Which is why pensions were a stupid idea to begin with.  We let companies defer payments to pensions like we let them defer taxes.  Then they go out of business or declare bankrupcy and reorgainize and voila, all that deferred debit never really mattered, only whatever portion the bankrupcy court can get.

My pension is finally getting discontinued next year (they quit allowing new participants about a decade ago; I am grandfathered in). We are getting a decent bump to our 401(k) contributions for 3 years (and an overall bump going forward) to compensate. I would rather have the pension, but I understand that they are burdensome for companies. If only employees had the good manners to die at the end of the their employment this wouldn't be such a problem.

I know the market will tank and my 401(k) will be worthess when I actually need it, so having 15 years worth of pension may keep me off of the streets giving handjobs for crack. Can't say I am exactly counting on Social Security.

Really? The whole I don't think I can rely on social security gag? At the very worst, you'll have 75% of your payments if no one ever does anything ever again.

You're assuming the boomers don't vote for massive payouts to cover their current lifestyles that they can't sustain employed, much less unemployed and looking at 401(k) they cashed out when the economy took a dump.

Or am I the only one who knows those idiots?

The only thing worse than pensions and unions is boomers.

What a terrible generation of fiscal idiots.

I used to think my company (of ~20 people) that I've been working at since 2008 was immune to the entire soulless thing. It was true too: we had two stable income streams from large multinationals (doing security evaluations on their hw/sw products) as well as being part of several EU research projects to have something to do during the empty months. As a result, we didn't have to fire anyone despite the global crisis OR Hungary's recent spiral down the toilet, and could go on with increasing salaries every year, hiring new people, etc etc. Then... one of those companies was bought up by MS in April, and MS basically nuked the entire product branch that provided the aforementioned revenue stream. Then two months later, the OTHER multinational company was also bought up by some faceless company I haven't heard of, and they've significantly slowed down the security evaluation requests as a result.

Outcome: four people (that's over 1/4 of the entire workforce minus administration) were let go just 2 weeks ago, with little warning -- and it seems like another 2-3 may follow in the next month. The boss/owner also held a talk about possibly changing some people's contracts to be project-based instead of salary-based. All this because of events outside our control -- even though we've seen the writing on the wall for a while, and tried drumming up new clients with little success... breaking into the supply chain of a large multinational takes a lot of time, especially if you're a small company that wants to do security.

So yep, nobody is safe... evil faceless corporation or not. Maybe govt jobs are a bit safer?

Loyalty died with pensions.
Pensions were a terrible idea to begin with.

I'm happy I don't have to live in the soulless world you guys seem to inhabit.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaan, this has nothing to do with soulless. These are businesses. Paying people when they stopped working is precisely the most pointless idea man has conceived, economically speaking.

It helps if one's society is based on taking care of humans. I realize the US isn't doing that anymore, and it's getting less and less popular everywhere.

I was shocked when my new company told me they had a pension plan and it was actually funded for many years.  I was surprised anyone out there still had pensions that weren't only for people who had been there +20 years and no new people allowed.

Not until the soulless world closes your library at least.

I want to live in your world, but that's been tough once the University let me go and my best opportunity was landing in a hive of scum and villainy.

Now the biggest problem is that if I get this job, I have to give my 2 weeks. I work for a very small company and it's almost family like. Gonna be rough. Especially since they just hired a new guy to be my counterpart and now they would have to do it all over again. That and I'm going on a trip (reward for meeting goals) with my immediate boss (who also met goals for the same company) with our spouses. I'm gonna get awards and shit. It'll be an awkward moment.

This whole process moved pretty fast.

I won't know until next month if I'm advancing in the search, but if I am, I have to at least tell a few colleagues then because they have to start making plans about who is taking over a number of things that I'm doing now, at least potentially. I'm both sort of looking forward to that conversation (even if I don't ultimately get the position) and dreading it a bit, simply because one of the people I like best is likely to get tagged with some of the onerous stuff I'm doing now, and he's already had his time at the oars. But it is kind of nice to think about the possibility of people not taking you for granted so much.
