I'll second what Numbers said - Congrats! Now you can spoil the grandkid (when you get to see them) and then give the kid back for the parents to deal with.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

So as part of lockdown madness I decided to join the army reserves back in March. Apparently the British army has now moved away from Zoom to using Discord for remote training and I've decided I definitely need a new account rather than reusing my gaming/shitposting account for this. Definitely feels a weird option but pretty standard for 'what IT solution won't cost any money' that the army seems to go in for (alongside field kit that costs an enormous amount of money in exchange for not working as well as a civilian option).

At the time any activity that would involve more time outside seemed like a good idea. I've been pretty happy but the regiment I'm in seems to mostly recruit lawyers, accountants and IT professionals. So quite a different atmosphere to probably most army units.
Edit: I also got married but not sure I can blame that one entirely on a winter in lockdown.

So...the British Army just takes in any fat old Gen X professional who volunteers and does training over Discord.
This seems normal.

I was born in 1984 so I'm just on the cusp to have 'come of age' in the new millenium (and f13 is one of the communities where I can still be one of the younger people around ) Edit: That said one of our instructors is a Brazilian guy who was just 50 when he joined a few years ago. He's a massive radio geek though and signals is one of the roles they really want people in so I can see why they might have stretched entrance requirements there. Very odd chap. So the British army Reserves will take a fat Gen Xer as long as they've got useful skills.

Bitch, you Gen Y. Yeah, I know there is an overlap, but let's be honest with ourselves

I don't know if it's a different thing but Gen Y never really caught on in the UK and basically got rebranded to millenial. Either that or I'm part of the forgotten generation

It is quite literally the latter. Gen Y is the generation of...absolutely nothing? That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Edit: the internet seems to say that Gen Y and Millenials are the same thing, but in my mind I have always considered the real millenials to be distinctly different and also younger. Whatever.

My old lady is, if that helps Boomer is such a wide span, it's pretty funny. My mom is also a boomer (mom is early boom, fiancee is late boom). Her parents and my grandparents were the same ages.

Boomer has just started to mean "anyone older than me". I literally saw some mid-20s something bitch about boomers, which he defined as "anyone over 40". Fuck you, we're the boomer's kids.

It's cool. Gen Z is calling us boomers, Millenials seem to forget we exist, and the boomers wonder when we're growing up (ie: becoming like them).
Never. Like I'm going to give up video games. I'm growing old my own way.
And if I dress like the fucking cool person I wanted to be back when I was 15, just with better quality clothes, well that's just fucking dandy bitch.
In fact, I'm getting into cosplay because I can. I got a bitching wizard hat, a burning desire to wear it, and a dnd group.

Mostly I've got half of a decent costume for both cosplay and Ren Fest, so I really just need decent boots (so goddamn pricey), and a few bits and bobs to have both a rather flexible ren fest costume AND a decent cosplay for a dnd podcast I like. And lately -- I think because of just the long solitude of COVID -- when I do go out and about, I've been wanting to be a lot more expressive than in the past. Went to Ren Fest and to a fun Halloween bar crawl before Omicron knocked everything back down, and found myself wishing I'd gone in costume to RF and really happy with what I'd put together for Halloween. Mid-life crisis? Having no decently creative outlets? Doesn't really matter. Want and *can*, so why the fuck not?

When I was 19, I got a big raise and for the first time in my life was able to conceive of blowing money on something fun for myself rather than frantically squirreling it away to stave off catastrophe. A nice pair of ren faire boots was the something fun. They were a great purchase, not the least because unlike most items of clothing I bought at that age, they still fit me.
