Nebu is correct here.

To be fair, the author of the book that Naum linked makes some excellent points.  There is a metabolic inefficiency that does exist when replacing simple carbs with fats/proteins that can lead to weightloss even when cal in > cal out.  I just haven't found any studies that look at the long-term effects.  Most nutritional experts I've chatted with at meetings agree that low carb diets should be limited in timeframe to avoid long term detrimental effects.

Do people even stay on a diet type long enough to get to the long-term? They'll give up in a month and try another new whizbang diet a year later. why so serious?

I'd be delighted to peruse some other sources -- Taubes was the 1st I've seen to really whack at the question from a full blown "science" perspective and the data presented was overwhelming (as is the author who lives out the results -- as stated, the author eats "excessive" amounts of bacon and cheeseburgers, and posts his labs on his blog) though he is careful to note that there are factors we still do not know enough about (especially long-term). But his work makes all work hitherto that I've seen from doctors, nutritionists, diet experts du jour, etc.…  …the nutritionists and doctors keep repeating the same refrain (calories in / calories out), but the data points otherwise.

"Should the batman kill Joker because it would save more lives?" is a fundamentally different question from "should the batman have a bunch of machineguns that go BATBATBATBATBAT because its totally cool?". ~Goumindong

How did those honeycrisps get deflected? Damn you, nutrition!

Anyway, sitting with all the windows and doors open for a nice breeze in the 40s, fire crackling away and about 75 in the living room. Really wishing I had one of those Sam Adams dunkels right about now. Discovered them eating at a sports restaurant with the old lady, asked if they had any non-Bud/Miller/Coors beer on tap. Threw her for a loop, and she said, "...and Sam something.." and the other waitress said, "Dunkelweizen" YES PLEASE ZOMG WHY DID I DRIVE?

It's like my two favorite beers (dunkel and hefeweizen) got it on in the backseat of a 57 chevy and had a love child.

The service there is so completely abysmal that I can't even start to think about the food.

Anyone who lives near any kind of real city should easily be able to find good Italian food without hitting a chain anyway. It's ubiquitous.

Not in San Antonio.  The only thing you get here is steak, barbecue and mexican food.

Zocca.  It's good as long as you don't mind eating on the Riverwalk.

Who needs Italian when you have steak and barbecue?

Yeah.  And unless I go into San Francisco proper, no good Italian on the peninsula either that I've been able to find.  And I hate going into the city.

I like recommendations!  All my friends have shit for taste or extreme low budgets.  I ask about Mexican food and they say "go to El G's!" and that's one step above the mobile lunch stands (and very good, but sometimes you want more variety).

Hmm.. I think I'm going to have to make a trip to the store and hunt this down. First time I've heard of it and I've got a similar love for dunkel and hefe.

Similar to that one is the classic Schneider Aventinus.  Going to give a clone of that a shot this fall, now that I have decoction experience under my belt.

All love for dark wheat beers.  Well, minus the Shiner double wheat I tried last night - bit sour for my palate.   swamp poop

Casto Street in Mountain View (where both restaurants Ingmar recommended are) has a bunch of pretty good places for various sorts of food. It's part of why we still live in our apartment, they're all in walking distance.  why so serious?

Maggiano's is good for a chain.  And they have gluten free which is crucial for me.  I really can't do a real Italian restaurant due to the gluten issues.

It seems pretty much all restaurants in suburban southern NJ are chains. All of them - I got up to visit folks, and they can only suggest chains to eat at.  Sad Panda

It's not just the restaurants.  I guarantee you that you could go to any one suburban area in the country and compare it to a similar suburban area in another state and 90% of the stores would be the same:  Lowes, Home Depot, Office Max, Office Depot, Chipotle, Starbucks, Target, etc.

When it's a Monday and between a seedy red lobster and the olive garden, I'll pick the olive garden.

And their salads are delicious... And their salad dressing is gluten free.
