Congrats on the lateral move, Chedder. Is it a better position or one you'd rather do instead of what you had been doing?
Its a "lateral" promotion because my base salary and career "level" do not change; my roles, responsabilities, and influence have just been magnified. I also get a new title and a hell of a time explaining my job function. I mean, there is more for a yearly bonus, so it technically is more money. It is a MUCH better position and pretty much allow me to leverage future opportunities. It plays to my strengths and is stuff I REALLY enjoy doing - so its a win across the board. Even though I knew it was coming I am still a bit in shock; hell, we have not even removed the laid off managers from payroll yet.

No Nerf, but I put a link to this very thread and I said that you all can guarantee for my purity. I even mentioned your case, and see if they can take a look at your lawn from a Michigan perspective.

What's a job?
Sorry...had a bad week of job searching culminating with applying for a job I had sworn I would never do again after I graduated.
On a different note:
Americans need to learn 2 things: How parking lots with angled parking work (hint, each row is NOT a two way street) and that sidewalk =/= sidebike.

I saw people doing this wrong at the DMV yesterday.

My ex has finally gotten around to filing paperwork. So before the end of the year I will be unattached officially (finally).

I guess the real problem can be put to WalMart as their lots have both two-way street style lanes, and angled parking on each side, as well as proper one-way angled parking. Oh and weird use of stop signs.
Basically, the worst traffic management in the history of the world can be found in any WalMart parking lot. It is like they make it nigh impossible to get into or out of their lots on purpose.

You should come to San Antonio if you want to see some god damned stupid traffic planning.

He would have to get AT&T to sell their Illinois operations to Verizon for that to become even a remote possibility.

So I think we've discovered one reason why the house across the street keeps getting such "quality" tenants in it - the landlord is advertising on Craigslist to rent it out. And one of the next door neighbor's put their house on the market this past week. Doing some research, they bought it in Dec2005 for $250k, which is about right for value. It's the biggest house on the street, 4 bedrooms, at least 2 full baths, sun room, big deck, all-in-all wouldn't be a bad house. They've listed it for $155k, which means they're looking to just dump it for the loan value and walk away. Talked to the wife and they're basically moving across the street to a rental house which isn't much smaller, if at all. The wife claimed that their mortgage amount jumped about $900/mo even though she said they have a fixed-rate, plus taxes were about 3x more than they were told when they bought the house, and they've had issues with the flood insurance (do we need it or not) in the past. My biggest boggle - apparently her husband said that they will probably need to buy some new furniture once they are in the rental, and that was after we'd just finished talking about how much new stuff they had to buy 5 years ago when they moved into this place. I kind of feel bad they need to dump their house like this, but judging by the outside, I'd hate to see the inside. They've really not kept the place up at all, despite putting new siding and a new roof on it this past summer (but no new trim or soffits, nor did they even paint the doors to clean them up). I know I won't miss their 3 fucking little dogs running around. The wife was amazed when I mentioned -again- that their dogs leave the yard and roam the street when someone just lets them out off leash. She can't believe that the one dog does that (nor could her husband *gasp*) when I told her that. I just think to myself "yeah, there's a reason I have a cable for my dog and he doesn't go outside without in attached" and move along, but at least this means I won't have to fling dog poop from their beasts into their driveway anymore.

This economy has exposed how stupid/willfully ignorant people were about buying property. The probable reality is that your neighbors were just idiots, like most people who got into a 250k when the economy was decent. 2005 was at the peak of the subprime lunacy, and I'd bet dollars to donuts that your neighbors were upside down on that loan before they even started, but they didn't know it / care.
Also, taxes 3x more than they were told? What? Millage rates are posted by every county in the state, and every major city has them are online. That shit ain't hard to find.

I realized today that its faster to search, download, and import a audio CD from usenet than it is to put the CD into my drive and rip it to my drive.

The same is true of movies. If I want a digital copy of one of my DVDs and I'm not particular about the format or size I'll bittorrent it rather than ripping it. This goes double if it's something that spans multiple discs, like a TV series.

If he's downloading MP3s that make sense. On a 10 Mbps connection you can download an entire 60 MB album in MP3 format in ~60 seconds.
If he's actually downloading Red Book audio (i.e. 16-bit 44.1 KHz PCM audio) faster than he can rip a CD to WAV files he's either got a really really *really* slow CD-ROM drive -- like 10x or slower -- or he has a ridiculously fast Internet connection, like 100 Mbps fast.

My work connection is 36 MB a second (yes, big MB). I'd still rather rip it since I know the encoding will be good and it doesn't take that long even on my ancient work machine.

Exactly. I've downloaded songs from the 'net before and the thing that annoyed me most was getting like 3 different mixes worth of songs for an album, where 1/3 of the songs are REALLY quiet, another 1/3 are REALLY loud, and another 1/3 have popping and bubble sounds in them. Rip from CD == done in less than 5 minutes and done correctly.
