Still in the datacenter.

Are you still in the datacenter? Inquiring minds are eager to know!

That's a bad day. A bad, smelly, stressful day. I hope someone did their jobs right and everything came back up, minus the one or two inevitable dead servers.

Anyone had (or known someone who has had) turbinate reduction surgery?

Some good information HERE.

It will be a tad rough immediately after the procedure, but you'll be glad you did it once the healing has completed.  If it helps, ENT's are typically the top medical students (along with orthopedic surgeons).  You're in the care of the best hands in medicine.

Thanks, man.  My ENT mentioned it today...

I figure that whatever side effects there are can't be as bad as what I'm living with right now.

Hold onto that thought.  It's well worth the short-term discomfort (which will be minimal if you have a good doc) for the long term fix.  This is well outside of my area of expertise, but I'll do my best to get you any information that you need.  Feel free to PM me if I can help in any way.  Just remember that I'm some random internet guy.  Take all of my opinions as just that, opinions.

I did go home last night and slept for six hours.  Turns out the power failed again shortly after I went to sleep and we spent all day reacquainting ourselves with fsck.  I get the master list down to 4 out of 235 servers and the power drops again.

Oh it does.  We are using the generator a lot.  For the next several days, in fact.

Not HP's datacenter, by the way. Ohhhhh, I see.

Technical theories aside, something is not allowing us to reconnect to the grid.  Capacitors have been replaced, other bits too.  I probably need to be keeping this under wraps but I haven't had much sleep.

The good news is that I am getting good at recovering from genuine disasters due to having three in one weekend.

Well, I would assume the company you're providing support for has some flavor of DR document, right?  If not, I'm sure you'd be qualified to write one by now.

So after being away on business for three days, on Saturday I drove 191 miles in 3 hours flat only to be greeted by an apartment building that was without power.

For two days.

And I live on the 10th floor. Ohhhhh, I see.

There could be any number of things that went wrong and need to be replaced that could be causing it.  Luckily when my machine dies, I have a full-time maintenance staff and only get called when shit really hits the fan and they need me to come out and show them what's wrong and how to fix it.

Typical things people say to me when they find out I commute by two wheels:

"Oh, you ride a motorbike. I once knew someone who had a really, really bad accident while riding one of those. They got hit by a car/bus/lorry/train* and got hospitalised/lost a limb/were paralysed/died*. So anyway..."  (*delete as applicable)

Anybody else ride? Do you get the same? Why the fuck do people feel the need to tell me these things?

Yeah I get that occasionally too, I think they're just jealous - they want to ride but are too scared awesome, for real

It's worse if you know a paramedic though, then you get the full colour, scraped-off-the-road stories. Head on collision with the biker on the wrong side of the road is the usual example...

My ex is an ER physician.  That's the only reason that I haven't bought a motorcycle to commute myself.  The sheer number of idiots texting in their SUVs during the morning commute make it tough to feel safe on a motorcycle.

To be fair, though, anyone on two wheels is automatically more difficult to spot in your mirror.  Add to the fact that many of them (on the bikes) ride like complete idiots, swerving in an out an going between two cars....and not wearing helmets?  Pretty dense.

Not saying you are like that, but I think this has a lot to do with why you receive those kinds of comments.

I keep wanting to get my motorbike licence (having ridden one for a while in Vietnam a few years ago) and have been too lazy to get round to it. Any time I mention that I'd like to get the licence people will generally start with the horror stories unless they themselves drive a bike.

Think it's probably more to do with trying to find a connection rather than a judgement. Kinda like a "So you like rugby? A friend of mine plays for <insert team here>..." It's just that for some reason the only way people associate with bikers is through horror stories. It might not be just bikers though - maybe they say that sort of thing to everyone:

"Oh, you're going to South Africa for a holiday are you? I had a friend who went there - she got mugged right outside the hotel she was staying in."
"Oh, you like beer. I know someone who loved beer but he had liver failure and needed a transplant."
"Oh, you play World of Warcraft? My cousin played that but got addicted and stopped going to work. He lost his job, his wife walked out on him and he ended up hanged himself from a tree in the park. His body was found by a young mum and her three year old son."
"Oh, you're wife's having a baby? I had a friend who was pregnant. Her baby was still born."

Sure, but it's more than just making a connection.  Notice how in every example you gave (ficticious as they may be), the other person is being decidedly negative.  This probably just comes from the simple truth that people like to be superior and will use opportunities like that to bring you down a peg.  People do that all the time, do they not?

Considering most people think anyone that rides a bike is a gang member, it's not surprising they look down their nose at it, even if subconsciously.

Like someone else said, they're just trying to relate and make small talk. Most people probably don't know much to say about motorcycles other than relating a story about someone that got hurt on one.  For instance..  awesome, for real

It's not something I'm interested in, especially in Arizona.  While the open spaces and highways are nice, I imagine the heat would be a little uncomfortable at times. Not that I'd be allowed to anyhow.  My safety is monitored at all times.

In fun news, for the first time we let my son cry himself to sleep last night.  swamp poop  He's come down with a bad case of the "Mama"s.

While it can be brutal for both child and parents to go through that, I can personally vouch that a little toughness at bed time will work MIRACLES for you later.  Both of my kids have been great sleepers from an early age (and that includes getting ready for bed).  Very much a learned behavior.
