ACK!  Sorry to hear that, Ironwood.

Full blown cold has arrived.  It's been years since I've lost my voice, so this will be not fun.  That I can handle though; what I can't stand is how everything ends up sounding like my ears are stuffed with cotton that I hate.

Single water pipe in the front of the house towards the Garage, ground floor.  Heating still works.

So that's not as bad as it could be.

Downside is it turns out our insurers (both of them) are utter cunts.  All promises of help when you're paying, fuck all when you have a problem.  I may rage more on this later.

It's 45 in the house right now. 9 outside though.

My heating went out once and the house got down to 51 overnight.  I thought I had frostbite.  How the fuck do you stand it?

If your house is 45 degrees I stand by my "make a blanket out of the cats" comment.   Ohhhhh, I see.

I'd worry about burst pipes if I let my house get that cold.

One time when I was living by myself at my parent's place during a Winter while they were living overseas I kept the heat off cause the house has central heating so it's wasteful to heat it for just one person even if you close most of the vents and my room was always toasty warm with 3 computers running. One morning, though, when I woke up and went to the bathroom it was so cold that I could see my breath in the air. I turned the heat on after that awesome, for real

I, uh... well... I know what I meant to write there, but I blame something for the sheer sentence construction fail there.   swamp poop

I could never let our house get below 65, mostly because I feel the cold very easily.  As in, my fingernails will start turning blue because my hands are freezing and I'll put a blanket over my legs in the middle of the summer when I'm sitting downstairs reading.  I'm usually not ready to turn on the AC until it gets near to 90 though.  Unfortunately, the husband is the opposite so I tend to dress warmly inside my own house while he's wearing shorts and a t-shirt in the middle of the winter.

If he wears shorts Monday, he's likely to have his bits fall off. I'm hoping to have something sorted before the next cold snap. I can deal with 45 (warmer in the basement where all the pipes are) but 9f as a daytime high will likely make it a bit too cold in here

Don't you have to get below 32 to burst pipes?

Depends on how well-insulated your house is and where the pipes are.  Besides this, it's possible to worry about something that is not likely to happen.

That's our house. She wears multiple layers and blankets. When I get the stove cranking up to 80º, she might shed the blanket and the top sweater. I call it a victorian porn moment. Meanwhile I struggle to keep any clothes on.

Pipes: if it's 45 in the house, it can be below freezing in the basement or wall cavities where the pipes are run. I have an exterior wall I'm always concerned about, especially when I run the woodstove, since the basement isn't heated (furnace only). No leaks yet but it sweats like a mofo and worries me constantly.

I'm afraid a lot of folks will be getting this for Christmas, bro.  It's a tough world out there right now.  I wish I could give my employees raises, but it isn't in the cards this year.

What I like is not getting a raise while hearing that HP has sold lots of computorz and Q4 revenue was up 10.1%.  Everyone in the world is a fucker.

Pfft.  HP hadn't given out a raise to the employees in the 7 years I was there.  The only reason I got a pay incease in March 2007 was to bring me up to my pay grade and then my boss used that as an excuse to not include me in the departmental bonuses that December, since I'd "already gotten a bonus that year".

As someone who was once in on such discussions from a management side, that's pretty much what the corporate office tells you to begin with.  "Your department gets an $X/ x% increase for salaries this year.  Split it up as you see fit, but know that raises you gave prior to x/x/xx are included in that percentage."

So blame the corporate beanfuckers, not your boss.

The past cannot be changed. The future is yet within your power.

As far as bonuses and special monies, I agree with Ironwood.  But my comment was about the typical 2-3% bump that used to be standard.  I do plan to work my "magic" and make something happen.  Basically, either more money or less work, I will take either one at this point.  Although, really, what I expect to happen is that I work more and slide myself into some better money either via mundane pay adjustments or via title change.  Also IBM conferences.  Sweet, sweet conferences.  Next year's is in Miami. awesome, for real

I figure not getting the 3% cost-of-living increase means I do 3% less work. Since it's the second pay freeze in two years...

Just take up smoking, all of the extra breaks will amount to alot more than 3% of your work time you spend smoking.
