Guys with attitudes like that should always be ready for random nut shots on the street.

Not much has changed in 10 years other than two big position changes and one house move. Shifting out of doing architecture to more tech and program support. More money and I'm happier for it. Well, the kids are 10 years older, too, but personalities have remained the same.

My life is one long series of suburban events occurring over and over. I'm good with that as I know people would kill for the sort of stability I've grown accustomed to and jaded by.

I did the slow awkward transition between Corpnews and F13 as well.  Oddly enough, I just pondered out loud in Discord if anybody knew what happened to Boogeleboo.   awesome, for real

September of 2006, I was 2 months into my year long stay in Japan as a college exchange student.  With all the hilarious shit that entails.

If I remember correctly, I was banned from Corpnews (or was it Waterthread?) in a supremely douchey way and was surprised at how relatively sane and mature (cough, I know) f13 was.

I thought it was Waterthread that this was born out of.  I found out about Waterthread from LumtheMad during my EQ/Med school days.

He'd wandered off the internet to do his US Mail employee job. If you missed the, "Pika calls Boog's house" thread you missed a real hoot. Basically he said, "I'm alive, go the fuck away and don't call me again" then fucked off. I imagine he's still doing the same route and will for another 10-15 years or so when he'll be eligible for retirement.

Corpnews only had a userbase because there was a faction of waterthread that thought:

1. I was a punk
2. I was too new
and
3. I'd kill waterthread

Whoops.

Also, I had lunch with Joe a week ago.

Oh no, I totally remember that thread (epic).  But I also thought he started posting again a little after that.  Then I slowly fucked off to F13, and never saw what became of all that.

Also, only now that Schild mentions Joe handing off the torch do I remember that F13 was a direct break from waterthread.  My traditional memory of migration was LtM, SND, thatonesitewithbrightcolorsicantrememberthenameofnow, waterthread, corpnews, f13.  Getting old.  I'll go off and die happy in Laos now I think.

Now that's descriptive.

I played around a bit at CorpNews and F13 before finally settling over here after Waterthread washed away.  I never was part of LtM or SND though.  Did spend some time on Player2Player for a bit, but the owner there was batshit and that wasn't much of a loss.

Any more I find it hard to just join a forum and jump into the community like I used to.  Either I'm getting too picky about who I want to talk to online or I'm getting too old.  Probably both.

It wasn't quite Joe handing it off to me. Joe wanted to do things, he just didn't want to deal with - at the time - assholes. What became "the corpnews guys" had gotten a little up his craw, and I simply gave him a solution involving moving the entire thing to an outside party (me).

Basically, the natives were getting restless, and killing them was easier than anything else.

It's not a good story. Technically, Waterthread didn't die, it was murdered.

No one could have forseen Lum and his group becoming some sort of bizarre safespace hugbox 15 years later though (where things stand currently).

Thank you Rhyssa!  Player2Player was the bright colored website I was referring to.  Was driving my vodka addled brain crazy.

And yeah, the whole hugbox thing is really confusing.  But heyo, still seems like a descent group.

I didn't even realize this thread is ten years old now.  Goddamn.  I guess that was back when we were still laughing at Mahrin for telling us to bury the gold.   awesome, for real  That only comes to mind because late 2007 was when the economy went to shit enough that I decided I could finally afford to dig up my gold and buy a house in SF, but in 2006 the bubble would have still been inflating.

I also came to F13 via the Waterthread route; I had found Waterthread during the bitter end of my days in SWG (circa 2004 I guess) because a friend had linked me to a front page SWG rant on Waterthread, and it resonated enough that I started to follow the rest of the site.   Heart

Bury the gold was a bit later than this thread (though not by much) as I was around when he started that thing.

I have no idea what the rest of you guys are talking about as I was blissfully not a member of any of those places. I only ended up here because of the "McQuaid is a giant douche" front page article about Sigil.  why so serious?

It was 2007 when I started saying "The market is all fucked up, there's a shitstorm coming." it was June 2008 when I hit the panic button and started screaming the bottom was going to fall out soonish.

I don't remember the exact sequence by which I arrived at f13, I went to pretty much all of the post-LtM sites. Which one was it where the guy running it ran a donation drive, then kept the money and told everyone to fuck off?

Ha!

That was Slow News Day.

I somehow managed to skip P2P almost entirely and I have no idea how that happened. I know I was there once or twice and found waterthread very early on. I started at LtM back when Lum, Arcadian and the others who I forget were regular writers. It was shortly after the "Japanese girl who was cosplaying in bathing suits" bit that got a bunch of feminists really upset. I'm pretty sure it was even a gimmick account, which made it even funnier once I found the site the other websites were bitching about (LTM).

Which makes the turn into a hugbox even more bizarre for me. All I can do is blame his last 15 years in Austin for it.

Oh no, I totally remember that thread (epic).  But I also thought he started posting again a little after that.  Then I slowly fucked off to F13, and never saw what became of all that.

He did for a bit, but the site was so slow in post churn it seemed like longer. I think he only hung around for a month or two, tops, with only a handful of posts. I'm curious who keeps paying hosting on corpnews.com because it's still up there but hasn't been updated in 4 years. It certainly can't be worth the con passes they used to scam it off for.

I missed all the LtM, Waterthread, etc. stuff and just wandered here from reading HRose's blog; I found that because he was accurately leaking WoW expansion spoilers. Can't be arsed to find my first post in here; even with google I'm not having a lot of luck, although I do see a post by Cyrrex saying I was our 2000th member so that's cool.

IIRC he was baited back to help drive off those poor shlubs that had migrated over from Penny-Arcade (invited by Rasputin), but it was clear his heart just wasn't in it. I think he only made the effort because he was truly touched by the "Mike from the Internet called" thing.

My first post on f13 was raving about how awesome Auto Assault was going to be.  Ohhhhh, I see.

In my defense, the game they showed at E3 that year was awesome. The City of Heroes in cars they actually shipped was completely different.

Ah geez... reminiscing about the good old days... I was playing UO in late 1998 & reading Stratics of all things and got linked to Lum's "rant" site (in early 1999 back when he & Dr Twister used to go back and forth). Then followed them all from one to another for the next 18 years... fuck I'm old now. I find it amusing all the different twists and turns it's taken over the years, I think Sky is the only one from those days who still posts regularly her.

And I'm totally with Rhyssa, jumping into communities is not something I really do much of anymore. Just too much hassle!

I'm nearly that old, but I think it was 2000 when I came to LtM, not 1999. Fuck, it might have been '99, but I only recall hearing other folks talk about DrT.

I came from LtM because I was reading a lot about MMO design/gameplay (I ran a few MUDs). Looks like my first post was back in 2004. Damn that was forever ago. And I'm not sure I even like MMOs anymore.
