The internet fucking sucks today. This is NOT what it would be like if SOPA went through. Me thinks we went overboard with the fear on this one.

A lot of stuff is backdoor for other initiatives, of course. COPA is a way to make shitty parents feel good and also make a bunch of organizations cut themselves off from federal funding (which ties funding to compliance).

I became a dad yesterday for the third time.  Big boy...8 pounds, 12 ounces give or take.

Scary.

Congrats.

Didn't I see you log in ToR last night? How the hell did you pull that off?

Nah, definitely not last night.

Congrats, dud!

Surely we don't know each other well enough for you to be flinging insults at me like that.

Not at the moment she's not!   But yeah, that is some crazy stuff you people go through.  No wonder you are all mental.

In related news, all babies remind me of Vizzini from Princess Bride.  I realize that might seem inconceivable.

Ever meet someone, talk to them for a while, gab about bullshit, then later find out they wrote a lot of books, including a "for dummies" book?  These other parents are making me look bad.

Congrats Cyrrex.  Im always in wonder of parents with multiple little ones.

Happy moment today: I refilled and put out a hummingbird feeder in last night's snowstorm.  And this afternoon there was a hummingbird!  Rare enough at our house, but today it was still snowing.

Mom gave me a set of stuff for birds in the yard. Suet basket, hummingbird feeder, small seed feeder. Nothing yet, but I figure it will take a while, since there hasn't been any feeding there in at least ten years.

We have a couple of hummingbirds at my parents place in Colorado. There are two feeders out but they seem to prefer one or the other. However, in typical fashion, they refuse to feed together. One must rule them all even if the other is trying to get close to the free feeder. Should that happen, they chase each other around and nobody gets any food!

I did some planting in my front yard this morning, just in time for the rain to finally start this afternoon.  Flawless timing.  Each winter I've been adding a few more hummingbird and butterfly food plants in the hope of getting a good showing in the spring; we'll see if this is the year.

I think that beats mine.

Somewhat related: you get a sense of how few people work in AIX when you attend a meet-and-greet.  Meet strangers, turns out you know the same people and one guy actually works for a recently-purchsed Coke division.  We gabbed a bit about how we are merging our datacenters with each other, and how his boss that I interviewed with is in fact a jerk.  So I was right about that one. Ohhhhh, I see.

I am feel so so weary about a meeting on Friday in which I know that a significant number of people are going to argue for a policy change that is both a short-term and long-term disaster because they're feeling butthurt about having not gotten their way once out of about twenty tries in one decision taken last year. Basically they want to lock in a hard structural privileging of their workgroup in larger institutional decisions and change the way we make those decisions so that the first principle is that you represent the particular interests of your group rather than try to decide what's best for the whole institution.  It's one of those discussions where there's no way to win--I don't particularly want to make enemies of this bunch but that's what will happen if I say anything about why it's a fucking dumb idea.

I wish you luck with that one, Khaldun.

A question for the other IT peeps around here:

Say you are blindsided by management about an issue that is "pervasive and is costing the company money."  You ask for details, and management replies that it's random and they cannot give you more detail other than it appears to happen less than 5% of the time.  Noone is able to reliably reproduce the issue, so you ask to be contacted when the issue is happening to debug it on the spot.  Management refuses to do so, and tells you to either get it fixed or bring in an outside consultant to fix the problem.

What is the correct response to this situation?

Advise management to see a psychologist? I wouldn't even know where to begin trying to "fix it" if they won't tell me what "it" is, where it is, how to find it, or why they think it's costing the company money.

It's a call center, and the issue is phone call quality (on a random guesstimated 5% of calls, no examples given).  That's about all I have to go on.

Do they use a VoIP PBX?
If so (as it is unlikely in this day that a call center would not be on VoIP), do they have real-time network traffic monitoring inside their office?
Can they at least give you a specific call/time to trace back?
Do they record all incoming calls so you can listen to a recording and actually hear the problem?

My hunch is that there are spikes of network congestion at the time of the calls that are lowering the call quality. Of course, it could just be issues on the customer end.
