http://www.useit.com/alertbox/participation_inequality.html

Pretty neat article talking about web communities and how 90%(!) of the people don't actively contribute.

Quote
Wikipedia's most active 1,000 people -- 0.003% of its users -- contribute about two-thirds of the site's edits.

Yikes.

Stole this from SA, btw, where I'm snug in the 9% category (90% lurk, 9% post sometimes, 1% make up the lion's share of the content.)

I'd like to think I'm a 9%'er here as well. It's much better to be a 9%er than a 49er, F Y I.

I wonder about looks like from the users perpective?
60% lurk only.
25% contribute some, but not anywhere regularly
13% regular contributer somewhere
1.8% major contributer somewhere

I might have something to do with S-names. 7/10 Top F13 Posters have names starting with an S.

I was gonna say, the Linden guy mentioned this more than once in the virtual worlds panel at AGC.

There is a namology, not really but I forget the real name of it, but it deals with first names rather than last.  My wife has a book on it, and it is a great thing to wave about wildly as she reminds me that everyone she has met named Amy has been a total bitch, and how I am totally like Gary Oldman.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I once scared the shit out of myself when I saw this ghostly looking Conquistador head on my house's wooden walls.

I was probably 5 or 6, but I'll never forget it.

I like to project patterns as well. Mere gestures can make people see things in you that aren't really there.

But that's probably beside the point, isn't it?

There is probably some truth to first name patterns because parents pick the first names. The type of parent that chooses Britney or Skye is probably different from the parent that chooses Vera or Immogene, and these parental differences will show up in the children.

YEAH SO THERE!

Has anyeone ever looked into the whole name-personality correlation thing, and actually found some of it to be true? Same for zodiacs.

I dunno, I know someone who swears by astrology, but then there are all sorts of things that I don't get beyond their birth sign, relating to the positions of other planets, location on earth, all sorts of stuff, enough to make much finer distinctions between people other than what month they were born in.. who knows?

Here's my problem with astrology (other than it obviously being bullshit, I mean)-

I met a guy born the same day and year as me, and we were even pretty close in time of day.  We were nothing alike whatsoever.  Shouldn't the two of us have been almost exactly the same?

My initials are GWD, which I like to think of as the Hebrew spelling of "Gawd."

In Hebrew, the letters GWD (דוג -- Gimel-Vav-Dalet) means "fisher".  smiley

[edit] And if you really got literal, and followed Hebrew's reversed spelling, then "DWG" (גוד) would mean "connect".

Actually, it totally works.  I'm just like Gary Oldman.  And Gary Coleman.  And Gary Busey.  Also, Capricorns are the coolest, and so am I!  My birthdate dictates my tarot cards of Justice and Death, which is a perfect fit.  I'm also half Ox and half Rat when you look at the Chinese zodiac, which is also completely accurate.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

Eh, I can sympathize with the the lurkers.  Some sites I post comments to, others I can't be bothered to post and just read.  There's no real rhyme or reason to it, and really, if every swinging dick posted to the forums you'd end up with a lot of confusing noise from people you really can't keep track of.

This is the only forum where I "really" post (my ridiculous postcount is very misleading of what my online habits are ;)).

Every few months, I'll say something at Corp, and once in a great while, I'll converse with the people at the "Fender Forums". Occasionally I lurk at Chud, but as far as message boards go, F13 pretty much has my undivided attention.

I don't do blogs, political websites, sports websites, official game communities, or chatrooms either. I'm not even a lurker. I'm non-existent.
