That's about all we have left on the ground, not counting snowbanks, after the warm spell we just had.

Wow, Vitamin D gives me some fucked up dreams when I take it.  Anyone else have this issue?

Is vitamin D the only thing that you're taking and what form are you taking it in?

This is in my wheelhouse.

Sigh, retiring a old backup system and having to restore then backup 10 year old computer tapes is not exactly what I had in mind this week. Only 20 more to go then this server / tapes can go bye bye.

Awesome. Are there legal requirements that say you actually have to retain those tapes in your particular industry? We don't keep anything that old, other than the crap that fills up the corners of the file servers that people never delete.

Just PO tablet.  I think I'm taking 5000 units.  I do take some other things like an assload of fiber ( awesome, for real), ashwaganda, turmeric, CoQ10, cinnamon, magnesium, and alpha lipoic acid.  This happens whenever I take vitamin D.  It's not nightmares, it's just really strange dreams that tend to repeat.

Do these dreams involve you wasting a lot of money to gain various placebo effects until you wake up in a cold sweat with the realization that it's all nonsense?

On a side note: People taking D3 and Zinc have commented on vivid dreams, but I have no logical explanation that would demonstrate causation.

Fiber and Magnesium are legit.  Alpha lipoic acid is halfway legit.  The others I just placate myself with.

That yellow thingy is the porch light. And yes, we got something like 3-4 inches in Jackson, MS today which is 2-3 more inches than Chicagoland has gotten all winter.

Fiber is good if diet is bad.

Do you use and drink softened water?  Most tap water is loaded with Mg and Ca.

I'm a big proponent of fiber.  I think that we underdo it with our recommendations from the gubment.  Also, I'm treating myself with braces right now and can't eat my typically fiberific stuff like Almonds.

And yeah, you got to soften your water down here or it will get all your plumbing fucked up.

So what about the Vitamin D and the dreams?  It's almost like clockwork.

Chicagoland has 1 more week to get some damn snow before I leave. Based on historical happenings, it'll all come the night before and day of departure.

I think we overdo red meat and under-do fiber.  Look at the average American dinner plate.  It's all gray and white.

I've heard patients complain about vivid dreams while taking Vitamin D3, but there's nothing to support causation that I know of.  Since D isn't really a vitamin (we can make it from cholesterol), it has me wondering about decomposition products and tertiary pathways.

Edit: Looking through a few old references that I have, excess vitamin D (particularly D3) can cause secondary hypercalcemia.  Perhaps that is at the root of your cognitive changes?  Cholecalciferol is toxic and shown lethal in high doses in Rhesus monkeys.  (J. Nutrition, 102, 975 (1972))

I wouldn't think it is the D directly, either.  5000 units is way over the recommended maximum uptake in Canada or Europe.  It's probably decomposition products or side reactions from having so much excess.  As the RDA is ~600 units, you might try cutting your intake in half and see if that has an effect.

[Wikipedia has a descriptor of the pathway.  Maybe an excess of one of those by-products?]

Hahahaha!  I'm really good at this!

Taking mega doses of anything fat soluble scares me.  It adds load to the liver, can store in the liver, and leads to tox profiles.

I would urge you to cut your dose way back unless it was prescribed by an MD.

There are legal requirements for 10 years for our accounting and HR stuff. The tapes span 3-10 years in age so I am just doing the whole batch.  99.9% of our stuff is backed up to disc which covers everything up to 45 days old. Anything longer than that we put to tape.

Don't remind me.  While I'm not a huge fan of winter in general, I do like to have at least some snow each year.  Plus, we need the damn water around here.  I don't want another summer like 2012.

And here's to being the red-headed step-child department of the company!  We do things differently than other departments (for a valid reason, mind you) which is going to make having our financials merged/taken over by a new finance person interesting.  Of course, I also got to find out that we've apparently been suffering from the financial version of Stockholm Syndrome or something, since the new finance assistant couldn't believe what I was saying when explaining how we had been doing things under previous finance assistant.  These will be good changes ut damn, it's going to take some getting used to.

That makes more sense.  Most doctors will warn that intake greater than 2000 IU can cause tox.  In reality, it takes something near 10000 IU per day to show reliable tox profiles.

There's a recent Harvard study on this somewhere... I need to hire someone to organize my files!

If you were starting a new homebrew project what would you include?  Eclipse + maven + svn or github?  Other than junit what would always include for unit tests and perf testing?  Any other useful plugins for stuff aside from test?  Always looking for recommendations.   Thanks.

I thought for a second you were talking about beer and was very confused.  Then I realized you were talking about software and am still confused.  Is "homebrew" some kind of Java framework or are you asking in completely broad terms what we'd use for any kind of small software project?  I'd think that would depend a lot on the project.

I would use IntelliJ rather than Eclipse (you can use Community Edition if you are poor), git instead of svn (though it doesn't matter a whole lot if you are the only dev), and you'll probably want some additional testing stuff like JMock for mocking.

I was being self-deprecating where "homebrew" meant homemade and amateur.  This is basically for any home made multi-month software project in Java.  I kind of want to start from scratch on something for the New Year and I wanted to learn what other people use in their day to day and would recommend.  We have our own stuff at work but I sense I'm not that current anymore.  Thanks.
