Perhaps I'm being cynical but I assumed he meant SUSE people like to pretend rpms don't include the word Redhat.

Why do SUSE employees pretend we don't all know what "rpm" stands for?

Isn't one of the core ideas of enterprise software to document stuff with the assumption that no one knows what anything stands for?  Maybe they are playing to the SLES/SLED crowd?

They showed it as: "RPM: RPM Package Manager" Ohhhhh, I see.

That is almost coffee mug worthy, unfortunately my next mug order will probably go to the "Big Brother is WWWatching You!" quote I saw the other day.

edit:  On a similar note why does Oracle generously pepper verbs throughout their product guides when none of the content actually ever gets to the point and describes how to you know do something productive (or anything at all).

Things need a beginning.  Also recursive acronyms are pretentious.  I'm sorry that naming things is hard; do better.

I got roped in to a demo of Diceplus at GDC Europe last month. It looked like a solution in search of a problem and extremely gimmicky. I certainly couldn't imagine why anyone sane would develop games for it.

Yeah, you're right.  That is sort of silly.

It isn't explained well and the picture makes it look like there are multiple dice in the set.

I am so sick of SuSE myself. I wish ParentCO would run a real OS, but no, they have to be special and german and have suse developers on-site.

Which is nice, except their god-damned enterprise install procedures involve curl and bash scripts. And now they're forcing the shitty OS on us.

Random tool instructions: for RH, download this rpm, or just use a rpmforge mirror. For SuSE, uh, here are some compiler flags, good luck, email us if you get it working!

I should get back to nature, too.  You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer.  Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached.  Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

Depends on the kid.  And crawling isn't so bad.  It's the standing that's killer.

"No, don't do that... wow, that looked painful."

I still have vivid memories of my son standing up grabbing part of the exercise bike: he then grabs a cord (that has some elasticity), pulls, cord slips out of his hand, and he then pitches forward, face first into a metal bar. Ricochets back like some sort of physics demonstration and falls to the floor.  I'm halfway laughing, halfway scared he just broke himself.  Son gets up, looks around to see if he should cry, then goes back to playing with the cord.

I'll throw this in here, since it was in a denned thread but deserved an answer:

2. Fanwank for good, but overrated TV (I assume this will be overrated, when has a spinoff ever been good? If you say Angel, I'll cut your nose off) is a waste of time.

The Jeffersons
The Colbert Report
Happy Days (a spinoff of Love, American Style)
The Muppet Show (from Sesame Street)
DS9
The Simpsons (Tracey Ulman Show)
Absolutely Fabulous (French and Saunders)
Frasier

Personally, I would also include Torchwood, Caprica, and Xena - but I won't push it.

Calling some of those spinoffs is a bit of a stretch.  Frasier is a very solid example though.

We put those things into the electrical sockets and didn't need to.  We skipped the foam and everything is OK.  Now, if you're not going to watch your kid every minute, then sure, foam the fuck out of things and go have a drink.  The unfortunate truth is that children can hurt themselves on pretty much anything.  This is OK most of the time.  They heal quickly and sometimes learn lessons.

I think its a good idea to put the socket protectors in and be careful with electrical cords.  It's also a good idea to be careful with stairs and under sink chemicals.  Generally you want to protect against things that could kill the child, but bumps and bruises are going to happen.  You can't babyproof everything though, and generally it's a good idea to watch the kids.

When Elena was born, we bought the whole range of protection stuff.  Hinge protectors, drawer stops, plug sockets, donkey molestors, the whole lot.

I still have it all in the garage.  She's fine.

Couple of near death experiences, but nothing major.  Let's be honest, being a parent, you're gonna freak out no matter what.
