Welcome to Level Ten!

He's called the Star Gazer now, due to unfortunate web search results.

Let's get back to Isao Tomita.  Pandora is being stupid so I am going to need to do real research and buy things, I guess.

You probably want Kosmos, which is one of his better albums, and features The Sea Named "Solaris" which is the famous piece derived from Bach that is featured in Carl Sagan's Cosmos.

Along similar lines but of more interest to my ears are Klaus Schulze's X, Edgar Froese's Stuntman, Synergy's Cords, and most famously Vangelis' Albedo 0.39.

I'm not sure Vangelis is exactly what I'm driving toward but then I only listened to that one piece.  Good stuff, though.  I'll run with your list and see what I get, and many thanks.

I think Tangerine Dream will also keep me busy for a bit.  I think I am also a dork in music.

I like Tangerine Dream.  It's excellent stoner music.  (except when they muzak-i-fy it and play it in elevators)

Edgar Froese has remade a number of Tangerine Dream classics lately. You don't want them, you want the originals. Stick to Phaedra over Phaedra 2005 for example. I don't know what the fuck he was thinking.

That's the one I meant.  Haven't heard that in 28 years or so.

When Tangerine Dream discovered sequencers they went through an excellent phase.  One of their best tracks of that period got used in Risky Business (I think it was called "Love in a Real Train" or something like that).

If people like ambient house then I'd really, really recommend Papua New Guinea by Future Sound of London, which they released in '91 or '92.  Very influential album and also one of their most accessible.  Their work as Amorphous Androgynous is also great.  Other artists in the area include Autechre (usually more challenging) and The Orb, who are very accessible and frankly brilliant: their first album (The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld) is superb chill-out music.  Get the original UK release which is about 50% longer than the US one.

Froese, Franke & Schmoelling (no, I didn't have to Google it) - that's the line-up of TD that I've seen live. I prefer the earlier Froese, Franke & Baumann period that gave us Phaedra, Rubycon and Ricochet. However, the line-ups with Joliffe and Schmoelling were great too.

If you are digging TD, have you checked out Kitaro?   Kitaro has some things (the vocal stuff mainly for me) that I would stear clear of but he has some real gems.  I would recommend: Silk Road, Full Moon Story, and his other earlier stuff.

Actually, if you dig Tangerine Dream, Ash Ra Tempel, Klaus Schulze and other 'Berlin school' synth music, you should definitely check out these guys:

http://www.radiomassacreinternational.com/

In the discography, click on any of the albums for a taste. You might want to pick one other than the one at the top of the page to start with, since their most recent studio album was a tribute to Syd Barrett, so it's a bit more rock oriented than their staple fare. But there are enough free samples on their site to decide if you like them.

So far I am mostly digging Tomita.  Right now I'm listening to his version of Holst's Mercury, The Winged Mesenger.  All those other names are going into a file and will be sorted through as time permits.

I should be concentrating more on the relaxing music but... well, this is why I have to listen to relaxing music: I won't just settle down.

What in the holy fuck is this lame Zhu Zhu pet shit? When toys get retarded is it a sign that the world itself is retarded?

Last time a toy fad was big enough that I noticed it was Tickle Me Fucking Elmo. Prior to that it was Tomafuckinggotchi.

Now I've noticed and I'm old enough to recognize that between *istan, health care, etc - the world is almost certainly retarded now.

And we have Zhu Zhu pets.

Fuck.

Sort of.  This has been going on for a long, long time.  So, yes, it means the world is retarded but this is not new.  Gracefully accept your position as someone in the upper-second-deviation of the intelligence bell-curve.

In other news, I noticed I have started putting spaces before my ! and ? on occasion.  I blame Ironwood.

The pics in the "picture a day" thread reminded me how much I miss getting a decent snowfall.   We've only gotten an inch, maybe an inch and a half in the last two days, and that's about what we average every year.   At least it was the quality packing stuff this year instead of the powder, so the kids finally got to build a snowman.   It's the son's first one and he'll be six on Christmas eve.

The East Neuk of Fife is probably the only bit of central Scotland that isn't going to be subject to heavy, drifting snow.

Wait, I just worked out that there just needs to be heavy snow somewhere between here and work 45 miles away.  I'm slow.
