroes turn out to be pretty damned tough, as in, one decently specced hero can take down 2-3 armies and come away with half life. That's without an army of their own.
That still smells funny to me, thus my reluctance to put them out there so quickly to be overwhelmed.
Does the tabletop game give heroes this big of an advantage?

It used to, but I think they toned that down with the last release or 2. I once lost a game because of one character, Snitch the Skaven rat bastard assassin master. He come out of hiding first turn, charged through a squad of 10 gunners, caused them to flee (those he didn't kill), pursued and killed the whole unit while the unit of spearmen directly behind them saw the whole thing. This caused the spearmen to shit their pants and flee off the board. That was turn 1. The only thing that came close to touching him was the steam tank (Empire), which did a couple of wounds damage. He then proceeded to fire off his Gauntlets of Power which allowed him to actually damage the tank, killing it too. There wasn't much fight left in the old Empire after that.
So yeah, heroes could take down whole armies in the right circumstances with the right wargear.

They were toned down last edition, but it looks like they might be ratcheting them back up for 7th edition from the look of the Orc characters. Especially nasty is Grimgor Ironhide. I'd imagine they want to sell more character miniatures at $15.00 a pop.

I am. I almost bought it today, but remembered you bitching in IRC. I did get WC3, though. If it is not good I will blame Bhodi. edit. Spelling.

No Nerf, but I put a link to this very thread and I said that you all can guarantee for my purity. I even mentioned your case, and see if they can take a look at your lawn from a Michigan perspective.

Rather, get one of the Total War games. They are actually fun and stuff.

I installed The Dawn of War 40k new one : the one with the necrons and tau.
It's all right.
I love the fact that you don't need the previous games, even tho I have them...
I also liked the Terminator Nerf. Whoever thought that having multiple Terminators was a good idea....

Yeah it's great as long as you aren't playing MP, then it gets weird.

You need the other CD keys if you want to play the other races in MP. E.g. if you just have DC you can only play Tau and Necron in MP. If you also have the original then you can play SM, Ork, Elves I mean Eldar, and Chaos SM. And finally WA gives you access to IG.

That's totally bizarre. It sort of makes sense given that DC is priced as an expansion rather than as a full game, but yeah like I said it's weird.

I believe so but I haven't tried it since my copy of Dawn of War is sitting on my old computer so I've just been playing Dark Crusade in single player campaign mode. Actually now that I think about it I'm not sure it needs the key-- it might want the original game disc(s). I remember reading something about all this in the DC Readme file so you can check it out for the details (I'm going to sleep RSN, heh).
