I need to finish my 40k skaven this winter, that screaming bell mounted on an apc still makes me smile.

I originally got into D&D because there was a little hobby shop on the way to school (I was in 4th grade) and I thought the minis were amazing (Ral Partha elves or something).

I haven't done D&D since I lost track of my buddy from college after 2nd year.  However, I'd still go in to the game shop when it was in the mall.  Sometime in my mid-20's the wife and I were in there and she found a Ral Partha set of Forgotten Realms minis and thought it'd be fun to paint 'em.  Turns out it was.

We then found out Ral Partha's factory was only a 5 minute drive from where we were living in Cinci at the time and blew a lot more money than we should have over the next few years.  When they went under, so did our mini painting.  So sad.

Do the words "finish" and "40k" go together?   awesome, for real

A reminder we have a miniatures thread for the painters or merely interested parties, down in the Nether Regions of f13.

I'd tell you to 'please stop', as I've already pledged 200% of what I'd budgeted for that damn kickstarter - but I'm refreshing that page constantly myself anyway. Well and truly sucked in.  ACK!

Their combination of constantly adding more free stuff, and optional extras as stretch rewards is terribly alluring.

Part of me wants to learn to paint minis, but most of me knows the cats would be a constant pain in the ass while I attempted to do so.

Yeah, there is absolutely no way I'm ever going to be able to paint them unless I lock my cat away (which I'm not going to do). Still. Needful things.

I've had to set up my stuff in the laundry room because of the cats.  It keeps them out of the paint, but I have to listen to my cat cry at the door.

How is Austin in October?  Thinking about hitting a conference there.

Anytime that is not June through September is nice. October is when it finally starts cooling down, November is probably best.

It's the last third of October. 20-24th I think.  Anything interesting going on around there that time of year or just general Austin-ish stuff?

If you're here early enough on the 20th there is The Thong Jog 5k but other than that everyone is probably still recovering from ACL Music Fest which is the weekend before.

You can find some fun in Austin no matter when it is.  If there's a football game you can always go downtown and tailgate.  That's a blast.

Finally.  Back to work tomorrow after this fucking lousy furlough I was required to take.  At least I'm set again for another two years, although who knows what's going to happen once the company split is finalized.

First day of the semester for me.  I teach two demanding undergraduate courses this term and I think I have terrified the students.  The Deer-in-the-headlights looks were prominent among the first few rows.

You are too late for ACL and too early for Halloween, I stay clear but Halloween seems to be taken fairly seriously on 6th.

The good news is BBQ and beer are always in season.

Our pharmacology professor in dental school looked just like Vizzini from the Princess Bride:

He walked in the first day of class and got this funny look and yelled, "the cliffs of insanity" at the top of his lungs, then said, "now that we got that out of the way lets talk about pharmacology".  It was awesome.

Friend of mine's physics lecturer had a neat trick of dealing with students coming late in the first few weeks. He knew enough about archaeology to be able to switch pretty much instantly to a lecture on the symbology of medieval Celtic crosses for about a minute, which was normally just about long enough to tell the retreating latecomers that they had actually come into the right room.

I keep talking myself out of blowing $200 on the reaper minis and paints (as I have none that aren't 10+ years old now)

That damn kickstarter needs to end soon so I can keep my money.

First, why aren't you in the minis thread downstairs here!? Git you to paintin'!

Second, for $100, this is the most amazing deal ever in the history of miniatures:

Pure Insanity. And the fact that they're cheap as hell means it's so much easier to tackle painting them. That's my main motivator for the whole KS, I'm going to start mowing through these things to actually get decent at painting...and then start tackling some of my drawer of shame after 20 odd years of neglect!

Finally finished upgrading all of the people who needed AutoCAD to be upgraded today.

That is two weeks of my life I will never get back, and one product key I will probably never be able to get out of my memory.

I'm not in the thread 'cuz I haven't painted in 10 years.  I'm avoiding the KS because I really don't have the $200 to blow AND I don't really want all the minis lying about my house.  We don't game so owning them is pointless and I've enough kitschy crap as it is.  But the shiny.. it calls.

Why hasn't anyone seriously challenged AutoCAD? It's so awesomely shitty at what it is that I'm kind of astonished that it stands so alone.

They just announced all Vampire level pledged can elect to forgo the Sophie mini and use the $25 credit toward something else. Free Nethyrmaul!

And I've painted one mini in 14 years. That is changing, always a good day to start painting again!

It is simple, any time someone comes out with a product that Autodesk sees as a threat to their effective monopoly, they buy them out.

And they are more deeply entrenched in the architecture/building/construction/civil engineering fields than Microsoft has ever been in the enterprise IT world.
