VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - A Canadian man's apparent fondness for the video game "Grand Theft Auto" has led to his arrest in connection with an auto theft, police said on Wednesday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Shylo Kujawski -- who has "Grand Theft Auto" prominently tattooed on his back -- was spotted acting suspiciously in a Vancouver suburb where several stolen cars had been reported.

Using the tattoo to identify Kujawski as a convicted auto thief, police said they then set up a stakeout that nabbed him attempting drive away in a stolen car.

Police said during the stakeout they also watched Kujawski thwart his own attempt to drive away in another stolen vehicle by accidentally disabling the car with the owner's steering wheel lock.

Kujawski, of no fixed address, has been charged with possession of stolen property in connection with an auto theft, as well as breach of probation and driving while suspended.

Requisite addendum to all Vancouver car thief stories:

"The man was fully expected to face the most stringent penalty Canadian law allows - a stern talking to and a 3 month suspension of his drivers license. Since obviously its impossible to steal cars without a drivers license."

No, I'm not bitter about car theft or anything.

A couple years ago I lived at the number one car theft location in North America. 100th ave and 140th st, Surrey, BC.  Yay me.

I've been lucky - only six breakins and one complete theft (got the car back) living here.

Yeah, it's kind of sad because the penalty is actually pretty close to what happens in the game.  You spawn outside of the police station without your weapons.

He should start dating a police officer, then he can spawn outside the station with his weapons.

Why am I homeless?  Why do all you motherfuckers need homes is the real question.

I'm still in shock that there is actual crime in Canada... well, crime not associated with Hockey... or curling.

They should smoke more BC bud. I'm pretty sure if they did they'd be less capable of stealing cars.

Vancouver attracts lots of interesting people since it is about the only city in Canada where you won't freeze to death in the winter if you are homeless or a junkie.  This combined with the fact they try very hard to be the Canadian equivalent of hip and cool Seattle creates some interesting social patterns.

Like Bunk said, BC hosts the #1 location for car theft in the world.

During my trip there I met a variety of people. Angry people. I left my girlfriend cause I just wouldn't move into that kind of shit. Plus, the rent is crazy expensive.

Been to Vancouver once.

I will never, ever go back again.

(Edit: Not only that, but it was only for a day, unless you consider North Vancouver to be the same area, which I very much don't)

Meh. I've lived in Van most of my life. It takes a certain p.o.v but it's a metric shit-ton better than most places in North America, once you get past the crime. And the drugs. Oh yeah, and the crazy real estate prices. Other than that it's paradise!  tongue

EDIT: Oh and on car theft - my 2 year old RX-8 has been broken into 7 times. In a locked underground garage. Last time the morons broke the driver side window despite the fact the car was unlocked. Paradise. Pure and simple. (well, the pot is good and the women are hot...that amounts to something.)
