Labor in China is too expensive now (about the same as in Mexico) -- places like Bangladesh are where it's at now.
Correct, which is wonderful because of how much they've spent on its infrastructure.

I'm taking Spanish right now. I learned German in high school, and glad I did because I was able to wrap my head around their crazy gender rules before I knew any better. Spanish is nutty with random gender assigned to nouns, memorization is a bitch.

My favourite thing about Spanish is that the word for a fish is 'pez'. But this refers only to a living fish swimming around in a river or whatever. If you order fish at a restaurant or buy it in a shop, it's 'pescado' instead which isn't strictly a noun but a past participle of the verb 'pescar' (meaning 'to fish'). So pescado means 'one who has been fished'.

So far my favorite is 'big toe' (which I learned because I, you know, broke mine). I learned a variant from an Argentinian friend, but my Spanish teacher says it works, 'el dedo gordo del pie' or 'the fat finger of the foot'.

Which is funny, because a thumb is a 'pulgar' but you would get funny looks if you said 'pulgar del pie' rather than 'dedo gordo del pie'.

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Spanish is waaaaay more regular than, let's say, French.

Spanish is just, overall, easier - and way more useful.

I took a bite out of a Honeycrisp this morning and had to double check I wasn't eating a particularly crisp pear. Natural Grocers had several different kinds of apples, so I'm going to have to get a selection to taste test next week.

I'm told Noche is closing its doors in Vinings.  Need the spiced almond recipe.

I'm less familiar with Perl, but I can't imagine a world in which Perl and Ruby belong in the same sentence. Except for this one.

The project I'm working on with DFP's api was built using PHP, but I so wish they had used Ruby. I love that language and wish I could do everything in it. I don't quite have the chips yet though.

I don't think I have a problem with ruby but I was very interested in limiting the number of new things I learn each day.  I'm going to get just enough nginx to design a system, then chef and terraform to deploy/config.  Learning python/boto to solve a problem with AWS inventory and making decent progress.  Meanwhile, custom in-house application must be learned.  I'm just a wee bit overloaded.  Thankfully the gem thing was not stupid and so far vagrant is easy as shit; grateful for small blessings.

All scripting languages are basically the same, just syntax changes for the most part. it's the system-specific calls and functions you have to learn. Perl can be annoying just because there are a ton of shortcuts and it can be impossible to read someone else's code.

Ruby borrowed a crap-ton from Perl -- Ruby is basically a mash up of Perl, Smalltalk and Lisp (functional programming), plus a few other languages sprinkled in.

Ruby lifts constructs directly from Perl like ``, =~ //, $ system variables (though nobody uses the short forms in Ruby), "here" documents, and so on.

I'm a big fan of Ruby, but I've been learning Python for my current job since that's what my coworkers know. It's bizarre how the languages basically do the same thing while being antithetical to each other in terms of design principles. All of Python's "take an ordinary method, obfuscate its name with a bunch of underscores, then make you call a function (or keyword!) to access an object attribute" stuff makes me twitch.

Over the past few months our town has been replacing a lot of our natural gas lines, and there have been several leaks. About a month ago, a lawyer's office literally exploded and they stopped work for a while.

They restarted Monday, and today my fiance calls me at work because the house reeks of gas. So we're sitting in the car, waiting for the gas company to arrive.

Today I thought of a really funny joke...and then realized that I didn't want to say it on the internet. Not because I gave a shit that some people would be offended (that was actually half of the funny). Because I realized that I really didn't want to be on the same side with the people who would admit to finding it funny.

I am not sure if this is personal growth. If I ignore the growth long enough, maybe it will go away?

There's a small lake in my garage. It's clearly coming from the washing machine, but damned if I can figure out where. I'm suspecting from the wall proper. I think a leak in the drain line, not the cold or hot water lines. I checked the drain lines themselves, and they're pretty dry even as I ran an empty load. But the bulk of the water is in the corner behind the dryer, but perhaps the slab is titled. There's some under the bottom back of the washer (LG front loader) but I can't tell if it just puddled there or came from there.

Plumbers or washer repair guys? Flip of a coin here.

Yep, did that. I ran it on a rinse and drain cycle -- nothing. Took the top off (front loader) and took a hard look while it ran. Nothing. No evidence of water inside the machine itself (unless it's directly under the drum, where I can't see it, or leaking down a wall where it's obscured by the drum).

Got some baseboard damage behind there (it's the garage, I don't even bother to look) but that might have been done years ago. There was so much water I suspected the drain hose or the drain itself (although if there's a leak in the pipe in the wall, it'd have to be at or almost at floor level. No wall damage other than right there at the floor).

Of course this happens when I have a ridiculously busy day tomorrow AND plan to be gone all weekend. Lovely timing.

Improper load? I've had that sort of thing happen when an article of clothing got caught in the door seal.

IANAP, but I've had to deal with plenty of broken utilities.

Posting this here because the game development forum seems really dead.

Does anybody know which of the many "game creator" type programs out there is the best/easiest?  Got an idea I've been kicking back and forth with somebody, and want to prototype it real fast (no real graphics, just simple place holders and text, ect).  Don't want to spend a lot of time trying to code up something since its just a silly side project.

I've become a big believer in Construct 2. HTML5, so it will run on anything, can take and send data from/to anything that will respond to HTTP with very little effort, but will also interface with platform-specific DLL's if you don't mind losing the portability, and uses an event-handler structure that will be instantly familiar to anyone who has worked with C# (or most other .NET IDE's). As long as you don't get into true 3D rendering, it will get the job done.

Goddamned motherfucking mice in the wall.

Normally no big deal, set out traps in the garage where they come in and in the attic where they enter the wall itself.

With a cast I can't walk on? Scritch-scratch can't do a fucking thing about it. I thought I was going batty before. HPL is chuckling somewhere.
