1000 pages of this useless shit. Love you guys.  Heart

Plus, yeah, credit card companies suck. Has contactless payment started to get big in the US yet? It's taken off here in a big way recently and I have to say I love it, but I'm waiting for the scores of claims from people who do things like travel on public transport and get their cards skimmed in a busy train to start up.

It's definitely less than 100% but you guys do represent the majority here.  It's what makes it nigh impossible to relate to you at times. Certainly explains yalls lack of empathy for others though.

I feel like this sometimes, but I on the whole I think the empathy is about normal for people on here, not different to the general population.

We've had it for ages here in Australia, no issues I'm aware of to date.

Contactless payment? I've never even heard of that; we did just start getting that Chip thing recently but it seems like more of a hassle than just swiping.

Contactless payment has been around in the US for a while.

It was pushed for a little bit about 10-15 years ago then it died down until ApplePay came along and really sped up the implementations. It is still hard to find everywhere and most cards in the US that used to have it no longer do. There was not a huge push, and there was a backlash about how it was pretty simple to skim numbers from people walking by that gave it a bad rap. It is why RFID blocking wallets became so popular a few years ago.

Is contactless supposed to be more secure in some way. I'd just as soon stick with the swipe or chip readers.

You should probably think about another option than using that one card for everything.
I have a credit card with a $500 limit that I keep just for that kind of event (seems like it happens about every 4-5th time I order from China). I buy a game on Steam or a book on Kindle every 6 months or so just to keep the account open.

--Dave
I'm thinking about readjusting my setup. The problem is my credit card (for actual purchases I want to finance for a month or two) is via the same credit union and the same issuing company (Visa) and they tend to lock that one too.

I'm thinking about just getting a MC from another bank and using that.

As to my family personal drama: The missing spouse has been found, kid alive, Jerry Springer situation confirmed. ("Ran off to start new life, with the chosen kid, and a new love!." New love being former roommate and friend of, of course, the left-behind spouse. Thankfully I know both a good therapist (for the left behind kid and the left behind spouse) and a rather excellent family lawyer. Not only has a solid track record, but is forthright about the difference between "What the law says" and "What happens in practice, with the judges here". No sugarcoating, no promising anything more than he can deliver. Just a solid "Look, with the judges here and your situation, X is the best you can do, but odds are pretty heavy you get Y instead."

I hadn't started dating my fiancee yet and lived in a ghetto apartment. Now I've owned a house for 8 years and been engaged for 9 years  why so serious?

I mean...there was no minecraft back then. I didn't even have a flip phone! The Dark Ages!

On credit cards: I find having a strategy works. I use an amazon card as a primary for the sweet free Amazon loots, a balance transfer card that I can shunt the rare overages into (it carries a 0% balance for 1yr on transfers) and a backup card with a low rate and no frills for emergencies. I abused the shit out of the balance transfer card a few years back when I was having budget issues, it was nice to work my way out of debt without paying for it.

I came into the fray late, but when this thread was started, I was still living on Miami Beach. Since then I have lived in 4 different states and lived with 2 different girlfriends. Older I get the longer the days are and the shorter the years get.

So yeah, pretty much went the other way on most of that now.

Yes though it's a lot easier for some of us. You can try something like this in Google to narrow things down:
