Yah, I'm sure the multi-million dollar severance package was hard to take.

This can only be good for the games division.

I guess that's what happens when you screw up the PS3 launch...
Among other things. News going around last week was that Kutaragi ignored plees from publishers who wanted to setup exclusive arrangements with Sony thereby giving Microsoft a chance to make deals with them: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6162084.html

From what I can tell he wasn't fired. They just took away his day to day control and made him something else. Unless they give severance packages for stuff like that.

Outright firing him would've been serious trouble for their stock, so he sort of gets a 'working retirement'. He's being essentially made a figurehead until they can take him behind the barn without anyone noticing.

Executives of large corporations are hardly ever fired. They are just shuffled out of the line of power. This can include making them consultants and paying them to do nothing from their company-paid home office.

The best part of SWG was the easy account cancellation process.

How do you get a job like that? "Here, take this money, just never ever actually show up in our office, or communicate with anyone we employ ever again!" Dream Job. -- Alkiera

According to the Wikipedia, his "demotion" has had him promoted to the head of the SCEI, Sony's main computer entertainment division. That's probably reasonably appropriate seeing how he apparently was the one who pushed Sony in the direction of making a little device known as the Playstation in the first place.
As for how he managed to land himself access to the magical money teat, it apparently had something to do with him being an A++ student (which probably involved permanent scarring, knowing the Japanese education system) and having enough electrical knowhow to end up participating in groundbreaking work in LCDs and Digital Camera technology.

Most techies don't end up in Executive level positions. Which is why I'm now in Product Development/Marketing. Hurray.

Yes, I wear many hats now too. None of them are of the 'money'-type, sadly.

The key, if you ask me, is to make self-promotion your job, or career even. The CIO of my company is now a VP, and he started off as an electrical engineer. I think he didn't spend a whole lot of time doing grunt work, though. If you don't like taking credit for the work of others and trying really hard to make yourself look good rather than doing a good job, you probably won't ever be in upper management.
