So I was looking for some high quality dry erase markers on amazon and ran across some erasable gel writers that I just had to try out, they have arrived and all I can say is that Pilot FriXion Pens are friggen amazing. They hold their state between 0F and 145F (give or take 10) at 145F the ink turns clear and at 0F it turns opaque. Not sure if Pilot maybe invented a whole knew way to commit fraud or not but erasing an entire drawing in 15 seconds with a blow dryer (and 2 seconds if held over the range top) and then un-erasing it by sticking it in the freezer for an hour is addicting.

Fighting this damn cold, everything started feeling better except my throat. Swallowing shards of glass it hurts so bad. Strep test was negative, but the doc gave me Vicodin because of how bad it looked. I hate being sick. :(

I had a sore throat last year that was so bad the doc gave me Lidocaine mixed with a couple of other things to gargle with, along with some antibiotics. GodDAMN that was miserable. I feel your pain.

One of my bosses at work felt dizzy and nauseous and went home a few weeks ago, assuming it was food poisoning, then she felt weak and woozy for days. Went to the doctor and turns out she'd had a medium-range heart attack, and that those are pretty standard female symptoms. They don't typically get the standard male numbness and chest pains.
The sex differences are based on the same old adrenaline/cortisol male/female divide. So I've been telling everybody I know.

Apparently rental agencies in HI will restrict the roads you can drive on, not sure if this is one of them but then again it's not actually a road. I will have comprehensive insurance through my credit card. The actual problem with getting stuck is that I'll be 60 miles from a tow truck and won't be able to get to my hotel room before check-in. Otherwise it's just money and irritation.

I think there was a thread about this somewhere, but eh. My son has maybe decided to get serious about programming. This is because of his burning need to create a Minecraft mod featuring lots of cats. Don't ask me, I don't know. Anyway, there is apparently a very good beginner type book on Java but it's a textbook and expensive; I'm not interested in buying something like that if he's going to drop it in a couple weeks. I know, Java. So today he goes to his first session of Robot Camp, which isn't a camp but rather an after-school thing, but whatever. My wife told me they were going to use Mindstorms, which I'd like to do if I didn't have a job. Anyway, he gets back and says they suggest using Scratch to learn. I don't know where this was when I last looked, but the screenshots sold me. I might report back on his progress if anyone is interested. Or not. Whatever. http://scratch.mit.edu/

Interesting.
I'll see how it goes with Scratch, since that's recommended and perhaps used by his robotics lessons. I don't want to muddy the water but I might show that to him later.
I knew he was serious when he asked about variable types, so I ended up showing him how to count in binary and what a eight-bit integer is. The next day he brings home a sheet of paper where he has written out all the numbers up to 36... close enough! I gave him some corrections but I was really impressed that he was doing that instead of drawing Minecraft pictures.

I had one of those (I can't take coedine -- have side effects) for a bad sore throat. Using it was kinda of a pain, unless they somehow gave me an extra syrupy mixture. I found for an insanely bad sore throat (I generally get it from massive sinus problems) hot tea and lots of honey helps a surprising amount.

I really can't say enough good stuff about Code Academy. Because I got started so late in life at coding, a lot of it really feels like an uphill battle. I would take a class, understand maybe 60% of what I was doing but still manage to get an A or B. In between classes, though, I'd use Code Academy to fill in the blanks. That's when stuff really started to make sense. Once he's done with Scratch, I strongly recommend the JS/Jquery/Python tutorials.

Has he played with the minecraft mods? Computercraft? It's LUA but it's still a great, hands-on way to learn to program. Tell him to make a disco or something with flashing lights, code lights that come on when you walk in the room, or a giant statue that lights up at night. What about an automated factory that churns out cookies, all controlled through wires? It's full-SMP through tekkit.

Oh python. I'm not really sure about that. I'll look for Computercraft, but later. I need to strike while the iron is hot with this real-programming thing. Thanks to Kodu and now Scratch, he has a decent grip on conditionals such as if and while. I'll show him Code Academy this weekend, I think. Right now we are both relaxing after a hard week.

Python was the first language they gave us in COMP101. How old is he again? It doesn't matter; if I can learn Python, your kid can learn core concepts with it, too. Kodu is pretty awesome but my daughter never really took to it.
Interestingly, my kid just told me that she wants to be an engineer... in robotics. She's almost 8, and when she said that my heart went all aflutter. For next year's science fair she wants to do a robot that can walk. I'm hoping there's some awesome lego sets that might help us.

Apparently Mindstorms is what you want.
My kid is nine and not terribly interested in anything. Until now, that is.
I'm going to consider python since I will need to learn it anyway. The whitespace makes me pull my hair, though.

I dropped my son in to creative mode on our server and he's been enjoying the hell out of making huge stacks of dynamite that are then set-off. I think he's blown a number of holes into 'nothingspace' at this point.

Why is the concept of accruing an invoice so difficult to understand for some project managers? I mean, if I say that you have no invoice actuals in January, invoice actual in February (for January's work), invoice actual in March (for February's work) and an invoice accrual in March (for March's work), the PM gives me blank looks. And then asks how she should record the accrual in her plan. And gets confused again when I tell her to include it as an actual in March (aka March has 2 invoice actuals instead of one), so that all her Q1 invoices show as actuals in Q1. Is this concept really that hard to understand?
