My poor sister is still in labor. Better her than me. I have been told she's OK, it's just been a slow labor. She has to be exhausted by now, I would think. :(

Is it her first? I'm sending my best good vibes. Probably she's heading toward a C-section.

Yeah, it's her first. The doctor can see the head now, at least! Hopefully it means she doesn't get a c-section, those are serious business.

Hope your sister starts progressing more quickly and congrats on being a soon to be aunt! Giving kids back to their parents after you've spoiled them or taught them to say naughty things is the best thing EVAR!

Baby has finally emerged! It is a girl, and that's all I know, because my brother in law forgot to tell my parents the kid's name in his text. :P

Baby's name is Quinn, apparently. Quinn Elizabeth. I cannot, CANNOT read her name without thinking of Queen Elizabeth. I probably shouldn't tell my sister that. I probably also shouldn't tell her that the first thing I think of when I hear "Quinn" is the Sith Warrior companion (who is ... not my favorite of their companions. And is also a dude.).

I have never heard of Quinn being a female name I've never met anyone who had Quinn as their first name, but it apparently is acceptable as a girl name (one of my friends is the nanny of a Quinn). And yes, I expect there to be some Harley Quinn jokes in this girl's life, since her aunts and uncle are all giant nerds. Her mother is too, but in a completely different way from the rest of us. :P

Quinn is the name of that blonde girl on Glee. I like names that give you a cool initial (like Q or Z).

Just got asked a genuine question : "Why do you keep books ?"
I really don't know how to respond. "Once a books read, it's read."
Well, that's an interesting view.

My answer would be "because I will re-read them". Of course, this fails to address the issue that I have many that I would never dream of re-reading. I can't give them away, because only I am dorky enough to read the shit I read if I have to be honest with myself. And I could never bring myself to destroy them, there's just something about that that would bother me greatly. Happily, almost all my books now are electronic, so this is no longer really an issue for new books.

Charity shops and hospitals, etc, will always take books. No, I'm more stranged out by the idea that books are, in fact, not a thing of permenance. They are a utility to be consumed then discarded.
I find that weird. Even with electronic books, the idea that I wouldn't have my purchase or 'thing' somewhere to access disturbs me.
But no, to this woman, a book is a transitory thing that you use much like chocolate.
Odd.

That's not odd; that's just downright mental. I donate books that I know I'll never reread again but for the most part, I keep all my paperbacks and many are rather beat-up from being read multiple times. Rereading a book is like catching up with an old friend you haven't seen in a while.

For me, it's two-fold. One, if I really enjoyed the book, there's a chance I may loan it to a friend at some point. Two, I really enjoy the decorative property of nice hardbacks, made even moreso by the fact I've read them. It's sort of a nice way for me to decorate my living space with what I consider to be a tangible knowledge reference.

Quite. I've spent the weekend moving 3 bookcases full to the garage to make room for Elena's new improved BIG GIRL ROOM, which is why this topic came up. Woman in question thinks I'm strange for 'having books I've read.'

Woman in question thinks I'm strange for 'having books I've read.' I'm with you on keeping books. We have every book I've ever bought at the house. It's getting to the point, however, that I'm going to have to start either culling some of them out or building a wall of bookshelves in every room of the house. I like the "library" look for a house, but some of the paperbacks look a little sad at this point. I just can't seem to let them go.

I'm, er, Old and I've bought a lot of books in my life. Best way is just to box 'em up and donate them. Someone somewhere will enjoy.
Except for those Anderson Star Wars Books. I burned them. Fucking Hack. Donate them to the hospital and all of a sudden you have a massive outbreak of fucking stupid disease that the doc can't deal with.

I don't read very many books more than once and I get rid of paperbacks once I'm finished. I usually take them to a used book store in the US, but those seem to be disappearing at a steady pace. In the UK, it's easier to donate paperbacks. I try to pass on hard cover books to friends or family, and since I don't buy very many fiction hard cover books, they seem easier to keep. I've already found a home for the book I'm reading now, which is good because it's a nice book! I have to admit that, on occasion, I have thrown paperbacks away. Sorry. Now, I think I can recycle them if I don't feel like packing them up and taking them some where. Hooray!
I don't throw away any books, even paperbacks, if they have pictures in them. I just can't do that. It's like they have souls or something.

I have so many books boxed up in my garage I had to buy heavy duty shelving... I very rarely re-read books and to be honest I should just visit my local library more rather than collecting yet more books....

I would say it's probably a symptom of never having read an interesting book. If all you ever read are bodice rippers, well yeah, they are disposable. Also, books are viewed through the lens of your experience and perceptions, both of which change with time. Which means that the book itself changes with time.

My wife and her friends don't really keep books, they just read them and pass them around amongst each other. I, on the other hand, hate to loan out my preciousessss to anyone else for fear they might get damaged or not come back.
In the interest of not being a total book hoarder, though, I did go through all of them when I unboxed stuff after we moved a couple years ago. If it was something I'd read more than once, or honestly liked enough I could read it again, or had practical use, I kept it. Everything else (quite a lot, actually) went into the firepit out back.
Books burn surprisingly poorly, IMO.

I'm lucky. My wife is more of a book hoarder than I am.
I am actually a bit disappointed in the Nook/Kindle era. I know it's progress, but I like having a nice collection of books on my bookshelf and I'm beginning to migrate towards just having everything on my iPad as well. I think it's important to have a well stocked library. It encourages the kids to read. Plus it looks bad ass to have an awesome office with a lot of nice hardcovers on the shelves.

It's how we've been conditioned to view everything these days, people included. But yeah, I keep most every book I suspect I'll ever re-read, and the remaining few go to Half-Price Books.
