I knew when I posted that I'd get scientific explanation number one back in my face, but I honestly thought it would be 'skin contact and doorknobs' instead.
Changes not a fucking thing. Still No for me.

Pickle juice probably tastes just like urine, so I don't know what Zod's problem is.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Some were awesome and clean places and some were utter shitholes you'd swear had never seen a rag that wasn't soaked in a bucket of griddle drippings.
This. Most of the Waffle Houses I've been in have an air quality I put somewhere around "high cholesterol" and "black lung."

Depends on which side of the rural/urban line you happen to be in. I think most places do still allow it, though Jackson is trying to get a smoking ban enabled.

That depends on whether you sit in the White or Colored section.

It's Mississippi we're talking about. Have you been there? It's in a perpetual state of 1956.

For those of you lucky enough to be in NJ, these guys are just getting started. They do mail order stuff too. I have had several of their roasts so far and haven't been disappointed yet. I prefer super dark/roasted coffee in general, but Royal Mile does it a bit lighter and it is still amazing. They do very small batches and experiment a lot, so their stock is always changing. Check them out if you are so inclined. That's 2.5 hours from my house. I'll stop by next time I'm travelling down that way.

If anyone disparages Waffle House, I will cut you. They are one of or maybe the last true American short-order grill. Breakfast food anytime, you can watch them cook it, and they are ALWAYS fucking open. ALWAYS.
NJ diners do this as well. Find a good diner and can get some awesome pancakes or omelettes any time of the day, all night long.

It's Mississippi we're talking about. Have you been there? It's in a perpetual state of 1956. Actually, that's not ENTIRELY true. It's mostly true, but in the more built up urban areas, it's more like 1985. Sometimes even like 2000. The casinos (like Tunica and Southaven, which are also near enough to Memphis to be suburbs) are diverse. The rural areas though? 1856 is closer. I mean, if you come here from civilization, yeah, you'd probably think it's all like that. It's a significant culture shock from the rest the north or the more populated metro areas.

I know a great little diner like that in DC, too. Sadly, it will be closing for a few months so that a new building can go up in its location.

NJ diners are a phenomenon not repeated around the rest of the country, sadly. The Chicago area version aren't close except for look, and being owned mostly by Greeks.
Also, the Kansas City area sucks. I just spent what felt like forever doing work there. It was less than 3 days, but was an eternity.

Greasy spoons in Mass are independent and generally very good. I can think of two within 5 minutes.
I did not enjoy the Awful House the one time I was stuck in Georgia at a Pagan gathering gone very very badly wrong. On the other hand, I do remember it being, more or less, real edible food.

You used the words "Pagan gathering" and "Georgia" in the same sentence; in what reality can those be combined to achieve a postive outcome?

Kansas City is actually not a bad place to live but if you are only there for a few days it is the pits.

The 95F+ and high humidity didn't help. And I have to go back in a week. At least it's making me look forward to working in North Carolina next month, where it'll be cooler and less humid

I've gotten to the point of being really demanding about diners. I hate the ones that I've come to think of as "kit diners", even in NJ and PA--the ones that are run by Greek or Lebanese families that have a million cousins, but where all the food is strictly Sysco cans, etc.
Real greasy spoons that make genuine short-order stuff that isn't just made off-site by a big dining services company are really hard to find now. There's one in the suburbs outside of Philly that's pretty good that's decorated like a 50s place, a few in the Delaware Valley and Poconos, a couple in central NJ, etc. but tons and tons of "kit diners" too.

Austin does not have a proper fucking diner and it kills me. We have what could be best described as a twatty IHOP (Kerbey Lane for those wondering).
We do have the Waffle House though, so that's good enough in most cases. I do miss solid diners from the east coast though.
