If ever there was a place where deed insurance sounded like a good idea, it's got to be that one, Sky.  Keep that in mind!

If you are stuck at the Hartsfield Atlanta Airport, at least there are some nice, for an airport, bars in terminals A, B and E.

However, if you are Mormon you are shit out of luck.  That airport sucks.

Any time I have a flight in or out of Atlanta I assume I will be there for at least an additional two hours.

Haha at first I thought Signe's avatar was just a HK that got worked over by her boyfriend, but she is Hello Zombie!

Also, I just started really using my USB turntable and am recording my old vinyl into mp3. I'll try to figure out how to share these. I have some weird old shit like Peggy Lee doing Spinning Wheel and a soul version of Jesus Christ Superstar that I think you all need to hear.

Why does every airline schedule short ass layovers when they know their flights are late so often, so you have to run from, say, gate B11 to gate B90 in 5 minutes?

I'm going to use this as a place to ask the lot of you a question:

When confronted with the choice of:

a) A great job in a lousy location or

b) A lousy job in a great location

Which would you choose?  I guess Neither would also be a good choice. Maybe this is my hint to find a new field/career.

Why do I ask?  I'm getting out of the research grind and looking to find a job in a place that doesn't expect me to bring in millions of dollars in grants while working 6-7 days a week.  After interviewing every week for 3 months, these were the choices that I was left with.  As far as locations, they are Arkansas and Hawaii respectively.  I can honestly say that I'm torn and thought some of you could give me a new way to think about this.

Thanks.

The reason that I'm even considering Arkansas is that I would be a forensic chemist working between a state university and the state crime lab.  The job seems like it could be fun, but I guess fun comes at a price.

I suppose if the great job in a lousy location had nice areas around it to live in, it would be okay.  You can work smack in the centre of London, a slow pain in the ass to get there, but go home to a nice flat on the Thames or a lovely house in Surrey with a huge garden or something.  (I'm not a big fan of London, actually.  Smelly.)

Making the trade off between a lower paying job in an academic atmosphere is also tempting for a lot of people I know.  You can live in a cramped studio in the meh area of Cambridge but have a fascinating circle of friends and peers, and a ton of interesting things to occupy your time. (most involving good wine)

I really do  Heart Heart Heart money, though.  So I'd have to try for the job that pays scads of money, has really, really short hours, tons of holiday time, and lets me either work from my mansion in Monaco.

I have a great job (as in enjoyable and rewarding, not lucrative) in a shitty location.

I've had shitty jobs in great locations.

I'll take the great job in the shitty location any day. I can always drive somewhere cool to do something, but not having money or energy and living in a great location is hell. Another thing to consider is what you find enjoyable. If you like hiking and nature, Arkansas could be better than Hawaii (I'd probably pick Arkansas as the better location).

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Personal preference. I don't like Hawaii's flora much. I've never understood people's fascination with it. Storms are a real bitch there, too.

Depends on the pay, making a shit ton of money in economically deflated Arkansas will get you much farther than making less money in inflated Hawaii.  How much time do you spend online, does it really matter where that happens?  If anything Arkansas would be a better choice for the online life:

#1 - Less lag on your internet connection.
#2 - You would be considered less crazy for spending a day online as opposed to going out to experience all Arkansas has to offer.  This would not be true in Hawaii.

On the flip side if you went to Hawaii, you would have a foot in the door when it came time to find a better job in Hawaii.

If you have no money Hawaii would suck, even normal everyday items cost a lot more there due to the remote location.  Of course sunsets are free, at least thats what you can tell yourself while wiping your ass with a palm leaf because TP ends up being $5.00 a roll.

Yeah, Hawaii is 55% more expensive as far as cost of living goes compared to where I live now.  They are essentially offering me the same salary that I currently make, so I'd be back to living the dorm-style life.  Arkansas offers less money, but it's 20% less expensive to live there.

For me the selling points of Arkansas are that it's a better position, it's 1h from Memphis (and the airport), and it's a lot closer to my daughter.  The daughter part is less important now that she's almost 15.  She's going to be spending most of her time with friends anyway.

Hawaii: Blah Blah
Arkansas: Blah Blah

Both of these options are pure shit.

Nebu, you'd go nuts in either place. Less in Hawaii, but you'd starve to death or live in a hovel. That should never be an option.

Wait, don't you currently live in Wyoming or some other out of the way shithole western plain state?

You'd probably get along just fine in Arkansas, and you'd likely have more of your own original teeth than your neighbors. Plus, living an hour from Memphis is double plus gud. Memphis is a fun place to VISIT... wouldn't want to live there.
