I'd live in Flagstaff or Northern AZ.  It's beautiful up there. 

I think Colorado and Utah are perfect.  You have enough culture, good airports, mountains, and mild winters.  It rarely gets below zero in Denver.

Salt Lake City is underrated.  If you can tolerate all the Mormons it's very nice.  

I'm not a huge fan of Denver though.

I agree about SLC too.  I remember trying hard to land a job in Ogden, but I wasn't Mormony enough to land it. I should have hummed Osmond tunes while going to lunch.

It's almost impossible to break into the dental market in SLC without being Mormon.  I would never live there due to my anti-religion stance.  That is pretty much number one on my list of "must haves"-  relatively low levels of nutcase believers.

It got down to forty in SF this week and that's the coldest it's ever been here in my lifetime.  I'm having trouble adjusting to this multiple layers thing.

I think out of all the places I've lived, the two that stand out are Taos and Portsmouth.  Back when I lived in Taos, though, I was 18 and very heavily into skiing.  I worked at Taos Ski Valley and skied at least half a day every day that there was snow.  So maybe now I wouldn't enjoy it quite as much but it's lovely and I adore living in the mountains.  I do well with little to no air.  :p  And Portsmouth was the last place in England I lived before I came back to the US the first time.  We lived in a little marina and it was so nice.  It took me a while to get used to water and boat noises at night, but once I did, I found it very relaxing.  We were right up against the Solent and could see Portsmouth Castle from the patio garden.  Seriously, if you're feeling tense or unsettled, looking out on the water is soothing.  I was really happy to live there.

I believe P-Lo lives in a more built-up area; I live in the middle of a field, there are ten houses on my road, and I'm 1/4 mile from a real swamp.  In my case, I moved here from Alabama and there are a lot of spiders here.  I spent about eleven days in all biomes of Hawaii, and there are many, many more awful things in Georgia.  I determined that the people who insisted the islands are infested have come from the Northwest and California.  These people are also unable to be convinced otherwise.  This was confirmed when I talked with a restaurant manager originally from Louisiana.  So, individually less impressive specimens but a larger biomass in the overall analysis.

Plus my wife was bitten on the neck by a centipede one night; a real one, not a house centipede.  And we found a bat in our bedroom one night.

I'd just add "pollen" to that list, however, which is a worse thing than pollution here.  I can mitigate dangerous animal life in various ways, but I can't fight tree jizz.

I saw some news story saying we'd hit 40 and that was a record low since 1972.  I'd believe it got colder, though.

Weather-wise, I love where I live. We get good snow thanks to the Great Lakes and prevailing westerlies, and nice warm summers. Mountains, forests, lakes, and most deadly things get killed off by winter. Too bad there is no culture or economy to speak of (we just missed the top ten most miserable places to live this year). Ideally, I'd live in Maine or central VT. I love me some VT. Hell trying to find a job there, I almost applied for DHS.

The Springs is special, in that regard. Elsewhere along the Front Range it's more typical mid-western small town stuff (Ft Collins, for example). Denver and Denver metro aren't any more bible thumping than any other big city in the mid-west or west. It has been f*cking cold here the last week or so, but 0* temps are very rare. Usually 40s to 60s in winter. Dry. Snow completely melts a day or two later.

I did a lot of Google maps street views and reading up on Boulder when I was writing my 2nd novel. It looked like a great place to live. Close enough to a big city that you get stuff like major sports and concerts, but small enough it wouldn't drive this little Southern boy crazy with traffic and shit.

Rantoul is not that bad, it is just a town nearly destroyed by not having powerful political allies in Washington during the early rounds of BRAC. It was actually a nice little town before they closed the base.

I love Vermont.  And they seem to do everything very nearly right as compared to just about every place else in the US.

Eh, it snowed on Twin Peaks like 2 years ago! That was in January or February though, I think this might be the coldest December I remember.

I apply for every faculty job posted in Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.  I'd love to live in any of those states.  Definitely in my top 10 states.

We've been looking at the NY capitol district, we travel there enough for concerts. Close enough to the City to get most decent tours and some great cultural stuff. I was pushing the old lady to take a Director job in the hills but to be fair it looked like a hell job. But would've made enough I could've just worked odd jobs for scotch money.

Also, NY sucks ass. My father wasn't one for giving advice, but one thing he tried to tell me was 'get the hell out of NY'. Upstate NY, existing to supply water to NYC and take their garbage and criminals.

Looks are deceiving, traffic is sh*t in Boulder. And there is a no building policy in place, real estate is crazy expensive in the county.

Wife had to fly today from Seattle to Spokane, then drive 80mi to Colville, WA for a hearing.  She's got some time to kill before and texts me "you know how I know I'm in the mountains?  It's not that I'm surrounded by mountains, but the fact that I'm watching preschoolers playing outside in the 9 degree weather here".
