Colostomy, I don't even remember

Sorry bro.  How long do they think until they can try a pull through?  Colostomies are no fun.

Aren't you a dentist? What is there to lie about, flossing habits?

Not trying to condescend at all, just don't know what you would lie to a dentist about.

More specifically I'm an orthodontist.  Teenagers lie about breaking their appliances, how much they brush, how much they wear their rubber bands, why they weren't wearing their retainers.......and so on.  I've heard every excuse and I know when they're lying.  They won't look me in the eye and start fidgeting.  But yes, people lie to the regular dentist about flossing or brushing or what have you.  There's a lot of weird psychology that goes with dentistry, and lots of folks are very embarrassed about their teeth.

I wish my hygienist would stop trying to guilt me about flossing. Yes, I know I need to floss more, most people do.

However, when you get done cleaning and compliment me on how clean things are, there's not plaque or cavities...give me some goddamned credit. I didn't see a dentist for twenty years and had one goddamned cavity, I think I've got the whole oral hygiene thing down.

I should ask her when the last time she updated her antivirus or ran backups.

You absolutely should guilt your dentist about this.  But then again they absolutely should guilt you about flossing.  It's their job.  If they paid you to come in and evaluate their computer security and backups you would be remiss to not tell them about every problem, right?

You need to have the "why must you turn my office into a house of lies" clip from the Simpsons handy.

If I were to be honest with hygienists about flossing I wouldn't stop at telling them how little I do it.  I would also explain that it is a tedious unpleasant activity which I have to waste precious willpower on at my weakest moments either first thing in the morning or last thing at night.  The one minute every day would translate into six hours every year.  Six hours of that crap isn't worth bleeding a little less during the cleaning or making her job a bit easier.  Worse case scenario I would rather get a cavity and go through an hour of having it filled than flossing religiously.  Flossing is only something you should do if you can't/don't get regular cleanings.

Instead of going on such an insane rant that would no doubt make them feel bad I stick with the approved white lie scenario:

Hygienist: So are you still flossing two to three times a week?
Me: Yes more or less.
Hygienist: You should try to do it more often *gives some feeble advice to make it more palatable*.
Me: Yeah I'll try to do that.

Edit: And as to the IT analogy I'm not paying them for advice on what I should be doing, I'm paying them to maintain and fix what I've broken.  The only equivalent I can think of as annoying as flossing would be enacting a policy where you had to use a different password every day, that was at least 12 charaters long, contain no dictionary words, use numbers, mixed case, can't use old passwords and had punctuation.  You get locked out after three unsuccessful attempts...

I wish that was what she'd ask me, I wouldn't have to lie. I do actually floss regularly, so much gross crap builds up it's disturbing that others do not. No, my hygienist insists on asking if I'm flossing every day. The last time she said she flosses with one of those little harp doohickeys WHILE DRIVING. She's nuts.

BUT she's the best hygienist ever, does a great job and very gentle, so I don't tell her she's nuts.

The company I work for, now that it's (finally) installed.  Required for ISO certification to "remote-wipe" the offending devices the next time someone loses one.

Are you running Exchange? As long as you enforce a PIN on everyone you can do remote wipes on phones running ActiveSync which would open up iPhones and the like to everyone. (We still have a BES server ourselves.)

If ActiveSync is less painful than trying to install (let alone manage) BESX, and the ISO auditor will accept it (he demanded BES), I will definitely look into it...

From what I gather, sticking a hot poker through your genitalia is less painful than doing anything with the whole "install stuff to allow users to check Exchange email on a Blackberry without going through RIM" nonsense.

uninstall/reinstall  IIRC all the settings stick, of course if I am wrong then yer in deep shit.  I also remember the support contract from RIM was $500/year and worth it.

Well, another boring visit to the dentist completed successfully.  I have this theory that my dentist dreams about someday finding something wrong with my teeth so he can actually do something more involved than replacing some silver fillings I got when I was 12.

We're running BES 5 for about 150 users and other than restarting the BES services once week and the brutal web UI, it's been... ok. The RIM service agreement is WELL worth it and every time I've had to deal with them, they basically rebuild our setup in a virtual lab and have been actually quite helpful and prompt.

YMMV.

You'll likely get the task of putting Astrasync on the Crackberries and pointing them at the Exchange server at this point.  wink

After picking the Xerox network analyst's brain for five minutes jotting down notes of how he thought I could fix a few problems (and after spending the morning learning the menus), the one piece of info that tipped me off: "It's kind of hidden" He didn't know where, but I knew to stop looking in any logical place and just went over everything and found a hidden menu. Yay.

Off to the US for two and a half weeks tomorrow. Not really looking forward to it, will have a ton of stuff to catch up on when I get back and I don't really like the US very much. We can't even afford it really but the wife insists and it would trigger a huge argument if I flatly refused to go.

I also hate having to rely on people with a car to go anywhere as Colorado Springs has almost no public transport or even affordable taxis.

You can take FREX up to downtown Denver, but it's not exactly a quick jaunt. Once in Denver you wouldn't need a car (for the 20x10 blocks of downtown anyways).

Oh yay!  Katia is "supposed" to make it to the East Coast sometime next weekend, right about the time I'll be in NC visiting the in-laws.  The ones who live about a mile inshore from the intercoastal waterway.
