I was thinking of Nerf yesterday. Drove to a mall an hour away, the closest gaming shop. I had corresponded with them via email about selling my magic cards, they said to bring them in.

What they didn't say was that only one guy can process them and that he wouldn't be there that day. So two hours of driving time + gas out the window.

Rather than go full Nerf, I just had the kid working check the schedule to let me know when the guy I need to see would be in. In the back of my brain, I'm screaming at him that he's screwing a customer and demanding he get the guy on the phone.

You should have brought Nerf in on a consultation.

And I think that Nerf would be a much better attorney than physician.  He's going to drown in indecision as hie mind attempts to avoid litigation.

I would second this.  As a medical school graduate I can tell you that it isn't particularly glamorous.  Residency has gotten much kinder than 10-15 years ago, but it is still a lot of hard work.  Something that is hard for people that haven't been associated with medicine to comprehend is the tenacious negative atmosphere that surrounds hospitals and primary care.  Get experience, it will serve you well.

Sooo, the root of the tooth is cracked. Looks like I am going to have to have it yanked (he did not have time today and he said he would probably have to put me under for it, yay) and get an implant put in.

But since I have no nerve there, I am going to live with the crater until I have a job (which hopefully will be soon).

Speaking of doctors, I finally found a GP I think fits the bill. Saw her yesterday, she's a local gal who has spent the last 15 years or so practicing in England and just moved back in the area to be around her aging parents. Really happy, plus as an early patient, she had more time to spend with me chatting about health care in general, we're really on the same page on a lot of things.

Funny moment when she leeft me to get into the little paper robe thingy - being new she handed me the wrong kind. She just didn't know which drawer to look in, saw a bunch in there and gave me one. It was child-sized. So I put it on as a dashing half-cape. She quickly learned I'm comfortable in my skin

Good choice Sky.  I always pick a woman for my GP.  Women tend to be much better listeners and more open to less traditional approaches.  They also tend to be better physicians as many choose to be a GP for a more balanced lifestyle rather than because it was their only choice due to shitty performance in med school.

The females in my medical school class and surrounding classes were either really, really, really good or awful.  There didn't seem to be much in the middle (I think all of the top 10 students were women, and most of the bottom third).  The guys were usually fairly bland, no all stars.  I didn't see what you're talking about with the lifestyle choices amongst them as much, and we had a 60-40 split of women to men, so there were a lot of women.  We had a lot of orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, plastic surgeons, ENTs, Urologists.  Surgery was popular with the women for some reason.

Isn't there some research out there that shows that women are better listeners in this position?  It seems I've read something like that before.

It's a decent little blurb from the Atlantic on the insane pricing of scholarly articles, some of which may run as high as $50 or $75, and subscriptions to these journals can be well over $500, depending on the title. 

What are the costs in this new Internet age? As you might suspect, they have plummeted (an article I wrote several years ago here is helpful), to roughly 1/100 of what they were if you produce the article as an electronic document only rather than in print.  Print is no longer necessary or even desired.  Why, then, the $30-$50 financial firewall that you need to pay to see the article I want to show you?  In part, tradition.  In part, publishers keep doing what they do and the scholars do not complain much, since their subscriptions come through their grants or university libraries.  But the libraries complain, individuals like all of you reading this should complain, and everyone in the developing world complains.

It is interesting that the costs of things have done nothing but go up, regardless of the fact that there is no printed paper any more.  I used to take it for granted when I had unlimited access in the university library, but now when I want an article I either have to trudge over there or pony up the big bucks.  Hopefully this will change in the future.

Publishers are the devil.  The articles are sent in for free.  They are peer reviewed for free.  They come in droves because academia requires them for tenure. 

Academic journals are the biggest racket going.  Some European journals cost in excess of $10k a year for a subscription comprising of 6-12 issues.  It's insane.

I know people who work in the scientific journal publication business.  They tell me that their industry is doomed and they are going out of business in droves because they can't make any money.

I've heard that before also, Murgos.  Some things that make me wonder, however, is that new journals pop up all the time and very few of them ever stop production.  There has to be some money in it for companies like Saunders and Williams and Wilkins to stay in it and/or sell their businesses.  Gotta make money to find a buyer for things.

I know it's popular to hate on Tom Cruise, but I think he's actually quite good for movies like that.  He's a better actor than people give him credit for....because we're all to busy noticing what a douche he is in real life.

He's been in some really good movies-  Jerry Maguire, Rain Man, Risky Business, Top Gun, The Color of Money, Cocktail, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Magnolia, and so on.  The dude can act, and tends to choose roles which suit his personality.  And he was even smart enough to avoid getting involved in Battlefield Earth.

I even liked Valkyrie, although it gets panned by some.

There are a few movies that he branched out for, but you're right that he has a narrow range.  That isn't a bad thing, necessarily.  Lots of people can't even do narrow range. 

I've heard that Tropic Thunder is good.  Haven't had time to see it yet.  Also checked out the Lions and Lambs IMDB entry.  That looks really good, think I'll check itout.

Lions for Lambs is excellent, but be warned it's political and (for me) made me really quite angry.  Good film.

Tropic Thunder is just mindless 'fun' that I found was actually quite a hard slog (mostly due to Stiller being bad).

I thought he did a decent job in Collateral.  At the time I thought he was branching out and playing something different.  I remember the buzz around the movie was that, holy shit, Tom Cruise plays a bad guy.  But now I kind of feel like that was just the first taste of 'the real' Tom Cruise.  Still, it's a pretty good movie.

I like Tom Cruise in Tom Cruise movies. He plays himself, but usually it's appropriate. Unlike, say, that dickwad Kevin Costner.

Collateral was different, sure, but again I really thought it was just Tom Cruise without the zany smiling antics.  That's kind of how I imagine an evil Tom Cruise to be.  Unlike, say, Keanu Reaves, he didn't 'shift' for me as a baddie.  (Reaves makes a great villian).

Also, he was totally outshone by Foxx.  Totally.

(Then again, Foxx makes a lot of his fellow actors duller by comparison.  Even Downey.  Yikes.)
