Also thank fuck for socialised medicine. I dread to think what two nights in an ICU, three nights on a general ward, an MRI test, catheter and the rest of the battery of things they did to me would have cost in the US. No charge for any of that here.
You wouldn't have gotten the three nights in the general ward, most likely. My friend's father needs some arterial surgery I don't quite understand. They opened him from crotch to ankle, then stitched and stapled him shut. Didn't work. Next day did his arm from pit to wrist. Didn't work. Let him recover a day and did the other arm or leg, at this point I was trying to gloss over the details of horror. So far it 'seems' to be working (he's not dead). He only got two days to recover and was sent home. He has "good" insurance, according to the friend.

I got to find out on Friday specifically how having a heart attack sucks. That was fun. Turns out I'd strained my heart at the gym about a week earlier and a bout of flu that was just settling in at the time triggered a whole bunch of stuff that can be condensed down to myocarditis. I was taken to hospital in a hurry with a suspected heart attack and was only allowed to go home about three hours ago.

I've now got to spend the next 6-8 weeks doing absolutely fuck all. I can't go shopping in the street outside my house at all or climb the stairs in my apartment more than once a day. I am going to go absolutely crazy.

oooooooo!  Stop that, dammit!   ACK!  Srsly.  No more of that.  Don't make me unlike because you might pop your clogs any minute.   ACK!  I'm very fragile regarding other people's health issues.  Even if they only live in my computer.  swamp poop   I can force myself to forget who you are if you continue this.

How old are you, if you don't mind me asking?  My family has a history of this, too, so it scares me quite a bit.  I have cholesterol problems (mostly genetic), but I try to stay in really good shape.

I'm 37 (I'm not old). I also don't smoke, barely drink alcohol, have low cholesterol and am generally in pretty good shape health-wise (beyond carrying about 15 extra kilos).

Dang, you've got all sorts of risks now now though, since having a HA before 45 is a huge thing (or some I'm told in relation to my own family history).  Good luck and glad to hear you're out of the hospital now.  Time to start trolling the book thread for some new books to read, methinks.

Random:

YAY!  It's time for the semi-annual mangling of the trees in worship to ComEd!  I've never seen such chop jobs done until I moved up here to Northern Illinois.  Look, I understand you don't want tree branches falling down and taking out the lines.  It makes sense.  But is it really necessary to hack the trees up like that just for clearance?

Oh, and neighbor next door - no, I really do not want to take down the tree next to the telephone pole.  Yes, it's leaning crazy time.  It's been like that for the 9 years I've lived in this house.  Yes, it now looks freaky from your house after the mangling, I DON'T CARE!  Stop offering to give me the name of the tree service you use so we can take it down.  I like my tree considering it's one of only two that are actually on my property, so leave it the fuck alone.

My mom the cardiac nurse always tells me to get my flu and other sicknesses taken care of (despite wanting to just lounge in bed and let them pass) because apparently some of those infections can really put a strain on your heart when you least expect it, even in the under 30 crowd.  Similar to why people need to have good oral hygiene, etc.  Good thing you caught it all in time.  As said, get a good cardiologist and do what they say and the chances of recurrence should be minimized.

It's all cumulative.  2 things that wouldn't phase you when you're 100% healthy will take you down in a heartbeat when you are compromised.  Lessons hard-learned.

And you can do something productive with your time.  Maybe download FFH2...   awesome, for real

So I am experiencing the joy of sitting across the room from a guy who we are going to fire in about three hours, and he has absolutely no idea. He's a grumpy, 50 something Greek man.

This may not be a pretty morning at work.

I am fortunate in that it will be my manager and his manager doing the job, however I am the victim's immediate manager, so based on past experience, the victim will somehow assume it is entirely my fault he sucked at his job.

Damn, sometimes I forget how many levels of management there are in this company.

Honestly, I don't give that much of a shit - he's a nice guy but he really isn't good at the job. He's been on the chopping block for a couple years, he's only stuck around due to political issues with headcount. I just have a personal weakness against people disliking me, and I fully expect he will blame me for not standing up for him and telling upper management what a good job he's done.

He's actually quite delusional about his job performance.

Probably because his immediate supervisor never gave him clear, workable feedback.

Water kills thousands of people a year, regardless of containments.  Heck, as far as spreading needless FUD: the very act of eating can kill you.

I'm actually pretty good at telling people what to do. I'm the guy in the group of friends that reads the instructions for the new game, and then explains it to everyone else.

Firing people is not fun though, unless you really don't like the preson you are firing. That is rather rare though, as I tend to get along with people. Even people no one else gets along with.

Not pointing fingers over his performance, that's entirely up to the individual in question.  I was commenting on the part where you said he didn't know he was dangerously close to the chopping block, that sounds like poor feedback.

If every time you complete a task for your boss he tells you what you did poorly and how you could have done it better and you fail to improve then you should be perfectly well aware for whom the bell tolls.  If all your manager ever says is, "Thanks, good job." then yeah, you would think you were doing ok.
