Looking forward too it, hopefully the doublebarrel will make a comeback. And hell, we all know the engine will probably kick major ass like most every other engine ever made by ID.

I'll be buying it. I'll be buying a new video card as well (finally).

I'll be curious how they spin (or if they even bother) out that sad tale of UAC's epic screwups.

There was something...special...about the original DOOM. Not sure exactly what, but it just had a certain atmosphere that really appealed to me. I wonder if id can recapture that.

I also especially liked a few of the original Doom tunes; thought they were better than the Doom 2 ones.

If I thought my machine had a prayer of running it, I might be interested.  I lack the will to lay down more cash than my xbox cost me for a new video card.

So buy it for the Xbox? Hell, you'll even get Co-op.

The screenshot comparisons of xbox to pc are pretty sad looking for the xbox, but I am sure the pc ones are at max detail as well though.

PC Gamer already had an article leaked that I read where they gave it like a 96% or 97%, I forget.  The only bad comment through the whole thing was that they thought the attempts at humor throughout the game fell flat.

They reported taking 22 hours to complete it on medium difficulty, so it seems like either the game is pretty long or the reviewer really sucks.  They went on and on about how great it looked, how atmospheric it was, how scary it was, blah blah.  I don't trust magazine reviews though.  All I can get out of that is that it probably does not suck ass.

They have released 3 system specs for performance and this is from memory so don't sue me.

Low
GeForce 4MX and up card (yes, that is right)
512 ram
I forget processor

Medium
GeForce FX5950 level card
1024 ram
I forget processor

High
GeForce 6900
2 GIG of ram (sheesh, I can't believe it really uses it though)
I forget processor

This was info I got from another message board, but supposedly it was from iD.  The review stated that there was an ultra high texture resolution that could not be run on modern computers.  I question that.  Why ship all that space?  Are people REALLY going to pull this game out again 1-2 years down the road?  That bit was from PC gamer, so huge grain of salt.

No way I am buying a game like this without seeing how it runs first on my 2.5ghz barton with overclocked 5900XT.  So since there is no demo planned, it looks like it is time to download the game and see how it works prior to purchase.  If it plays well I will buy it most likely.  I need something to hold me over till hl2.

Heh, i had Wing Commander working on my 486.

Anyhow, if the powers up above deem me worthy, i will probably be writing a review for it (being the greasy little fanboi that i am) as soon as it arrives down under.

It's been awhile but I think Tribes 2 released under similar circumstances.  Awesome graphics engine that no one could take full advantage of.

Is it true that this game only supports 4 player multiplayer?  Or is this an Xbox Live thing?

Also, I guess I'll end up getting this game on my Xbox instead of PC since I see no point in sinking a lot of money into my PC just to see medium performance levels.  The Radeon 9500 Pro MIGHT pass the medium requirements but I'd still have to drop ~$100-$150 on another 512 stick.

Upgrading for Doom is a classic. I remember having to run down to the shop and pick up another 4 mb ram for Doom II. Considering what computer parts cost now that's roughly a Radeon 9600/800 and a stick of 512 mb ram.

Yup, 4 player max multiplayer.  There will surely be mods to raise those caps though.  How much of it is technical limitations and how much is gameplay decision is unknown to me at this time.

Xbox has a coop mode for multiplayer that the PC will not have.  Look for a coop PC mod rather quickly though, because it will drive SOMEONE crazy knowing someone else has something they don't.

There are also reportedly only 5 or so multiplayer maps.  I have not heard anything solid on this yet, the leaked PC gamer article does not touch on multiplayer at all.  The shaky info I have heard is that iD went for quality over quantity.  The multiplayer is supposed to be rather stealth based with the abilities to shoot out lights to setup ambushes etc...

Yup, but nowadays I have quite a few gaming options as opposed to my options when the original Doom released.

For the record, I don't think anyone here said HL2 wouldn't bend their computer over and do nasty things to it.

I think expectations for HL2 are higher because of features like storyline and multiplayer that are largely absent from the Doom series.

.... what the hell are you talking about? Doom II was the first fps I ever saw/played tournaments in. As for story, well you're probably right.

Me I think everyone's drooling for HL2 because they're mouthbreathing CS players.

You do realize that Doom 3 multiplayer is limited to 4 people.  I don't honestly give a flying fuck about the past.  HL was the biggest online FPS force since Quake. HL2 is looking to carry on where HL left off.

Doom 3 doesn't look to be bringing anything new to the multiplayer experience.  Really, am I missing something here?

Edit: I honestly could give a shit about either. But when you look at both side by side, HL2 is the more ambitious project by far.

Or maybe because it doesn't look like it's art department was comprised of mentally challenged 13 year old heavy metal fans.

Flaming, screaming skulls? Check.
Upside down head-spiders (obviously ripped off from The Thing)?  Check.
Undead zombies in camouflage with big guns?  Check.
A plastic sheen to every fucking object in the game?  Check.

All this thing lacks is an Iron Maiden soundtrack and you'll have every mongoloid in the land drooling over it.  But yeah, the CS players are the idiots...

It's a gameplay/map decision, not a technical limitation.

Neither does HL2. HL2's multiplayer *is* Counter-Strike (well apparently it will have a co-op mode too).

I just denigrated the "look" and you think I'd be interested in where it came from?  I have a pretty good idea already; adolescent horror masturbatory fantasies sums it up fairly nicely.

Yeah, the knocking of Iron Maiden, especially including the band relation to "OMFGDOOM3", is going too far.

4 player deathmatch! Woot Goldeneye flashback! Odd that's the same number of controller ports on an xbox, not that console development has any impact on the pc world.

I can't think of anything that makes me the slightest bit inclined to buy Doom 3, so I guess I'll stop bashing it, no matter how easy and fun it is.

Uh, from what I read they benchmarked it on one machine with 4 gigs of RAM, and another with 2 gigs.  That's really nice and all, but it's not exactly useful information.  That doesn't even begin to cover the fact that the three video cards were all top of the line.
