I get a checkerboard pattern every 5-10 minutes while playing. I have to hard reboot my computer. Sometimes it even turns off the monitor and I can still hear the game going. I have a 6800gt NVidia card and have noticed others around the net also seem to have this issue. Have any of you experienced this and successfully fixed it?

I know CiV IV was a monster resource hog. Do you have a way to monitor heat? That was my first thought. Also, do the driver update thing (in case you haven't yet) just to be sure.

Same.  Fucking.  Problem.

Apparently Civ4 and the 6800gt do not mix.  At all.  Sucks for us, I guess.

It is beyond upsetting because the game is awesome for the five minutes it lets me play.

I've yet to actually find an actual fix on the web, though last time I looked was about two months ago.

I haven't tried underclocking but I am seriously considering it. I'm a little nervous to do so to be honest. I've done the rest of that to some extent. I even upgraded my motherboard chipset drivers. The best I got was about 15 minutes of play once.

This is why I play more console games than PC games these days.

Underclocking seems to have worked. I played a short game from start to finish and my biggest issue was hitches during the Wonder movies towards the end of the game.
