It's been an interesting week.

That is utterly bizarre, and something almost out of office space, unlike Yegolev.  Good luck.

Ah crap, sorry to hear that, Lantyssa.  That's got to be a horrible position to be in (and definitely worse than I had it this time last year when I was told at the start of August I was going to be laid off in a month.  "But keep on working at the same time doing your same job, okay?")  Hope you get back on your feet quick.

As for me, it'll be 11 months on 9/9 and two good prospects I thought I had went bust.  *sigh*

It's been an interesting week.

Returned early from medical leave yesterday.  (Side note: Abscesses are not fun.)  Get a warning from an as of today ex-coworker and learn about a slew of positions going away.  Got to spend last night in utter fear.

Get called in for termination, reduction, what-the-fuck-ever this morning.  Only I was on some weird pay thing between departments set up 15 years ago, so they tell me it's 50%, not complete.  Turns out this was an error, but the letter was already sent to HR.  That means it's probably locked in for the year.  (Fiscal year starts tomorrow.)  My immediate boss has already offered to cover the rest while he can.

So I'm fired, but not.  Not sure who my actual boss is, since it was a position for the department that no longer funds me.  Heads might roll because they failed to cut mine properly.  I'm in limbo, and still have to look for a job, but may have some time to do so.  Which is good, since I purchased a new house in April.  But that means I can't move without taking a huge loss and tax hit.

The economy sucks and, well, I have no one to really fall back on like a dual-income married couple might.  So it could be a lot worse, but it isn't really a great spot to be in.  I'm a huge mix of emotions.

If there's one thing worse than being a shitbag company, it's being BAD at it.

Sorry to hear.

Best wishes as well Lantyssa.

So your position no longer exists, but 50% of it i still on one departments books, so you still get paid 50%? Boggle.

Being a single new home owner, I know it's tough - you don't have that extra income to fall back on. Personally, I had to get a room mate and its actually worked out suprisingly well.

Sorry about that Lant. Nothing like getting laid off but with just enough hope you won't be on the streets in a month but probably will have to endure a slow trainwreck into fiscal ruin! LOVE THIS ECONOMY!

Thanks all.  Feeling better today.  Having a dark sense of humor helps, I think.  Still in limbo, but the shock is past.

MrHat, I do IT support.  A little bit of everything over the years.  I really enjoy it, but in academia.  If I have to go corporate I'm not sure it'll be a good fit, so I'm going to think about other areas, too, once I know enough to start planning.

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part... except for when you are my supervisor. Ohhhhh, I see.

Going to have to fucking bag a Grand Canyon rafting trip in Sept. in order to do field work for my supervisor in order to spend use or lose FY10 money.

I am so pissed I am nearly speechless.   Anyone else I would tell them to take a hike, but first year on the job at this office, and it is my supervisor so I get to act jolly and pretend that "no, no, I didn't really want to travel down the grand canyon for my first time ever with a bunch of close friends..."   fuck me

Meh.  Have to go to a press conference tomorrow for one our US Senators, so he can talk about how he wants to give an org I'm on the Board of money (and likely we won't see a dime), but at least the panicked getting ready for the event is throwing our fund raising and programming schedule into chaos.

I wasn't going to respond at first but Ironwood warmed me up.  Don't be a punk, Fraeg.  No one respects a punk.  I have already told the #2 account manager that he could take a hike last time he asked me on a Friday afternoon to work that weekend.  I had planned to take my wife to Charleston to see Smashing Pumpkins and I got pretty pissed on the phone.  He hasn't asked me for that sort of silly shit since.

I totally agree with everyone else. Doubly so if if there's money already put down on deposits/plane tickets, out of town trips reserved, that kind of thing.

Work is just a job - it's not life. Working during a weekend is one thing. Helping coworkers out, doing a bit extra to not letting projects slip is fine. Canceling a vacation is completely something else.

If I've given appropriate notice, I'll give my 2 weeks before I cancel a vacation trip. It would take something TRULY awful at work to get me to cancel. I really can't think of a situation where I would do it - maybe if I needed the money so bad and had 0 prospects and had no money in reserve. Obviously we don't know the details but I'd think long and hard before I'd agree to something like that. I'd just wonder if your boss would be willing to do the same, cancel his vacation. Chances are, probably not.

People often get into this mindset of 'we can't let this fail or fall'. Guess what? You can and it can. Sometimes, you need to let things fail to send up red flags. Sometimes that money needs to get lost once, hopefully so procedures get put in place to prevent it from happening in the future.

Life goes on - when deadlines slip, when money is lost, and when servers crash. It's not worth trashing your personal life and a once in a lifetime trip for.

Easier said than done in an economy like this, but yeah...unless you were sure to get fired (and maybe not even that should stop you, depending on your situation), your supervisor needs to be told to get bent.

What everyone else said.  This is the test request. One you could have easily said "Um, no.  That's weeks away and I have a vacation planned already.  Ask so and so, " to.   Once you give in he knows he's got you and they'll only get worse.

That is a sad fact about human nature. On the other hand there's now the factor of going back and telling his boss he actually had a vacation planned and won't be working that time, though short term bad blood may be better than becoming the supervisor's go-to guy for covering fuck ups.
