To add thought, but not interrupt the zen of my previous post, I plus one my post count.
It's not as though driving isn't a complex enough operation already. I shudder to think of how distracting something like this would be, or the distraction of making your car cry, or wink, or act like a japanese schoolgirl. The simple act of changing the radio station can be a life threatening exercise for some drivers, as they need to apply their intent on the radio, in order to skillfully press the correct button so the channel actually changes.
Do we really need car emoticons? I do not believe so.
There are a few Japanese who seem to believe differently.
So. Very. Fucked up.

Hmmmm, an attempt by the Japanese to turn cars into gigantic fucking hello kitty stickers.
Yep, sounds just about right. Maybe the inventors of the car are such rabid Star Wars Galaxies fans that they wanted to bring the "moods" over to the real world?
I won't be happy until my car has a gigantic fucking ram on the front of it that picks up the slow ass cars in front of me and slams them violently on the side of the road.

Bah, all they really need to do is install a marquee strip along the bottom of the back and front window, and give me a bunch of pre programmed phrases linked to some buttons on the dash. That way, the next time someone is tailgating me, I can just hit a button and flash "Back the fuck off Asshole, or I slam on my breaks" at them. Enough emotion for me :P

What, you've never seen a Chevron commercial? How about a Herbie movie? I can't say attaching artificial personalities to cars is a unique Japanese sentiment, but I can say that the strange energy the Japanese seem to possess (perhaps having something to do with cramming 127 million people on that little island) may have something to do with bringing such a sentiment into fruition.

I'm going to have to agree with SurfD here.
Something along the lines of a tree-navigation like in Tribes or Planetside for a marquee (holograms would be bonus brownie points) on cars would be great.

This is a humorous signature.

SurfD is inside my head. For years, I've dreamed of such a marquee display. I even priced it out and drew up a wiring schematic.

My marquee would have to be NC-17 to adequately display my emotions towards other drivers. And it'd likely be used as evidence in the trial of the guy who'd shoot me right in the face.

As long as the emoticons tie into the mini-gun.
