Shitballs I am fucking tired, thank God the semester is over.  Students may procrastinate, but at least they know they’re slacking.  I swear the faculty and and especially the administration are just as bad, but they feel entitled about it (I am University staff, in case it wasn’t obvious from the bitching)

That is all, pardon me while I retire to the basement bar for alcohol consumption in mass quantities.

I'm not saying y'all aren't busy, Nebu (sorry).  It's just that everyone has that one project/event/whatever they've left for the end of the semester, and when they ALL eventually happen at the same time we get asked for support for them all.   We wind up working 6am-10pm 6 to 7 days a week for the last month trying to accommodate everything that drops.

Where the entitlement really comes in is when we dare to say "no" to one of these things due to lack of personnel & equipment to Mr/Mrs/?? Coach/Administrator/etc (again Neb I'm not picking on you or Khaldun or any other faculty on the board--you've certainly never done this to me personally)

Well, I wish I had more resources, but we're busy paying many of these high-ranking individuals more than my entire departmental budget for the year  swamp poop  I wish that were an exaggeration, but it's not.  The teaching professors certainly don't get that kind of money--they're still substantially underpaid relative to their peer group--but hoo boy is there some deadweight at the top.

At least everything is quiet for a couple months until end of July/start of August when everyone remembers they have classes to start in a couple weeks and the cycle repeats...

Edit for some hungover typing fix-ification  Ohhhhh, I see.

I understand, Poly.  Seems states keep cutting education budgets, state politicians tell us we can't raise tuition, and all that happens is that universities hire more worthless administrators.  The university I work at has had its enrollment double while my department remains the same number of faculty.  We're all doing more and consider ourselves lucky if we get a 1% COL raise every 3 years.

Hang in there.

You know, re: above, the one thing that surprises me all the time about tenured faculty is that a lot of them keep working their asses off all the way to the end of their careers despite the fact that they're essentially invulnerable and can't be ordered about at all. And they act pretty well most of the time. Professionalization is a hell of a drug.

But on the other hand, it only takes a few people who exploit the system and become spectacular deadweight and/or psychopaths to make you resent the whole thing. I mean, I guess it's not that different in a workplace where people can be fired at will--if the deadweight/psycho is the person in charge of everyone else, they're also invulnerable. But it is really hard at times to know that not only can someone not be fired, they can't even be told to stop doing something unless it's sexual harassment. So if I have a colleague who dumps shit on staff at the last minute or is unpleasant to them, I often can't do a damn thing about it even if the org chart says I'm allegedly that person's supervisor or manager. All the responsibility and none of the power.

I've watched 5 tenured colleagues lose their jobs (asked to resign) in the last 10 years.  Tenure doesn't make you as invulnerable as you think, especially now that most institutions have implemented post-tenure review systems.

Well, at a really big place, there's going to be a few of those, but it's still something of a long tail. And a lot of places still do not have post-tenure review--in some cases they don't need it because they've essentially eliminated tenure anyway by hiring adjuncts for 75% of the teaching.

I would like to think that most of these people have a real passion for what they do.  Not that I haven't seen some giant POS tenured slugs, but most of these people seem to really love their jobs.

In the sciences and engineering, they do.  If they didn't love their personal research, they'd go into the private sector and make twice as much doing something some company finds important.

I think it's true all around. Mostly folks are really passionate about it. Even some of the slugs once were, they just burned out. I mean, you don't make it through 5-8 years of apprenticeship aka grad school and postdoc, plus one of the worst job markets imaginable where you have almost no choice about where you end up living, if you're looking for a payout on easy street.

One of my wife's students is a major, major MtG fan. Since school is effectively over (they're seniors, everything done), she finally brought in my old Magic cards because he's been dying to see them ever since he got told "Oh, my husband played back in the mid-90s". (I forget the name. 93-95ish).

She said it was a truly heartwearming geek out to watch. He and a friend took a pair of old decks I still had together and played what they called "retro magic" which made me feel old. (And couldn't get over the stupidity of having magic cards that did nothing but block a single color. What could possibly be the use, unless you lucked out and faced someone playing only that color?).

Apparently he really enjoyed playing a 20 year old blue-white denial deck.

I really should sell them, but...nostalgia.

Thought of my day:

There is nothing more unnerving than working in a quiet office setting and having the air circulation systems switch off.

Something comforting about the low level background noise of the HVAC unit that gets completely lost when they get shut off.

I have a theory that the sudden absence of background noise triggers an automatic stress response because when the birds suddenly go quiet it might mean they just saw something sneaking up behind you.

Similarly, I have a frog in my backyard pond this spring and find his background noise to be a very soothing "EVERYTHING IS OKAY" alarm.

The librarian who recently retired always used to get anxious when I didn't have anything on my desk with active cooling. Ever since we moved to flat panels and passively cooled pcs, the office gets creepy quiet. When she was having a bad day, I'd plug in an old device to help her relax (I never told her I did that, heh).

I dislike accountants usually. As a rule most of them have all the social problems of engineers without the sense of humor.

I have one accounting friend and he's the exception to the rule. I get along with finance people mostly. Different skill set, more personable, and a lot more bullshitting.
