The battery pack on my gaming box's UPS died.  Didn't start a fire or destroy the UPS this time at least, but won't hold a charge or run the box under load.

At least a new pack is pretty cheap, but no gaming til it arrives kinda sucks.

That's strange - usually you can still run things if the UPS is passing power through.

Most UPS devices run their power through the battery at all times, constantly trickle charging to offset the power used. If the battery is faulty (and not just unable to keep a charge for long) it won’t work. The circuitry to keep power “uninterruptible” while switching between outputs is more complex and costly than it is worth in most cases.

Delivery guy didn’t bring a forklift, I had to offload and stack 3 tons of chicken feed by hand.

I'd trade the unloading for the treating bumblefoot I had to do with one of the ducks Sunday. None of the local vets want to do it, so they either refuse or overcharge to dissuade. I'll be glad when I pop them all onto the lake for the summer and get away.

I suppose its a bit like foot and mouth disease, which isn't actually that bad, just makes them lose weight as they don't eat as much and therefore the cattle become less valuable. But if cases crop up it creates mass panic.

The usual treatment for most folks is “buy a new bird” unless it’s a pet

They're my wife's pets. It started with a rescue and now is 6 poop monsters. Plus it's Baldy, who is a pretty well-behaved girl. Let me cut open her foot without freaking, and tolerates being rebandaged twice a day.

My sister's parrot is about 35 years old.  We're moving next month and have to board him for a day.  He had to have a physical and some tests to be allowed to board which happened yesterday.  He's never had that before.  The vet said he's the healthiest parrot he's ever seen.  I HAVE to die or disappear before he pops his pointy little clogs or I'm pretty sure my sister will leave him to me.  He hates me and screeches and screams whenever we're in the same room together.  I'm terrified to live.

My next door neighbor has yappy dogs, whose yapping I've been listening to for almost ten years now.  A couple of months ago, he sends me a text telling me that he's having trouble sleeping because the frog in my pond is making noise, and can I do something about it?

My sister used to have doves, too, but the sound they made in the morning was lovely and calming.  Like Rattran, she rescues everything.  Even Iguanas.  I'm a wee tiny bit worried that when we move, since the new place is bigger and has more land, we'll end up with all sorts of animals.  Well, worried and excited at the same time.  She does wildlife rehap and is partial to raccoons and bats.

I adore all you guys who rescue.

My first read of that I read it as, "Exorcism, epsom salts, etc..."

The thing is I didn't even think that odd at all.

We have a friend here who does the tough rescue stuff, and works with an exotic animal education place. So anything too crazy goes to her. She's currently raising a litter of caracals, and a wallaby.

The maximum throughput of the Bitcoin blockchain is - at absolute maximum - 7 transactions per second.

Globally.

I'd like to see any retailer accept that kind of bottleneck.

The sad thing being blockchain has some potential, limited uses in terms of authentication. It's a technology that really needs some real world usage and someone to come up with a system that can use it, for things like certifying CVs or degrees it's potentially great (anyone who has dealt with Apostilles and other antiquated systems of checking document authenticity, it would be a godsend) but it's become this thing which is going to totally replace all centralised insitutions pushed by techbro engineers who see technologies not human systems and charlatans selling smoke.

It's really an infuriating topic, I've got a few acquaintances who are super into it and seem to think arguing the flaws in their proposed systems equates to misunderstanding the technology itself.
