Fuck it. You may have heard about an earthquake striking in northern Italy: the center was about 20km from where I live (I live in Modena city, earthquake happened in the nearby towns). 5.9 Richter on the 20th of May, and another one (5.8) this morning at 9am CET (2h 30m ago), same magnitude: this one seemed even longer and stronger. I think it lasted between 15 and 20 seconds. I experienced other earthquakes in my life, but nothing compared to this. I just can't imagine how it must be in Japan, California and other similar seismic areas.

8 death so far caused by this morning's earthquake, plus the seven victims caused by the one that happened a week ago :(

Wow, that's pretty crazy that earthquakes that small are causing actual deaths, in a country that presumably has real building codes.  undecided

Just because they have building codes doesn't mean people follow them.

Even US Building codes don't account for seismic activity of that scope outside of California & parts of the west coast.  Risk vs. Cost.

When I was working at a ISP I am fairly certain that I got called on one of the major holidays at least once.  Also including getting woke up the morning after my 30th birthday in vegas.  I was still drunk on that call...  Another time when I was on vacation and I was on the beach.  Yea I really do not miss that job much.
I'm permanently on call for my job.  As in I don't get any time off unless I specifically put someone else on the phone while I'm gone.  Then they call me anyways and make me troubleshoot their problems over the phone for a few hours here and there.  My favorite is I get called in because the operators refuse to go out to the machine and push the buttons to turn things back on.  So rather than walk out there to the next building where they are already on site, they call me in from whatever I'm doing across the bay area to come do it for them.  This was added to my job last year and I didn't get a say so in it, pretty much leaves me ticked off most of the time.

Both of those take so long to be drinkable (2+ years) that the oak has got to help a wee bit.

..speaking of which, I still have a gallon of the buckwheat mead knocked away...  (rummage)

I've learned not to be too skeptical where "add avocado to anything and everything" is concerned.  It has a way of working.  Somehow.  That said, I can't  even imagine what avocado mead would taste like.

In its natural form, it is also really damned good for you. Not sure how much of the nutrition would survive the processing, but it is worth a shot! I have always been on the fence about avocados...I think it was a texture thing. I have recently turned the corner and love them on damned near anything now.

There used to be a place near my office that made these incredible avocado smoothies.  Best thing ever.  Also, Mitchell's makes an avocado ice cream, which I think they might have used as the base.

Avocado is basically pure fat in vegetable form.  I think you can use it any way you would use dairy and it works pretty well.  Fermented?  Well, Mongols ferment horse milk so why not!

I don't know what the FUCK is going on in Seattle the past week. There have been like 6 or 7 shootings since Friday. It is bad enough that I trolled the mayor on Twitter and asked him if he would let me know when it was safe to come spend money in his city again. At least 2 completely random people have been killed in the past 2-3 months. Murders are at 19 for the year now. They were at 3 this time last year.

But no, there is no gun problem in this country. I am sure someone could walk into a cafe and stab everyone just as easily.  Ohhhhh, I see.

The avocado honey is nothing like the fruit.  It's quite tart and acrid, similar to the buckwheat honey (which is even more so).

These two are dry meads, though, so I liken them more towards a (weak) brandy than ye olde Chaucer's.  I don't know that I could imagine either as a sweet mead, without lots of blending or fruit or both.

19?  Hell I think we hit that in January or February.  Unless you're talking about only fatal shootings.. which we're somewhere in the 20's to 30's by now probably.  I think we average 55 a year, just in the actual Downtown district.

Good to hear you're ok, though.

Atlanta averages about 6 a month. In murders that is.

About thousand people die a year here in their cars. I'm much more concerned about drivers in this town than guns. A day doesn't go by anymore where 2 or 3 people die on the roads.

The flavor of the honey is determined by the pollen the bees gather.  He will add spices to some, but they're more impurities to tweak the flavor than primary components.

It doesn't help that lots of buildings in Italy have these giant metal bars on the outside of them to hold them together. (Well, not lots..lots of historic ones).

See, the French displaced wall stress using flying buttresses. So they got thinner walls with more room for windows, and the weight of the roof was spread out to the butresses. The Italians, seeing some of their buildings wanted to collapse outward as the roof fell down (shoving the walls apart) stretched a giant honking chain between the walls, with big metal crowbars on the outsides. That kept the walls from collapsing outwards.

It is far sturdier than it looks. THey're called chain ties, maybe? Surprising number of buildings had them.

The 8th and Seneca killing was relatively close to where my wife and I work, and the guy killed himself a neighborhood over from where we live.  This just isn't a city for all this shit, but somehow it feels better knowing it was all the same deranged fucker.  Glad he put one in his head, saves everyone the trouble of a trial and all that.
