I just finished my final college assignment.

Jesus, let there be bourbon.

Savor this moment.  As bad as college is, working is 100x worse.

However, I have had far too many experiences in my town with crazies to want to subject my daughter (even now at 16) to them. When she was 12, she had 3 (!) bad experiences in 6 months while walking our dog down our street. That made her never want to go walk the dog alone again.
Sounds like Santa Cruz...

I dunno what it is in this part of suburbia that there aren't sidewalks, but there honestly aren't along a number of roads. On our street, not such a big deal--traffic is ok. But right around the corner is a road that tons of people use to cut through between two major thoroughfares (and get access to a highway as well) and it's terrifying to cross on foot. I walk to work sometimes but if I can't finish up before dark I sometimes call my wife for a ride because walking back on a hilly shoulder while cars whizz past on road that have posted 25mph but average speeds of 45-55 mph is just a bit too much in the dark. I actually really wouldn't want my daughter walking or biking along those routes alone just because they're so unfavorable to both.

I worked the entire time, now to shift paths.

And no, I won't be going back. Ever. I'm 39 now, any more school might put me in an early grave.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

The thing is our parents were ignorant and we're hyper-aware of ONLY the dangers.

I dunno. The first time I heard the "bad things have always happened, we just hear about it more today" phrase was from my folks back in the 60s/70s. Believe it or not, we had things like TV and newspapers and stuff to spread every tragedy world wide, just like today.

I think things just go in cycles. A permissive generation breeds a restrictive generation. And then around the other way again.

And for what it is worth, I was allowed to pretty much run wild too...

I've lived in one neighborhood that had sidewalks in my entire life. Most of the big suburban developments I lived in did not have them at all.  Sidewalks take up yard space.

Plus, as you get into further out suburbs (or towns that the suburbs have grown to encompass), a lot of those don't have sidewalks either.  Having a sidewalk usually involves having a "finished" street with curbs and such.  My street edge just ends at the grass and that's how quite a few of the streets in the area are.

College was fun, but working has a lot less stress than college to me. There's no grades here, I have the income to do whatever the hell I want on weekends, and I don't have to spend my personal time studying. I hate studying.

When I put the workday down, I'm done. That couldn't be said about college. There was always pressure deadlines related to making grades. Life isn't like that. You have deadlines but you don't have somebody grading you on everything you do.

Actually I think increasingly work is like that in many professions--the work follows you home, you're constantly evaluated and measured, etc. Which doesn't mean that's a good thing but the distinctions are eroding in some contexts.

I loved studying and learning stuff.  Showing up for class was my downfall.  So many better things to do than sit in a room full of Poindexters and Narcoleptics.

Especially when you're young.  Srsly.

What, pray tell, is a Poindexter? Other than, like, a name.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Thanks for the clarification. And no, I'm no Poindexter. Not nearly smart enough :P

If that's a holiday, it ain't one I get off of work. But yes, we are fucking idiots.

Also, I wish Patreon was hipster welfare. The only dipshit that bothered to try to give me money on Patreon was just one of this shitheads that pledge and then message you with a "I pledged, let's share pledges" like this was 2008 and it was #FollowFriday.

Why is the day after Thanksgiving a holiday?  Is it because people get too fat to fit into their suits and uniforms or whatever?  I have added Confederate Memorial Day to my list of holidays.  I mean, why not?

Because southerners can't admit that they want off for Black Friday.

It's a day off because nobody wants to work the day after a Thursday holiday, and you usually have to go out of town to meet family anyway.

Having black Friday off is one of the reasons Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love the preparation and the eating and the football, and I love that all the family commitments are all done on the first day. Then I get 3 days of laying around playing video games and watching sports.

We float it. Some years I go for the long weekend, some I take a three day on another weekend. It's a nice day to work because it's pretty quiet and most people are out.

Despite not liking horror films I saw Welp (Beligian production) and now feeling freaked out/unwell. How dumb.

On the plus side, the director was there and answered audience questions, so it was a somewhat special evening.

Edit: I would recommend the film though if one enjoys the genre.
