http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4rJubpJctkIm tempted to roll a caster just to get the staff with the tentacles. Most of those are incredibly awesome and they cant possibly all be from ultra rare or raid only zones.

The big pole arm with the lava texture rolling over it is from the very first new instance.

I'd rather a game used unique models to allow for more starting character customization than to allow for flashy endgame ePeen.
Trolls only have six hairstyles and no character can alter their height, build, or stance... but CHECK OUT THIS STAFF.

Have you played EQ2? Not snark, a genuine question. SOE put together a very intricate character customisation system for that game (with the inherant downsides of having about three armour set textures for each armour type). End result was that if you have a six foot male human in full plate (or robe and wizard hat, for that matter)...how much of the customisation you're asking for would be noticable? Tabards, pennants and the like evolved in the real world for a reason, you know? :)

Character appearance customization is great for the first 2-3 hours of that characters life. After that, it means absolutely nothing to me. I want the things I get throughout the game to mean more to me than my character's first days of exploring. I had great fun with CoH's character creation. I filled up my slots right away. You got things to change your appearance later, but I couldn't stand the blandness to get there. I quit after 1 month. FFXI had this problem too. They had an acceptable character creation feature, but the itemization was very limited. We all looked the same wearing the same stuff even when our hair, shoulders, skin tone, etc. looked different. We were all still wearing the same leather bondage short shorts. *shudder* When a character has a helmet on, I can't tell what color eyes or hair they have, but I can sure tell what kind of kick ass dagger they are holding. I like the models posted. I don't expect to have any of them myself, but I'll have fun "Inspecting" other people that do.

Some of those new models are actually lowbie weapons. One of the spear looking things is a staff you can get from a level 3 quest. Its nice to have some decent looking low end weapons for a change.

I think some of the low level robes are quite pretty.

My friend and I started as the shortest lurikeen and the tallest furbolg (respectively) when we played DAOC. We thought it'd be nice for comic effect when we stood together. As it turns out, it wasn't really even noticeable. They probably put a lot of work into making that system work right, but to make it even worth having, the differences would have to be monstrous.

If the differences were available in character creation, somebody might see your awesome avatar and mimic it with a few clicks. This way the bitches have to grind a series of raid dungeons for hundreds of hours to 'be like you'. It's opium for the blowhard.

Character customization out the wazoo makes sense in social games, or games with no loot to speak of. WoW is all about the loot, to display your achievements. So it's what's used to set you apart.

Or the same, as the case may be.

I always wished that some sets had variations on the pieces. For example, I always thought the Arcanist Boots / Leggings looked pretty cool, but since the chest was a robe, you never got to see the boots / legs. Always wanted an option to turn my arcanist Robe in for a Vest model.

That sounds like something image designers tailors could do.

I'm getting sick of wearing my robe too.
Am I the only one who doesn't think 'random oversized sword with lighting effect and spiky bits #1232' isn't all that great?
I like some of them, but I also like seeing some of those nice swords with more detailed textures and sedade colours.
And the gun models. Oh thank god I can't use them.

A few of those guns were really cool. Then again I always liked the night-elf who's into Tech aspect, which is why I picked-up Engineering. Some of the bows were pretty keen looking as well. I can't wait to actually use some of 'em. Hell, I kept Mandokir's Sting and the Ancient Bone Bow just because they had a nifty model.

Yes yes, I too have seen the horrors of a badly implemented character customization interface.
That said, look at the trailer for Valve's Team Fortress 2... all of those characters are human. Heck, all of them are male! They are immediately recognizable from a distance as whatever class they happen to be. WoW was already fairly cartoonish and would not suffer overmuch from body types that bordered on the absurd.
But meh. Since I don't play anymore I had sort of forgotten how loot based it is and, yes, I suppose that's how people want to distinguish themselves. So be it.

I love the rocket launcher. I'm going to have to get one regardless of whether it's good.
