Unless it was family, you have to let people make their own mistakes. Life is too short to burden yourself with self-destructive people.
This.

Depending on your state laws, you have a narrow window (if a window at ALL) to challenge\return a new car.  After that you're pretty much into lawyer territory where you have to prove some kind of fraud on the dealer's part or incapacity of the buyer to enter into legal contracts (and good luck with either of those).

Site hosting options/opinions?  Considering iPage right now but wondering if anyone has a good recommendation.  Not for a business per se; my web portfolio and resume.

Some of my stuff is in PHP; AWS apparently charges for anything dynamic.

Thanks!

Do you know how to setup the software your site needs to run on Linux?

Not yet.  I'd love to host it from home, but its a bit outside of my budget and time right now.  For the time being I just need to get it hosted and accessible.

It's nothing major, just a few applications I've been working on (build on a xampp host on my personal system) and my website.

I've been on Dreamhost for years now with nary a problem, but I don't particularly stress my site either.  It's just a place I host images and put my art.

I have used ipower as a hosting provider for a number of years (though I mainly use it for my persistent personal email these days), very reliable and they give you I think 5 mySQL instances per hosting account and PHP is not something you pay extra for.

http://www.ipower.com/

Looks like they have a sale right now, $3.95 a month gets you their Pro plan (which is basically their only plan) if you purchase 2 years up front. Looks like they upped it to 25 mySQL databases.

A little late to the conversation, but Signe, you can report the dealership to the Better Business Bureau.  They are great in situations where a business does something shady, but not fraudulent.  It doesn't have quite the weight it used to, now that there are so many on-line review places.  But many businesses - especially small-market, established ones with older clients - take BBB ratings very seriously.

Three years ago I would have sung the praises of dreamhost, but I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy today. Some servers are great, others are 45 second page loads. I moved our work and personal sites off in the last year.

Right now our work site is on linode and my personal sites and a fairly active vbulletin (30ish concurrent users, half million posts are on urljet, which specializes in vbulletin and for $20 I can't complain at all about the performance.

I've used ICDSoft for several years now, including some work for volunteer organizations.  Yeg's been using them, too.

We're both quite happy with them.

How is it outside your budget this is by far the cheapest option if you have a broadband internet connection and a spare machine.  The machine doesn't even have to be that great.  Also php runs pretty great on IIS with fastCGI (in some ways it is more secure than mod_php on apache) if you are more comfortable with Windows.  IIRC Windows 7 (pro?) has an option to add IIS as a feature.  Anyhoo, i'll pitch hostgator as a decent shared host although I think they got bought recentlyish.

Lack of spare machine.  I've cannibalized my last three builds, so I'd have to invest at least a few hundred just to get a five year old machine running.  I'd also really like to not frak up my current situation with adding a secure server to our home network.

Thanks for the opinions, all.  Lots of good info to go with.

That's a really good idea.  I'll tell her.  It might not get her money back, but at least she'll feel she did something about it.  I think that's much of the problem.  She was embarrassed, frustrated and felt helpless against that sort of intimidation.  Thanks for that suggestion.   Heart

Just be careful about having her (or you) personally sending out any kind of published negative review.  I think we are starting to see a bad precedent of businesses suing the consumer for what they perceive as slander (or is it liable?  whatever) that is costing them money.  Going through BBB probably provides some protection against that sort of thing, but check it out first.

Yeah, I use HostGator both for my personal/novel web sites (Joomla and Wordpress) as well as sites for some of my clients in my day job. It's solid cheap hosting. I've heard about some folks having issues with their sites getting hacked, but I have so far not seen any evidence of that and it's something you're going to see a little of at any shared host.

Any site can get hacked if the hostee installs applications and doesn't keep up with their patches.  That's probably not the host's fault.

So frustrating dealing with an endless circle of "do-this-please, I-can't-do-that, please-do-this, but-I-can't-do-this, need-to-do-this" with A/P.

There's a group trying to clear up old invoices that have been stuck in the system.  I'm cool with that, maybe then they'll stop bugging me about a vendor invoice from 2012 which isn't going to be paid ever.  Still, this guy keeps telling me that I need to do a confirmation within the system for an invoice.  I tell him I can't as the system doesn't allow me to do a manual confirmation for this particular invoice, nor do I have a message to do the automatic confirmation.  He comes back with this specific invoice needs a confirmation.   Facepalm  My response is that as soon as he tells me how I can do so when the prior restrictions remain, I'll be glad to do a confirmation.  Waiting on his response again. To top it all off, this is for an invoice I thought was handled back in November and the confirmation that services have been received should conceivably be covered by the clearly written "Okay to pay, 11/25/2013, <name>, <position>" that is written on the invoice itself.  I mean, it's right there on their damn copy!

Any site can get hacked if the hostee continues to use a default password and his username is his email.

I'm having an issue with a new medicine I have to take so, for some reason, I can't tolerate chewing and swallowing food.  So I've solved this with a fruit and one leaf of greens smothie in the morning, one fruit smoothing in the afternoon and a veggie smoothie with some protein (hopefully) at night.  I reckon I'd be okay with the protein being fish.  If not it's smoothies all day until I get used to this thing!  I'm okay with veggie smoothies as long as there's an apple in it.  Otherwise, bleh.  Bacon, cheezy poofs and switching out the beer for cranberry juice sounds loverly.
