Well, I've been waiting a long time for this game to get finished, and now that it's finally done, I'm too broke to buy it. I was actually trying to hold off on buying GalCiv2 for this one, especially after hearing that GalCiv2 didn't really bring anything new to the table, but I eventually succumbed. Anyways, if anyone has given SotS a go, let me know if it's worth selling my soul for it. Edit: Looks like I missed the demo. Here's the link: http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/sots

I played the demo, but was kinda 'neh' on it. I expected something hella awesome from the old Homeworld crew, but the demo seemed to fall on an uncomfortable spot between simple, quick games and complex, deep games. Too many fiddly details to just whip out a game in an hour, but not enough details to put a whole evening into.

This game has exactly the same game mechanics that Spaceward Ho! had. That came out in ~1990. The graphics are 'improved' but the original interface and such was much much better in the older game.

I should get back to nature, too. You know, like going to a shop for groceries instead of the computer. Maybe a condo in the woods that doesn't even have a health club or restaurant attached. Buy a car with only two cup holders or something. -Signe

I've played around with the demo enough to get an idea. It seems like it's centered mostly around the combat - 3D RTS minus the resource management and a pause button. It seemed like it had potential, but I didn't get too deep. One thing that just didn't live up to my expectation is the ship design. I've been known to crack out on GalCiv2's ship designer, so just giving me the bare essentials really took some of the fun out of it. I guess this ties into the fact that the developers seem to really hate micromanagement(not necessarily a bad thing). The research trees are randomized to prevent you from having access to all the weapons and all the other goodies. Seems like a good idea to keep people from doing the turtle thing and just biding time until they get the few kick ass techs. The tutorial said that you always get the essential techs needed to build your space empire, but again, I didn't get too deep into the demo to really tell. I'm really having a hard time justifying the 40 bucks for it. By the time I finished playing the demo, I really found myself agreeing with Kitsune - just a little too much for a quick game, not enough for an epic one. I'm eventually going to give multiplayer and combat the time they deserve, maybe they'll change my opinion. no bad pig man no bad I was so creeped out by the pigman that I had to steal him from the front page. Thanks Ad Council!
