Hey, I'd run this at my old forum.

It goes something like this;

To expand everyones musical horizons, we inflict each others terrible tastes onto each other. "Members" nominate an album in turn, and anyone that can be arsed listens and writes up a short impression. Picking something somewhat of the beaten track adds to the flavour, and mixing genres just makes things better. Say one album per month/two weeks'ish. No real rules, just for anyone interested in music sign up. Mainly just checking interest, and listening through a album shouldn't take more then an hour. And you never know, you might like it :)

So any interest?

So the kids on the internet say that you're a big noise?

I'd like to participate in this, but it's too involved as is.

I might recommend individual songs instead of albums.

I, for instance, would link to www.myspace.com/chloeday and suggest people listen to the track titled "Kingpin".

I would, but the stuff I would want to link to isn't exactly free on the internet, and I have no way to rip through some of the goofy-ass European copy protection some of my albums have.

EDIT: Bleh, I might as well link Something. http://your-mom-fansubs.blogspot.com/ Ignore the text and stuff; there's an imbedded song on the page using Quicktime further down on the right, which auto-plays. By some chick named Suara. I can link to a place to download it directly if anyone wants it, but it's the same 192k rip.

Yes, I just linked to some J-Pop. From a supposedly-mediocre anime which I have not actually seen (past episode three, four months ago). Please don't ask me why I like the song, because even I myself do not know.

I should probably be dragged out into the street and shot for this one.

I'm not a big fan of a one-song-mehmeh! Getting an proper impression of an artist or album gives a much more nuanced impression. I'm on a student budget, but an album a month'ish doesn't really harm, my buttocks aren't squeezed that tight (yet). The thing is, reccommend albums, music you know? Not some soundtrack to a film (I know, some are amazing). There's loads of "good" J-Pop artists out there, and it isn't really all that hard to rip a cd and throw it up on a server, I could even host stuff.

It's all about broadening ones horizon, and a one-song-clip from myspace doesn't really do it for me. An album from, say, "Madrugada" does. The thing is that I've often been amazed by what I never thought I'd like, but did. Rules aren't fun, but enforcing some conduct is necessary, if enough people are interested; be open to stuff you didn't think you'd like, and you might be in for a surprise. I have run topics like this with some good response, even did a book thread. So it's not impossible, it's just that participation has to be good. Don't come around just wanting to push your stuff on others, be open to theirs as well. And eventually we'll get a club that runs itself, granted enough people are in on it and participating.

I'll try loosening the iron grasp now  tongue

There aren't enough good full albums out there. I can think of uhhhhhh one that I can listen to from beginning to end in one sitting - Wolfsheim's Spectators. Sure, there are others, but, yea, maybe pick a band and a selection of individual songs that can at LEAST be sampled on the web.

I don't really understand the point of this thread.

I agree with Schild. How exactly is anyone supposed to get an impression of an album if they can't....y'know....actually listen to it?

I disagree with Schild about there not being many "whole" albums worth listening to. That's a synthpop fan talkin'. ;)

That being said, the clip above was from Tom Waits' Bone Machine album. All the songs are like that, more or less. All his albums are like that, for that matter (save the first one back in the 70's -- Closing Time -- which sounds like the title suggests -- slow, depressing piano songs you'd here at closing time in a pub. His singing is a lot more "accessible" on it, I guess).

He seems to be suggesting that we actually go out and purchase these albums on the recommendations of others.

Thing is, I don't really need help finding music I like.  I know what music I like.  And, likewise,  I'm pretty sure that, while I recently purchased Cradle of Filth's "Bitter Suites To Succubi" and am really enjoying it, most of you would probably not appreciate my telling you to go spend $15 on it.

It would probably give Signe nightmares.

I like Cradle of Filth and they're not even Scandie.  Well, except for the drummer, I think.  I don't like Elvis, however.

Well, I had you figured wrong then.  I had thought Manson was as heavy as you'd go.

I will admit, Bitter Suites has the only Cradle song that has actually freaked me out.  Dinner At The Deviant's Palace took me about 4 tries to listen the whole way through.

I really enjoyed that Jpop song, actually.

Lately I've just been having fun finding some cool songs used in AMVs on YouTube.  Sticking to a Jrock theme, I'm loving Redemption by Gackt.  At least I linked to the actual music video and not an FFVII:AC AMV.

Actually the most interesting thing (for me) about listening to "foreign" music is not being able to understand the words.  I think it frees you up to listen to the sound of the song instead of concentrating on what the words say.  Not sure if that makes sense, kinda hard to explain.  But for me, it ties in with the reason for why I had a male choir at my wedding.  I can enjoy how things are sung.

/feh, don't mind me now.  Not sure I can explain this at all.

How about this then - Sometimes I enjoy the sound of a male voice much more than the words being said.

I never was one of those people who went out of their way to understand lyrics (whether a song is in English or not). I've always gravitated towards instrumentation and beats first (that includes the sound of voice). I always thought it was because I play instruments more than sing.

Have you ever listened to the Cocteau Twins or Dead Can Dance (and by extension, Lisa Gerrard)? My Bloody Valentine to an extent as well. They intentionally sing in gibberish.

Nice link there Rhyssa. I too am one of those people who tend to ignore what a song is saying; instead, I tend to focus almost solely on how a song sounds, vocals included. It's why I get crap from people for listening to stuff like Trance, or why I can hardly sing along with some of my favorite songs. /shrug

Iron Maiden just started playing Flight of Icarus on my randomized iTunes.

I like good lyrics and vocals. The cookie monster has single-handedly destroyed metal.

Yeah, I love listening to Trance when I'm really working on something at home.  Especially since I can turn the music up loud and just.. enjoy it.  Digitally Imported is the one internet radio site I have bookmarked, found that a few years ago and just love it.

I love figuring out lyrics if possible, because I'm one of those dirty people that sings along (almost compulsively).  Makes the husband nuts when I sing in his car.  But I can also turn around and ignore the actual meaning of the words sometimes and just listen to the sound as well.  I think I have more hours of soundtracks on my iPod than other music, and a lot of Celtic style as well.  I'm an equal opportunity music lover, with some exceptions (such as rap and most country).

When I was hitting up different AMVs on YouTube last week, I found what I thought were a few good songs.... until the singer kicked in.  Ugh.  Makes my vocal cords ache just listening to that stuff.  I know I'm getting old, but how can that sort of singing be enjoyable?  It doesn't add anything to the song, and takes away when the music itself is pretty darn good.  It's a shame, imo.

That was odd,  the lyrics were sort of nifty but I couldn't do too much for the song.  Trip-hop/Gothic/Electronica?  Now I remember why I usually stay away from ever talking about music...

I've yet to meet someone who didn't enjoy the hell out of "The Piano has been Drinking", if such a person exists I hope I never meet them.  So yeah, Tom Waits kicks ass, in fact Alice and Blood Money are next in my pile of things I need to rip onto my comp.

That was perfect for this morning, except I'm hungry..  :-(  I haven't tried to listen to the rest of it, I'm satisfied but I dont get the point of the thread yet.

I tend to think I like most music out there, and internet music threads always remind me otherwise ;)

I guess I'm a traditionalist in that I don't like electronic music. Blues, rock, metal, country, r&b, swing, classical, I like lots of stuff.

The anime thread being longer than the book thread makes me sad, too undecided (sorry, not longer, I meant more views)

I'm picky about music, but I'm not one to write off entire genres. I'll listen to everything from George Jones to Chopin to Nick Cave to Black Uhuru to Minor Threat.

Actually, I don't really believe anyone writes off entire genres, even when they so themselves. There's always something..

That isn't very fair at all considering the anime thread is from 02/05 and the Book review thread is a part duex from 07/06

Yeah, it's from the Geico commercial, but I really like the song. Also, I found the video to be very interesting...just wish I could get a big high-res version of it so I could pause and read all the stuff in it. I love these kinds of videos...probably for the same reason I liked Pop-Up Video.
