Somehow I only just now learned that LCD TVs come in 52" and plasmas come in 50".  I have to start over with my TV research, I think, specifically if DLP is any good.

Are there windows in the room where the television will be placed?

If yes, then LCD is the way to go.

Now I remember why I don't want a DLP: lots of windows.  I want the 52" Aquos, but the problem is that I only have a 48" wide hole to put it in.  So, I need a LCD TV that is no more than 48" wide... or I can get really creative with the carpentry.  If a 50" LCD TV existed, I'd have one already.  Seriously, I'd never have thought that a 48" wide opening was too small six years ago.

Your television acumen and subscription to Consumer Reports fascinates and intrigues me, Oban.  So, can you explain those icons to me?  Do I want to cram the 48.75-inch Aquos into the cabinet or go with the I-only-read-one-lackluster-review Mitsubishi?  I have actually seen an Aquos and it looks good, so the real test will be finding the Mitsubishi.

Two weeks ago, on something of a whim, I decided that my wife should get me a DLP projector for my birthday.  It could just as well have been an LCD projector, but then I said to myself "hey, you've never had anything DLP before."  I got so obsessed (as I very often do with consumer electronics) that I could not wait until my actual birthday, and just went out an bought the fucker early.

To my surprise, if you choose to forego some of the less-than-necessary bells and whistles - and can live with something less than 1080p - you can easily get something decent for less than 1k.  I went into it with the expectation that it would be a fun novelty to hook up my PC or 360 to...I already have a (in my opinion) really nice Panasonic plasma, so I wasn't really trying to replace it.  To my surprise, I love the damn projector, and my plasma can officially bite my bag.  I don't think I will ever care about a real television again.  For way less than half the money, you can get an HD projector that throws very acceptable looking images up onto a screen.  A HUGE screen, like 100 inches, and that's just in my little office/den.  There is something special about playing GTA4 when the car you're jacking is nearly life-sized, even if it isn't quite as pixel perfect as my plasma (close enough, though).

Be careful which LCD you pick though. I know for sure the new Samsungs have wicked black levels, but they now have a glossier screen that has a reflection *almost* as bad as a Plasma.

I bought a Sony XBR984948-whatever LCD screen two months ago after looking at a few Samsung, Sharp and LG sets.  Settled on the Sony because it was the least glossy and had the features I wanted, but your mileage may vary.

Full red circle = great
Half red = good
White = VanguardSoH
Half black = SWG:NGE
Full Black = Auto Assualt

What you could do if you are really restricted by the 48" sizing is think in three dimensions.  Get an arm mount for the TV and bolt it in so that the TV itself hangs just outside your 48" hole.

I have already had that idea while looking at them in the store, since they all have wall mounts of some sort.  It would just require some carpentry and a foray into staining/finishing wood.  I will probably have to do the stain/finish anyway due to installing a shelf on which to put the center speaker which has rested atop my CRT for 5.5 years.  Anyway, I passed the idea by the wife about having the TV stick out into the room and her reply was basically "That's ghetto."  My second suggestion was to put it in there but angled; she didn't take me seriously at all.

No, the best solution here is that Mitsubishi.  I will find one in the wild so that I can take measurements.  I'm off work tomorrow so I might be able to go on a mystical quest.

I do remember when they washed up on the beach the one guy said something like He's going to get hypothermia, the only way we can save him is for us both to get naked and wrap ourselves up together in his sleeping bag!

Ah I remember that.  The anticipation as a 10 year old boy of maybe seeing some bra-covered boob.  And the disappointment of seeing a hairy old man in his underwear.   ACK!

This is true.  I usually add a slice of lemon to sugarless lemonade to cut the sweetness a bit.  Diet soda and other drinks tend to be too sweet.  I don't use anything but lemon and a bit of fresh mint in iced tea and it's loads more refreshing than soda or lemonade, I think.
