I don't know why Haemish would expect otherwise. Mississippi is basically one of the actual shittiest places on the planet. It's like moving to the Middle East and plopping down some money on land in the Gaza Strip. Holy shit, insane HOA politics.

So, one year ago I was drafted to be the Treasurer, because the old guy was 70 and I'm an accountant.  Fine, whatever.  The President is my neighbor.  The President is a Crazy Old Lady.  Shit has been crazy and everyone is unhappy with the President and the Board, but they love me because I treat everyone like they are people.

At the second Special Meeting that has been called in the last six months trying to get rid of the President, with the mutineers "organizing" (shitty organization) and I'm fed up with the whole thing and have said I'm going to resign to a few owners.  The coup is a clusterfuck, with the President pulling out a bunch of pocket proxies she got from people not there.  Looks like this is going to be another giant ball of stupid.

I lose my temper, make a short speech, then invalidate the proxies because they don't match the motion on the table.  Old Board, minus me, is out.  The mutineers give me a standing ovation.  I resign.  New Officers voted in.  Fine, but no one will run for fucking Treasurer.  So I'm stuck being the interim Treasurer and agreeing to be the unpaid bookkeeper as long as all my signing authority goes away and I'm off the Board.

And now I'm stuck living next to a paranoid, vindictive Crazy Old Lady because the people running the coup were too god damn incompetent to organize a palace coup and everyone else was too chicken to get the Crazy Old Lady mad at them.  And I still get to do all the accounting work for free!

FUCK.  At least I won't have to be on the Board and I won't be able to sign anything.

The only thing crazier than sitting on an HOA board voluntarily is running in local politics.  So at least you still have that.

Bought a bunch of cat6 to hardwire my tv/ps3. Unfortuantely, my 90 year old house actually has insulation (surprise #1) and the crawlspace ceiling I need to run it through was also insulated. Which means the cable has to be run through an L shaped area (surprise #2) about 3'x2', also through blown insulation. FUUUUUUUUuuuuuuu Luckily I'm only one 1/2" hole in the lath and plaster at this point.

I'm not even sure if I can get fish tape to bend through that L.

Currently considering powerline adapters, but it being a 90 year old house with terrible electrical, I have no idea what that will actually do.

Is that new insulation?  Old insulation could mean asbestos.

It looks like fiberglass fill. I can't be 100% sure though. Someone made an arbitrary "6/91" mark on one of the boards covering the ceiling of the crawlspace. I'm hoping that's date of install, which should put the house out of the period of time vermiculite was being used.

I expect that it will work or not, so just buy from a place with a suitable return policy.  I would not expect it to cause a fire, if that's what you mean.

As in dangerous and we're replacing in the next year along with a major home reno.

The panel is too small for the home and they've got shit double tapped in at least a few slots. The house has knob and tube that may or may not be hot, working shielded in some spots and romex in others. West Seattle until ~10 years ago was very blue collar, where the port workers lived. I suspect there was a lot of 'my electrical buddy' work done over the life of the house before we purchased.

Yeah I wouldn't fuck with pushing any additional current through in the form of any signal if it's knob-and-tube AND double-tapped.

Hell, I'd be paranoid to the point of taking a home loan to get it fixed right now not next year.

Oh, and any missing money?  Gonna get ugly, good luck.

I pointed out that the proxies didn't match the motion on the table (since she didn't go out and get general proxies giving her the missing owners full voting powers... she got advanced votes on what she thought the motion would be), and she agreed.

I also pointed out at the meeting she wasn't getting Board votes on anything (she would just do it, and announce to the Board afterwards) after the first time a vote failed at a meeting, and that she was selectively editing Board Minutes and specifically telling the Secretary not to write things down (usually bad-mouthing other unit owners).

Also, my books are impeccable.  The only squirrelly thing is that she hired a contractor to do work in the basement underneath her unit specifically, paid by the HOA, and avoiding a Board vote and our entire bid process.  All of our floors are a bit wonky since the building is a converted 19th century brick school, but the Association managed to pay to have hers fixed with a "oh, we'll do it piece-meal as we get money".

Basically, she could play that game but she has more to lose.  She's going to be moving, I think.  I'm also off the Board, so you can't even make the argument I did it for personal gain because I'm noping the fuck out.

The kicker?  My next item is to call the Power of Attorney for my other neighbor... his dementia has creeped into the land of "probably needs to be in assisted living".

HOA stuff is crazy.  The husband was on the board when we were in our condo and for a 52 unit place, there was waaaaay too much politics going on.

New topic - anyone know anything about coax?  We currently have satellite and DSL in the house.  Lately, the DSL just isn't cutting it any more so we're thinking about getting Uverse (as long as they let us keep our email addresses from 2 owners ago) but I have no clue how that would even work if we already have something using the coax in the house.  And getting rid of our DTV is not an option.

I'd love to update finally (DSL was all that was available when we moved here in 2001) but don't know if that's even possible.

Uverse comes with a wireless router.  It comes to the house via phone line, you should be fine.

Seriously?  If it's just renamed DSL, then that's bullshit.  Although, maybe a modem update might help.  We're still using the original one from when we got service installed.  One thing we do want to do is get the service off our second phone line and onto the main landline, so we can quite paying for an extra line.

It varies by location. A handful of places get fiber to the home, most places get "fiber to the node" (the central distribution location in the neighborhood and from there it's over twisted pair) and some just get twisted pair from the Central Office (effectively renamed DSL).

AT&T's website will tell you what packages they offer at your address, if they don't go above 6Mb down, it is DSL.

I just got this, I'm 500ft from the box and get pretty fast speeds (faster than Comcast). It's great & cheaper than Comcast - who I just told to eat a bag of dicks.

Inside the house, Uverse will use coax to go from the main DVR to the remote ones.  I repurposed the coax from DirecTV into Uverse runs; it's just cable.  Even better, the Uverse boxes all have RJ-54 ports on them so I can plug things into it and be wired to the gateway.
