Photoshop has some nice tools, but a lot of them are for very specific workflows so learning when not to use them is as important as when to use them. Then it's all about the subtlety and craft, over-burnishing or trying to use an incorrect color photo to paste into another, not clone-stamping the same 50x50 pixel area all over a 2100x1500 area you're wiping-out, etc.

You can get a good basic understanding of what they do from Adobe's video library.  http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop.html

All of the basics will carry over into GIMP, they might work differently but they'll be there.

Just scheduled my final course to graduate.  Class doesn't start until January, but I'm so excited to be finished with school I can't help it.

I wish we had someone here that worked for Hulu.

What a piece of shit service that became. I don't even mind the ads. It's the fucking streaming. Christ on a stick it's awful.

Is that Hulu or is that the ISPs strangling the bandwidth on Hulu to extort money out of them?

Over and out.

I highly doubt it's ISPs. Hulu doesn't even swing in the same league as Netflix. Also, TWC in Austin has never throttled anyone.

You are right, it's not nearly as useful as the name makes it sound. This isn't useful either, but it's interesting (if you like this kinda thing): http://tech.hulu.com/blog/tag/cdn/

Regardless, I dumped Hulu. They fucking blow.

It'd be one thing if it were inconsistently shitty or could downthrottle quality efficiently. But no, the only thing that ever worked right were the commercials. Sutter-free high-def commercials. What a shit service.

Weirdly warm weather here in Georgia for the next week, then things take a turn towards normal November weather with 60s and 40s as highs and lows.

Was 80 in Illinois yesterday, think the high is going to be around 60 today.

Hulu was nice before Netflix had so many quality TV shows and they started making everything decent require Hulu Plus.  I used to watch a lot of TV on Hulu when it first came out.

Started updating a spreadsheet with new NIC/VLAN layouts and decided that my head is way too cottony to trust with this today.  Almost done with this sickness, though.  Until my head clears, I suppose I need to find something to do.

I also watched a bit of Hulu early on. I'm biased toward Prime as my baseline, as I have it for the shipping anyway. I had a free month of Netflix and the experience was mostly good, I missed it when it lapsed. Had a free week of Hulu Plus and cancelled it after a day.

They all have pretty crappy selection.

Last night I figured out what I dislike about streaming. It makes guilty stuff so much more guilty. When I paint, I like to put on some garbage tv or movies in the background. But I can just turn the tv on and leave it or flip to something not completely wretched pretty quickly.

With streaming, I have to search for and select the shitty garbage.

Netflix for some reason just does not want to let me watch Big Trouble in Little China, every time I try to watch it over the last couple years my stream bogs down or my Roku/BluRay player crashes (or both.)

Why does Netflix hate Jack Burton?

Got fired today for reasons that are more institutional than they are to do with my performance. I'm not super upset over it as I was jonesing to get out of Madrid anyway but I'd have preferred to do it on my terms.

Try Amazon Prime if you have it, I watched it just fine there recently.

Holy shit. Why have I never had a ribbon mic before?

I've always just pushed vocals (such as mine are) through the Shure SM58, the mic I've used for live vocals forever. Decided to make my recording setup a little nicer and snagged a cheapo $90 MXL R144 to do vocals and my guitar, ambient room noise, etc. Holy shitballs was that a nice buy. I mean, it's not great but it is the appropriate kind of mic for not a lot of scratch. I will probably buy a second at some point as now my SM57 sounds weak on my classical guitar!

While I was playing through lunch and enjoying the tone and clarity of the mic (compared to the SM mics), I paused for a sec to tweak a couple knobs and heard my cat coming through the mic! Noice.

Ribbon mics rock.

Are they dynamic or condensers? (The ribbons not the Shures)

Neither, ribbons (aka velocity mics) are another category.

If I remember correctly, they're also very fragile.  Treat it well!

E: In case anyone else is looking for cheap, high-quality mics, Blue makes some nice USB condensor microphones for less than $150.

I have a Blue Snowball ($50).  I'm sure there are much better mics out there but it's easily ten times better than the shitty $20 mic it replaced so I'm very happy with it.

Sucks, but hope you can find something better! Madrid is lame anyways (so I hear). How about Poland? I hear they are gang busters for games these days.

I have the Blue Yeti ($120) and it's great; all I use it for is streaming and YT shit so it's probably a bit overkill but whatever. It looks really intimidating on my desk too because it's kind of huge.

Company is hemorrhaging cash. All of the nice perks that we had have been cut or significantly scaled back. Same day I was let go, the entire marketing and SM team was fired too.

Funnily enough Dundee is a place that might be on the cards so we may end up taking a drink together soonish one way or another.
