Of course the most common penetration isn't via user passwords at all. It's through a system account that was created across your entire architecture by some consultant - installed on all your critical machines often with little oversight because it was a rushed job - backups, system monitoring, intrusion detction/security (oh the irony!), or an incorrectly configured system account (weblogic, apache, postfix, sendmail, jboss, oracle, mysql, postgres, ntp, radius) that sort of thing, accounts that are generally exempt from the password expiration rule and that are often made with 'temporary' or default passwords that people never get around to changing when they are put into production. SA, no password. Rock on.

I worked for a company for 5 years where i continuously pointed out that they did not have a security cert on their exchange web access.  I'm guessing there are hundreds of thousands of small to medium sized businesses out there that have the same issues.  It doesn't matter 1 bit what length your passwords are if you turn around and transmit them in the clear over teh intardnets.

I am using the BabyPlus prenatal education system on Ooschie. He won't stop thumping in my belly anyways, so he may as well get some learnin' in there. No rest for the fetus!

Just bend a set of cheap headphones so that you can wear them over your belly and blast that sprog with the sounds of DJ Otesfu. Works exactly the same.

Normally we never check humidity. Today? There wasn't a dry towel in sight, the floor wouldn't dry after being cleaned, glass walls were a mess.

I've been in this area for almost 25 years and I'm seeing walls sweating for the first time in my life.

I go into alot of peoples homes in southwest florida, some of these old people will leave their windows and doors open during the day in summer, I have seen condensation driping from their ceiling. Shoot we frequently have days over 70 percent humidity without raining, and hot, man does it get hot.

It rarely breaks 90 here (western Washington) and i rarely sweat just from ambient temperature. Today when i tried to go jogging I was instantly drenched. I don't really pay attention to humidity, but my misery has to be attributed to something so I blamed that.

Here, it's sunny, 18C (64F or so), wind a gentle (10MPH) SSW off the Firth of Forth so I can just smell a hint of the beach, humidity 50%, visibility good.  Sunshine and showers later.  Perfect for the vegetable patch.

The Pacific Northwest doesn't normally get that hot so most homes don't have AC.

The high temperature could easily tie or break the all-time record temperature of 100 degrees set July 20, 1994, at Sea-Tac, the weather service's Jay Albrecht said.

I was in Seattle that day.  Or more importantly that night, since even my suite at The Alexis Hotel, which is (or at least was, I dunno) a very up-market boutique hotel, didn't have aircon at the time.  They sent me up several fans and fitted them in front of open windows.

Hmm, have never stayed overnight in Seattle, but I know every hotel I have stayed at in Vancouver has had AC.

They are letting some staff at the Univeristy of Washington off at 3 pm today due to this. Of course, my department's server room's AC dies yesterday, right on cue.

Yesterday and today it's 105 in Portland. At least in Estacada you don't have urban heat island effect preventing nighttime cooldown. I don't think it dipped below 80 all night (usually drops down to the 50s at night in summer). Luckily, our house came with centralized aircon, but it's kind of wimpy - took 3 hours to get from 85 to 75 indoors. And there's no vent in our bedroom. We almost broke down and bought a window unit, but they were all sold out of all but the 10K BTU units that we'd have to get on a ladder and build a frame for. If I didn't have to work I'd just spend the week at the (noticeably cooler) coast.

Edit: according to the National Weather Service, yesterday's temp was 106. It broke a record of 101 set in 1998 (I remember that year too).

35% humidity wouldn't even make the crack of my ass sweat. We tend to get 70% humidity on the low side. It's quite funny to see the temperature in the high 70's with the real feel being in the 90's because of all the goddamn humidity.

I moved a year ago from the Rocky Mountains (7300 feet elevation) to the south.  The change from 15% humidity to 70+% has been an adjustment.  It sucks having to wait until dark to go for my runs.

Is that an altitude thing?  I went from growing up in a very high humidity environment (Florida) to living in a very low one (Southern California) for a few years and I had no trouble at all.  Both are sea level, though.

The best part was the first two weeks at sea level.  I could run 5 miles without breathing hard.  God, I miss that.

I don't think so... I think it's going from an arid mesa to a rice paddy.

I used to live in the desert and then travel to Florida a couple of times a year.  That difference of humidity was just killer, not just in the atmosphere but how everything feels to the touch.  Particularly paper products which you expect to feel dry but seem to be soggy and damp.

The biggest adjustment I had to make was realizing just how fast you can get dehydrated in very dry environments like that.  In high humidity, you sweat when you get hot.  In very low humidity, the moisture just gets sucked out of you and you don't even notice it because it evaporates so fast.  Of course, that keeps you much cooler (which is the whole point of sweating) but it's an adjustment to remember to drink lots of water even when you don't feel as hot.

Over and out.

The scary thing is as a kid I didn't even notice the heat and humidity until it hit the mid 100s.  Or that back when my parents grew up there was no AC.  Now, I'm quite thankful for its existance.

I hate AC.  Lots.  As soon as the temp dips below 80, I turn it off and open the windows.  With the 80 to 95 percent humidity around here lately though - not a chance.  The last couple of days I've had it on constantly.  The humidity just wipes me out sometimes.  I'm surprised I've not gone all moldy.
