That's what you get for not having a state income tax.
This is very true. I have lived in both types of states and have found the tax load to be very similar.

Get to spend a few hours today arguing why my property taxes should be way the fuck lower and it completely hinges on how much the citizen board dislikes bullshit born out of laziness.
This is gonna be thrilling.
You live in Austin. Good luck. next stop is the actual tax assessor then the mayor i looked the old bag of shit directly in the face when he told me retail value was property tax value and it's a law and said "guess I have to change the law" When did you buy this house? What are they basing the value off of when it comes to the assessment? Are you current in homestead?

I bought it January 24th, 2017. I applied for homestead shortly after moving in, it was approved.
They are only basing it off of what I paid for the house. In fact, they worked backwards to make property + land = what I paid.
They're not taking into account the fact we're subsidizing some affordable housing units (cops, teachers, etc) - to the tune of over $100k. So we paid into that AND we're getting taxed on the back end? Not on my watch, you paper pushing motherfuckers.
They're not taking into account that by their math, we're paying double per square foot of land compared to everyone around us. (we're paying about $80 per square foot, everyone else is paying about $40).
They're also saying "yeah, sure, your house costs twice as much per square foot than ANY HOUSE WITHIN A 2 BLOCK RADIUS.
Basically, they don't give a fuck. When I'm done, they're gonna give a fuck.
They told me that it's law for first year "market value" to always what the first time home owner paid for the house, to which I said "Ok, what about someone who buys a property for $1 privately from say, a family member or business partner" - "Oh, well in that case we look at properties around them and adjust up. Basically, it's a law that is purely used for convenience. I don't abide by that fucking bureaucratic nonsense. They showed me their hand, I'm going to show them the nuts.

I do not understand how some companies manage to exist in 2018 without the ability to handle documents electronically. Not with me, but with their own offices and branches.
Specifically, the insurance industry, which apparently needs to overnight paperwork (which will take five days, because if you overnight it on Wednesday, it'll get mailed out late thursday to arrive Saturday, when they're closed, so Monday), so you can sign it and pick up the goddamn check.
Whereas, of course, they could have sent electronic documents to me directly or at least to a local branch (you know, like everyone else can) but that's apparently an impossible technical challenge. Of course when I point out that the five-day overnight delivery is kind of fucking my plans, built on a two-day overnight delivery (how foolish was I!) they point out they could direct deposit the check. A process which will take 48 hours to set up, and of course many banks will freeze the funds for 48 hours....

Are they losing you as a customer over this? If not, you answered your own question. Sadly, no. I can't really quit them without eating a giant rate increase. Plus, the local agents are super helpful and always have been. This is corporate dickery. OTOH, my credit union was on the ball -- they loaned me the full amount, and will refinance the vehicle whenever the insurance check comes, no charge.

Being from Cleveland area, this was a pretty big eye opener for me as well. Went down to Zainsville for one of my cousins little league games and thought I was in Mississippi.... then again I was 12 and never been anywhere out of Ohio back then.

Redneck is just rural -- in fact redneck is old slang for a farmer. Someone who works the fields until his neck is red from the sun. Lots of rural all over the country. In fact it may be more concentrated in the midwest now than the south.

Rednecks are concentrated all over America as long as you're more than one mile from the coast. Hell in some states they're on the coast.
Being a redneck in 2018 is just willfully stupid. It's like, passable if you're over 60 and just stuck as a redneck (fuck that age range for other reasons). But if you're like 40 or under it's quite literally inexcusable.

Oh yeah. But I was thinking redneck as a style of dress and appearance not behaviour, since I assumed that Hawkbit's kid wasn't seeing a lot of Confederate battle flags or hearing pro-Trump slogans being shouted out at a funeral.
Now I think about it, that assumption might very well not be warranted.
As for me, I'm with ya Schild on just not having any tolerance at all for the whole redneck thing anymore. Redneck religion, redneck politics, redneck "heritage," -- fuck it all. Keep it to yourself on the farm.
Okay, I still like BBQ and fried catfish, so it's not a total wash.

Well although my favorite BBQ place at the moment is a local black owned and operated joint, I cannot deny I have had some damn fine white boy BBQ in my day. I do admit that I don't choose to go out to those places much anymore, due to my aforementioned "had-enough" feelings about redneck culture.
Oh, and that includes redneck "humor" too, just to add to the list.

rednecks never did anything notably well like, there isn't a city in america where you can't get better food of the same variety the absolute best redneck cook makes in america, but we're still a generation or two away from that folksy fucking horseshit brand of legendary americana dying just to hasten the death though, fuck redneck culture and their shitty food

Not entirely. The term was also used for unionized coal miners in the 1910s to 1930s who wore a red Bandana as a sign of solidarity. But that's Socialism.

Sean Brock escaped redneck culture (if he was ever really even a part of it tbh). Dude is a tatted up (classy even) black frame wearing sober emo chef. He just happens to be southern. Southern != Redneck. Also, to add, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Yeah if you're going to make southern = redneck then Alton Brown is a redneck cook.
I was going to say that redneck is a southern subculture, but honestly I don't even think the majority of rednecks are in the South anymore. The Midwest seems full up, and if you've ever been to upstate New England you will find no shortage there either, and you can't get much further north than that unless you are Alaskan (also full of rednecks, even if they have no sun to speak of). And Ohio has been a hub of Klan activity for over a hundred years -- their governor had to call out the National Guard to control their rallies in the 20s (after the Tulsa riots, IIRC). And then there is northern California...
Basically, racist dipshits proud to be dumbass are not limited to south of the Mason-Dixon line, South Carolina politics not-with-standing...

I actually went to university and had a roommate from Thunder Bay. He wasn't noticeably ignorant or racist or stupid. He did like his weed though.

There's at least two types of redneck. There's redneck, used as a proud self-description and redneck, used as a slur. The Venn diagram does overlap, but not perfectly. I've seen Type One rednecks disdainfully looking down on Type II rednecks, for instance.

That Venn diagram's nonoverlapped area is human hair thin. Most people who call themselves rednecks, I also want to call rednecks.
