I got two good pieces of mail today. 1) A large manilla envelope hand addressed from the Illinois Sec. of State's office with my license plates for my car (which they lost the first time apparently).  2) The bill from the hospital for my surgery/stay for $37,436 of which only $275 is my responsibility.

Well, considering that my insurance company is owned by the hospital....probably a lot less than what was printed on the sheet.

Yeah, seems typical that they get only 25-50% any more of what they bill.

McAffee completely hosed my desktops network stack yesterday.

I could reset the NIC and get an IP addr from the DHCP server/router but if I tried to ping the router the packets went no where.  After 90 minutes of futzing around with settings I just said screw it and uninstalled McAffee entirely and instantly everything worked again.

Fucking POS.  Unfortunately, I will probably have to re-install it because I get it free from my work and I have to have an 'approved' virus scanner running (it checks) to VPN in when I work from home.

What version of McAffee?  Is it home or is it Enterprise or something else.  Cause if they are forcing you to use Home on a corporate connect that is fucking stupid.  If its enterprise there has been a few BAD updates that McAfee has pulled back recently.  If the people that admin it didn't bring it back they are not on top of it....

Oh, the joys of not paying attention to exactly who is all included in a "Reply All".  It's not that I didn't want to reply to everyone in the distribution, but I didn't realize that one of the names belonged to the vendor.  I wanted to let my people know why there was a delay in getting an invoice processed and inadvertently copied the vendor in as well.  Not a huge deal (nothing was said that didn't need to be) but now said vendor contact has been hounding me and, of course, SAP decided to get itself fuxxored while I was gone and this particular invoice was caught up in things.  So I replied and explained (in a non-detail sort of way) but this could have been at least partially avoided if I'd been more cognizant of who was in the email chain in the first place.

Of course, this is a vendor who also refuses to send their invoices directly to the PMs (and or copy the PMs on the invoices) so they can be submitted for processing (which is oddly enough, quicker) and instead, sends them directly to A/P which actually means delays.  And they are about the only one that does this for my group, too.

No, I used to use MSSE but a while back it got taken off the approved list.  I'll check to see if it's allowed again next time I need it.

McAfee Enterprise version is indeed SHIT. UTTER UTTER SHIT. We had it for years and on top of the delays it would give when updating (like stop what you are doing because your computer won't let you do anything else while this shit is updating delays) to just being a bloated piece of shit. Finally, my Sysadmin just said "Fuck it." We stopped paying for it and we just use Avira or Microsoft's built in virus stuff and haven't really had much problem since.

How the hell did you manage to actually only get one bill for a visit?  The last time I had to do anything, I ended up getting three bills from three different companies despite only making a single routine visit in an office?

And despite all this, insurance companies and healthcare providers have the fucking gall to complain about Americans neglecting preventative care.  Fuck this goddamned country.

Meh McAfee Enterprise is middle of the road for centrally managed antivirus.  There are FAR worse things out there.  I would love to just ditch it here but they seem to think that it is needed.  Although the stupid thing doesn't stop any of the recent virus infections (thank you java and flash and don't get me started on why we still have those stupid things still). 


Murgos,  do they actually check to see if the services are running? Usually vpn software just checks to see if the antivirus is installed and sometimes up to date....

Yeah, seriously, for my shoulder scope I got something like 5 bills. One from the surgeon, 2 from the hospital, 2 from the anesthesiologist. The 2 from the last guy set off my bullshit alarms but I decided it wasn't worth opening a can of worms over my small share of the payment.

Symantec really is god-awful. We use Sophos now, which is much better.

I still won't recommend anything but MSSE for regular use when people ask me though.

I use Kapersky at home, which seems ok so far. Work uses McAfee and it does indeed cause problems from time to time. Or more often than that.

My subscription for ESET ran out yesterday. Uninstalled and went with MSE. I can't see a reason to pay for AV at this point.
