I don't think f13.net is on a blacklist somewhere, or I'd not be able to get to it from inside the networks of two different massive global corporations.  My guess is that luckton spends too much time on F13.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

It is. When I was at M/I homes F-13 was flagged as "Gaming" by websense and I couldn't get on when first hired. Then they turned it off for a while and installed something else.. I forget which blocker, but it had a blue warning screen that indicated a block.  I remember because I had to let my boss know that I wasn't browsing porn when a masonry company was blocked as "Adult Content."  Ohhhhh, I see.

MMo-Champ and most web/flash games also came-up as blocked due to "Gaming" category.

Facebook was blocked as "Social media site"

All download sites like dropbox, fileshare, whatever else were also blocked as "potential virus vectors" and had to be unlocked by IT on a person-by-person basis.

Categorical block lists are fun to manage. We had a patron at the library blocked trying to access scribd last night. It is flagged as file sharing which we had to categorically block because we were getting bombarded by DMCA claims even though bit torrent and other file sharing programs were shunted down to zero available bandwidth.

Sorry to hear, Yeg. sad
Well, first trip back to New Orleans since Katrina came through.  I'm glad to see that it appears to mostly be back to normal.
Did you go to the east-side of the city?  That's where the devastation was most staggering when I toured the city.  Is Meterie still packed?

I haven't gotten to do a lot of tooling around, but I did get over to a game store in Metarie last night.  Everything seems to be in working order, for the most part.

Were they targeting YOU?

Doubtful, although I do like to think they wrote the entire "Proper Usage of Agency Computers" policy based on my feats over the years.  For some reason they see my actions of uninstalling McAfee eAgent and the subsequent anti-virus and stuff as a no-no, even though I still had virus protection using software that didn't half the life of my hard drive due to excessive force of deep-scanning every goddamn file that I or the OS itself would call for  Ohhhhh, I see.   why so serious?

No, the first group they targeted for this Websense deployment was the group that uses the net the most, and they use it mostly for social networking and games.  The games part they got mostly right (though I still access the entire Joystiq network), but they did nothing with the social network stuff.

Also, they blocked the ability to access Mozilla and google.com/chrome.  Good thing I already got my copies  awesome, for real

Come now, we're talking about McAfee here.  Recall that this is the same international AV company that released an update two years ago that essentially broke every Windows computer that it touched.  The amount of overtime I got paid helping out IT with assisting them in fixing the issue for all the computers of ours that it broke made for a very fine paycheck that week.  Hell, I had the only working computer for a good day or two because of it  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

I also worked in the IT dept. for the agency for four years.  Many people still come to me to fix stuff, even the IT techs themselves, much to their angst.  They fucking hate it when they've been working on something for hours and I walk in, click/wrench a few things, and everything's fine. why so serious?

I understand what you're saying, believe me.  The IT department and I still get along just fine.  I'm actually interviewing for a new job position in the agency next week that'll let me flex my tech skills in a way they've never been done before.  Very much looking forward to the opportunity, so long as I can beat the other nine people that applied.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

Luckily when talking about IT people we don't need to make that distinction, since they all seem to think they know what they're doing.

I love my IT guys (they may be monitoring this).

As a former IT guy myself, I know enough to just let them do their jobs. Though I do appreciate that they didn't put up a fight when I asked for Admin access. They knew I'd be calling them daily to install something if they didn't.  Oh ho ho ho. Reallllly?

It was cool when I started here ten years ago - the main troubleshooting step on our old software was to disable everything unneeded in MSCONFIG. So we'd go in and turn off whatever monitoring software they used and just chalk it up to troubleshooting. Monitoring software's gotten smarter since then.

Ahem I am not going to touch the uninstalling IT approved Antivirus....   However after using websense for awhile I wanted to choke the developers of it.  Thankfully we moved to a Ironport solution from cisco which pretty much just does what I ask.  You still have users complaining about not getting to websites but it is a dull roar.  Although the one that kills me is we block ads (mostly my choice) and people cannot figure out why the linkes on google, bing, yahoo do not work.  You know the big ones with "ad" next to it.  why so serious?

So glad our company doesn't give a crap about web filtering.  It's probably just a trap, however, so it's easy to find justification to fire you should the need arise.   why so serious?

In our case we had a issue (prior employee doing something he should have) which caused them to implement it.  We are a VERY open company and only implement things which people ruin it for everyone else.

We use OpenDNS. Thus far, it doesn't categorize f13 as Gaming. Hopefully that remains true.

Is there an easily accessible report that IT can look at that ranks who gets blocked the most? I'm sure I'm in the lead by far at my office, if so.

Absolutely.  Well, depends on your IT.

I remember a help desk guy disabled his AV once and opened the "i love you" virus on the corporate network.  That was brown trousers time for a while, fortunately he lied and gave a different manager's name as his boss when the ominous phone call arrived.   Ended up pretty hilarious as the manager he named got balled out instead of me and I returned the favour, to the idiot who opened it, by stopping the local IT manager from hitting him a 2nd time.
