Seattle's a little different. We like our shit right in the middle of our great parts. We've affectionately named our alleys near work as "Piss Alley" and "Needle Alley". Those are preferable to the patchouli and weed smells from the regular streets.

San Francisco has the same issue with the Tenderloin. Walk two blocks in the wrong direction from Union Square, where a lot of the upscale shops and hotels are located, and you'll end up in the worst neighborhood in SF.

I still don't understand how that still exist.  The land it sits on has to be some of the most valuable in the entire US.  With the amount of money flowing into SF, I can't believe it hasn't been gentrified the hell out of existence yet.  If SOMA can be turned from ghetto into a high end area in less than a decade, how is the tenderloin not nuked yet....

I don't think SOMA had low-cost housing, SRO buildings, etc, at least not the part that got nuked (head down to 6th St and it's a different story).  It was more industrial than residential.  I'm not sure exactly how ownership of those buildings (like the one my dad's been living in since 1986ish, hence that area being a big part of my childhood) works but I suspect there are strong legal obstacles to private developers gobbling them up.

You can see the gentrification creeping in around the edges, though.  Like weeds through a sidewalk.

I suspect if you didn't grow up with classic Star Trek, it's not something you can get into. You gotta watch it through nostalgia colored glasses, because frankly TV in the 70s and 80s and most of the 90s was just shit. Even the GOOD stuff was just shit, compared to the standards of TV over the last decade or so. I'm thrilled with Netflix and Amazon producing their own shoes, because a lot of good TV is slow to start, and seeing shows that have the actual chance to build characters, stories, and evolve rather than getting shit-canned because they didn't beat out some 7-year old sitcom on another station is pretty fucking nice.

I can think of a couple of dead shows I wish had aired on Netflix now, instead of other stations then. (Fox, for instance.)

Still, 70s TV isn't as bad as the prequels. Jesus, that's just wrong.

My brother's results on are -- it's cancer, but not lung cancer. Hodgkin's lymphoma -- which is apparently pretty high up the "If you have to get cancer, get this one" list. 5 year rates are insanely high (like 85% across all patients). Even the stage IV rates are high (65%). I think having stage IV HL is only slightly worse than having stage I lung cancer. Barely.

That big mass in his lung isn't in his lung. It's a tumor in his lymph nodes in his upper chest, which has displaced/compressed/overlapped his right lung. That's why he can't breath. The doc was very confidant that it wasn't in his lung at all (it's confined to that lymph node).

However, he's got to get a PET scan and a bone marrow biopsy (scheduled for 'as soon as the insurance okays it' so either Friday or Monday) to see if it started in his chest, or started somewhere else and spread. By default he's getting radiation (targeted at his chest to kill the big tumor fast) and a chemo package, so long months ahead. If it's spread, I think they just give him stronger chemo drugs and maybe radiation at any other site.

Still, shit. 85% for all cases? 65% or better for Stage IV? Fucking beats the hell out of most cancers.

Doctor says he'll actually feel better once the treatment starts, because he'll be able to breathe properly, sleep without coughs waking him up every 20 minutes, and get his O2 levels up without working his heart into a tizzy.

But in any case: Fuck cancer. Stupid body. Poorly designed POS.

Holy shit.  I'm sorry to hear it's the big C, but at least it sounds like it should be treatable.  Hoping it goes well.

Oh come on, it's not all bad - they've actually got some pretty interesting restaurants, and even really nice places are super cheap in comparison to other places I've been.

For instance, we went here for Valentine's (http://www.barcelonawinebar.com/atlanta.htm) and it was super packed...but once we got in, the food was great. And I think I only dropped $100, which I consider a bargain for something like that.

I'm going to have to delurk and disagree with that. Hell, knowing the characters and stories of the original Star Trek is one of the things I *can* talk to twentysomethings about. And while I agree with you for praising Netflix for taking the chance on original series, I think their greater service has been to make old stuff so readily available to those born generations later.

It was the seventies. Shit happened. I was a little young at the time, but that's the gist I got. it was the seventies, stuff got weird.  Probably because of all the acid.

Voyager's..campy, I guess. I'm fine with it, but only by not really thinking about characterization or plot or anything. But then I happily watched Eureka, SG-1, and a dozen other shows that were basically light sci-fi that was half technobabble and half people doing people shit while weird science happened.

Although I've always believed that the explanation for Voyager was basically Neelix constantly cooking with mind-altering 'spices'. It explains so much. Like the time someone turned into a newt.

Yes, I've spent a lot of time in New England so I know what a lobster roll is.  The good ones have butter.  Putting mayo on lobster is for people who don't like lobster.
