I've started watching a British night-time soap/drama (Hotel Babylon) on Netxflix - and I'm kind of enjoying it.

Should I be worried?

Ho ho ho, the Jersey Girl never gets tired of hearing how NJ sucks, sorry you have to go back there! Ha ha! Seriously, I love NJ. I'd go back more if it wasn't such pain in the ass. MY part of NJ is lovely.

But yeah, part of my dread is the boxes are still sort of new and I've seen passengers fuck up METAL DETECTORS (pro tip: cel phones set those off, people!) and hold up the line, I am thinking these new boxes where you apparently have to strike a pose and shit are not going to be better.

When I wrote the post, I was actually thinking of Newark airport specifically, and in general about the apocalyptic wasteland surrounding it.  To my great surprise, I can see by flying over the rest of the state that it appears to be quite gorgeous.

Think it would be too hard to see mini-sized.

It took me a second to see that it was any different than the one they have already.

Ya, getting felt up at the airport sucks. There's always a queue.

I've been wondering what would happen if you acted a little too into it.  Not something I'd try myself but I think I could talk someone else into doing it.

But probably.

We saw him in October. I believe he's the only non-musician on the 'must buy tickets' list. So worth it, and the 2-hour drive (each way) because we live in a cultural wasteland.

Got all the rest of this year's wood in over the weekend, got the winter changeover done, taped and first coat on the drywall in the kitchen/front room. Heat kicked on this morning for the first time since friday morning. Love wood heat, got a bit chilly at night over the weekend, but was nice and toasty inside. Working on some air current balancing to keep it from getting too torrid and get the heat to the rest of the house properly.

Just got a rejection "letter" in the form of an email with no subject about one of the jobs I interviewed for in the second week of september.

I really would have liked that job too.

Oh well.

Sorry. sad

I'm trying to get serious about searching.  Temporary problems are finally resolved, but long-term looks very bleak.  Mid-term may not be as stable as we were hoping.  Currently banging my head against my desk trying to write a decent resume and about to go into full freak-out mode again because I'm so generalized that I seem a poor fit for any position I look at.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

It's a horrendous situation out there, right enough.

I'm hoping to get my own situation clarified and sorted by the end of the week, but it's been a trying time.

Thank God the bank were there and at my side the entire time with an understanding and helpful attitude.

I'm right there with you.

I have found that (1) My resume writing skills stopped developing 9 years ago and (2) I am unable to lie on a resume. Fuckit.

Attempting to switch gov't jobs ATM, I already sort of adjusted to the shit pay with the 1st position so everything from here in will be an improvement.  I am also finding very little in the way of competition so that is a bit of a morale boost.

Who is "we"?
"We" is the research group I am currently with and who may or may not have gotten a much needed grant recently.  Life is about to suck for more than me, but now I'm an additional drain on their own support.

Within a minute of posting a friend forwarded the description of a position which is opening soon that we had talked about a few weeks ago.  Some of it I can do, some of it I could do but it's outside my experience, and some I'm concerned if I'll ever be good at.  I have perhaps a month to teach myself some of the middle category, if I can pull myself together enough.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Your own lack of confidence will be your downfall.  Know why idiots get promoted? They act like they can do it, then just plug away until they get promoted again or move on.  Being competent is just a way of pigeonholing yourself into middling jobs.  why so serious?

Its a research job. I'll be interviewing senior citizens and recording their stories of the old times, with a view to displaying CDs and stories in the library and possibly publishing a book. Its a project they have been trying to get off the ground for years, apparently.

Fuck it its doubling the amount of money in my hand a week. \O/

Actually this is true. Frankly, most jobs don't expect you to know everything. They just expect you to know enough to get by and learn the rest on the job ASAP.

It sure is.  But strangely enough my lab is actually hiring and has been for a while (despite "continuing resolution" issues).  No one wants to move to outside of San Francisco though.

I'm not looking for advancement (also another serious detriment).  I want a stable job which I can take pride in and pays the bills while leaving me enough free time to enjoy myself a little.  I will be studying, and I do think I'm likely to be as good a candidate as they can get since it is asking for both hardware and software.  Not having much linux admin experience is bad.  Being able to say I single-handedly ran a VAX-VMS machine after being self-taught hopefully offsets that.

But yes.  A lack of confidence has always been one of my biggest issues.  It's been damning on more than one occasion.

Do you have Unix experience?  Hell, MS-DOS?  If so you will pick up Linux juuuuuuuust fine.  Do not sell yourself short.

Protip- make sure to follow SAR on your interview, it will most likely be structured.  (Situation, Action, Result).

Have you ever had a situation where a database was lost?

"Yes.  In my previous position we had a critical failure of the environmental controls which cause all our servers to crash.  I immediately remoted into an offsight location, configured a few servers, and began recovering from our backup server (which came back online after I pointed some rotating fans on it).  We had about 6 hours downtime, but after that all services were up and running for the workgroup!"
